NHL '09/'10 Season Thread

I hope they go back to American teams versus Canadian teams in the NHL all star game. :D

And as for America's hockey program, like I said, we have like four states where the game is actually a hot bed. The Dakotas will produce a pro every once in a while, as will Wisconsin and some of the small states in the north east, but considering Michigan and Minnesota are the bulk of players that represent us consitently, it's pretty telling about how good these athletes are in these states. So more than anything, we probably have a pool of less than 30 million to pick from unlike Canada- probably more like 10-15 million. Also, there are starting to be more players on USA teams from southern states, west coast states, and even places like New Jersey and New York. I'd watch out for US hockey for the foreseable future.

One of the things they mentioned at the World Juniors is that there are kids on the team from places like Las Vegas. It's rare that they have teams there, but the game is slowly growing through the states.

I think there was a kid on that team from Oklahoma and Texas as well. Crazy. I've had ice across my street outside all winter, but these places it just isn't feasible to get a game. The buds and I can walk across the street with a 12 pack and play all night if we want outside. I also know the director so from time to time he will leave all the lights on not just a few like they always do. Nothing better than outside hockey under the lights with a case of beer. :glugglug:

Well, I don't know why street hockey isn't more popular in the Southern states. I guess it may have to do with the fact you need sticks and (I suppose) goalie pads if you want to play a game, compared to just a football or soccer ball, but still. It's fun.

We should get a FreeOnes road hockey game going.

See? He has the right idea. Even though he's Canadian.

You know, I agreed with everything you said except for that. That's not true at all. The win against the Soviet Union could be considered a fluke, but that wasn't the gold medal game. They still had to beat Finland to win the gold. Winning one game might be a fluke, but winning two isn't. They earned those medals, just like Canada did at these Olympics. It wasn't a fluke.

Biggest fluke in hockey history. Feel free to disagree, I have no problem with that, but I think most knowledgeable hockey fans would agree with me. Even though I feel like it was a fluke, I still believe it's one of the greatest accomplishments in hockey history as well. You're right in saying that the fluke was in beating the Soviets and not in beating Finland for the gold, but if they hadn't beaten the Soviets then they never would have played for gold in the first place.

Here are some statistics for you to argue over:

Number of registered players by country

Canada 499,695
United States 465,975
Czech Republic 97,102
Russia 84,720
Germany 68,800
Finland 61,684
Sweden 60,374
Switzerland 24,705
Slovakia 8,671

And your source? How a "hockey player" is brought up in one country could be something totally different than another, and even in the states a player in Minnesota grows up in hockey culture and a system that breeds tallent unlike other places.

Nothing to argue about here. But over 50% of the players in the NHL are Canadian.

You guys are anal about your....your sport. I don't blame you. I will say that, Minnesota alone could have come close to fielding a team for the olympics if we really looked hard enough. And America was one of the best teams in the tournament, and we had/have the best goalie on the planet right now.

I think you should just accept that America is a force on the international scene and will always be from now on.

I'm just really glad to see the US doing so well lately. I shows a lot about how hockey has turned around for Americans over the past 30 years. Yes Canada your beastly at hockey but we can still hang. Maybe soon enough we'll be able to hang with you in curling as well. Haha.

P.S. rodfarva is a dick....Trying to say that I was being disrespectful. Yeah, and what is all that childish taunting at the end of your post called?

I have accepted and said that America is a force in the international scene. I said that they can beat Canada. My point is (and I said this too) that Canada will always be the team to beat. Try reading my posts more carefully. I've clearly accepted that the US is good enough to play with Canada, you should be able to surmise that from what I've actually said.

You were being disrespectful. You know you were too.

Hey Canada....if you love it so much why don't you start your own league that matches the NHL so we don't have to do everything for you!

hey...we're pretty much on par now with Canada and have almost matched you in the only sport that matters to the country. At least we have other sports that we pride aside from hockey. Thats Canadas only sport they supposedly are amazing at and they can barely beat the "inferior" team.

Blatant disrespect.

P.S. Not trying to childishly taunt anybody, trying to get through to you that the US did not prove that they are on par with Canada in hockey with their performance at the Olympics. I agree they can hang with Canada and make a killer game out of it like they did in the gold medal game, but they will never be able to catch up with our endless production of legendary players, year after year after year we produce more and more and more. The US can produce a lot of talent year to year, and they have done so for the past 30 years or so, but not at the same level as Canada. I'm sorry you felt I was childishly taunting you, I felt offended by your disrespectful comments toward Canada. Perhaps I shouldn't have sunk to that level. I'm sorry.

I was thinking, is this the number of registered hockey players within a country or from a country? I'd like to know the source as well, if you don't mind. Just for curiosity's sake.
