The Second-Hottest Man in my Mother's Basement
I agree with everything you're saying here. If Bryzgalov had played from the beginning it might not have been such a dominant performance and Bykov was crazy not to go with Brygalov to start the second. I do not agree that it was more of a Russian failure though. Canada played an exceptional game and nothing was going to stop them from winning it. Russia didn't fail. We shut down Ovechkin, something you thought was impossible. Our defence stepped up huge and made four of the big five forwards for Russia look invisible. Semin was the only one who played well out of those five. Maxim Afinogenov also played really well.

You're right, Canada did play an exceptional game, but Russia failed because it was obvious they didn't. The first period took all the wind out of their sails. Nabokov just didn't come with his game face on, and he will probably be focused upon as the man who lost Russia a medal. I'm somewhat biased in favour of Bryzgalov, given I am a fan of Phoenix, but if he was in net from the beginning, this would have been a 3-4 game. It wouldn't have lived up to the expectations, but it would have at least been competitive.

It also appears like the Crosby/Ovechkin rivalry will have to be decided some other time. Neither got a point in this game, and so to all you Crosby fans: this does not count. Just cause Canada eliminated Russia doesn't mean Crosby is a better player; it just means Canada is better than Russia.

Back to NHL hockey. Will teammates get along with their Olympic rivals? Perry, Getzlaf and Ryan? Kesler and Luongo? Toews, Keith and Kane?

Kesler talked a lot of shit about Canada. I wonder how the fans will take to that???

Does anyone here think Patrick Kane will ever amass numbers like he did when he was a junior?:

2003-2004 Detroit Honeybaked-MWEHL GP 70 G 83 A 77 PTs 160
2006-2007 London Knights-OHL GP 58 G 62 A 83 PTs 145

http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8474141

He has never put these kind of numbers up in the NHL, but I was wondering if you guys think he can?

Nope. Kyle Wellwood and Jason Spezza put up monster numbers too. Small players like Wellwood and Kane can excel against inferior competition in the OHL. Now they're going up against all world defenceman and goalies. He does have a sweet shot though. Maybe the sweetest? New poll? Nah. Too lazy. Those London Knights are pumping out some studs though.

Gold medal game did a huge rating number in the U.S. Naturally, the talk became "can the NHL capture this momentum"....

Well, no. Not until ESPN gets off its fat, lazy ass and takes back the broadcasting rights in the U.S. for the sport.....

Fucking Versus is a joke.

The Atlanta Thrashers acquired forward Evgeny Artyukhin from the Anaheim Ducks on Monday night in exchange for defenseman Nathan Oystrick and a conditional draft choice in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

goddammit...

Those are impressive numbers though. Remember, Gretzky was always a small guy. I would like to see Kane put up 60+ goals in a season some year. That would be cool.

On the Directv where I am they are not covering Versus because they have some tax on Directv so Directv is boycotting them or something. Pretty shitty. They do give us the NHL channel though and there are games on there I can watch.

I'm glad Kesler talked a lot of shit about Canada..that's awesome to hear from my Ohio State boy. I always love some good trash talking...going to the CBJ vs Vancouver game tomorrow. Bout to boo the shit outta Luongo....possibly even Nash lol.

I Love it when the players talk trash about opposing teams and players and cities. It makes things interesting and shows you the player really does have care a lot about what they do.

Trash talk is good, but when you play in Canada, in front of hardcore Canuck fans, with your Canadian gold medal winning team mate Luongo, you have to wonder if people will be so accepting of him.

Pretty stupid to talk smack the way he did. Next time keep quiet, win, and then talk smack. Looks like a fool in hindsight. Go ahead and boo the gold medallists. Shows a total lack of respect for greatness to do so. They won the gold. Booing them for winning? You should boo Kesler for losing.

He didn't fucking lose...they beat Canada in the first game, with some authority. That's gotta say something for team USA. Canada just happened to be the better team on the right night...which ended up being the gold medal game. In my mind it was pretty even between the two teams with Canada only coming up with the gold because they happened to play a little bit better on the bigger stage, and they did have their home ice and everyone in the whole damn country backing them up. I think the US players, including my boy Kesler, showed a lot of heart and guts to go up there and hanging with the "power house" Canadians. USA came away with silver, and could've maybe gotten gold had things gone their way a little more; I think it shows a lot about how US hockey has come along and how they're not gonna take shit from Canada anymore. Looking down on Americans as inferior in the sport they prize most. Hey Canada....if you love it so much why don't you start your own league that matches the NHL so we don't have to do everything for you! I wasn't trying to be disrespectful to Canada or the Canadian team when I said I was glad to hear that Kesler was trash talking. Trash talking is meant for sports, especially when bragging rights for the whole country are at stake, so I was glad to hear that Kesler was sticking up for his country and giving back what I know the Canadians have done for a very long time. So hey...we're pretty much on par now with Canada and have almost matched you in the only sport that matters to the country. At least we have other sports that we pride aside from hockey. Thats Canadas only sport they supposedly are amazing at and they can barely beat the "inferior" team. Well sorry for the rambling but anyways I'm proud of Kesler...I'm proud of team USA. I'm not going to boo the gold medalists and won't show a lack of respect for their "greatness", Rick Nash is my boy too, I was just doing some trash talking. Congratulations Team Canada on the gold medal...well done boys. Great job Team USA on one hell of a tournament and the silver medal and thank you world for having such an awesome tournament of players!! See you in 2014 in Sochi motherfuckers!! Haha

I don't want to be rude. You say some things I totally agree with here. But I have to start off by saying: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! You're saying that the US beat Canada "with authority" in the first game? Did you even watch the game? The US won 5-3, with the fifth goal being an empty-netter, so they basically won 4-3. Canada outshot the US 45-23 in that game. LET ME REPEAT: CANADA OUTSHOT THE US 45-23 IN THAT GAME. We actually outplayed YOU with authority. You won that game purely on goaltending. Brodeur was horrendous and Miller was exceptional. That's all that game came down to. Canada was the better team on that night too.

As for the gold medal game, you're right, it was a hell of a game. Very even. Canada only outshot the US 39-36 and had to play overtime to win it. In overtime, though, Canada dominated puck possession and that was the difference.

The US hasn't matched Canada in hockey and they never will. The last gold they won was 1980 and it was a fluke. You're trying to bash Canadians for not dominating the US in the "only sport we care about." If we're going to bash anybody, why don't we bash the US for not dominating Canada in every sport regardless of how much we care about it. You have roughly ten times the amount of people we do and put 32487234093725987234 times more funding into your athletic programs. You should destroy us always. Look at all of your best players and compare them to all of ours. You're not as good. Accept it, it's true.

That doesn't mean that the US can't beat us and I'm not saying the US isn't damn good at hockey because they are. I thought they were the best team in the tournament except when they played us. They have an excellent hockey program and they will continue to improve, but Canada will always continue to produce legendary players over and over and over.

As for Canada creating our own league to match the NHL so you can "stop doing it for us," get real! Who's doing what for whom? We're providing the majority of the players (over 50% of the NHL players are Canadian) and a significant number of star players. How about we take away all the Canadian players from the NHL and see how long it lasts? How about Canadian fans stop watching the NHL? The NHL exists because of Canadians. We keep it going.

Thank you for retracting your statement that you would boo Luongo and Nash. I don't think you should boo Kesler either. His silver medal is a great achievement and he and the US should be proud of it.

Try showing a little more respect to Canada. We have the most gold medals in Olympic ice hockey history (8 to the US's 2), we have won two golds since the last time the US won gold (2002 and 2010, the US's last in 1980), we have the deepest group of star players in the world, and we just won gold. Don't try to belittle it by saying that we "barely beat the US," and don't fool yourself into believing that because you took us to overtime and beat us in a qualifying round game that you've caught up to us. We still outplayed you and we still won. Get it, we won, you lost, gold to Canada, silver to the US. Do you get it? Win a gold in Russia and then say that, maybe, you're on your way to catching up. Until then, Canada rules the hockey world, again.

You know, I agreed with everything you said except for that. That's not true at all. The win against the Soviet Union could be considered a fluke, but that wasn't the gold medal game. They still had to beat Finland to win the gold. Winning one game might be a fluke, but winning two isn't. They earned those medals, just like Canada did at these Olympics. It wasn't a fluke.

I hope they go back to American teams versus Canadian teams in the NHL all star game. :D

And as for America's hockey program, like I said, we have like four states where the game is actually a hot bed. The Dakotas will produce a pro every once in a while, as will Wisconsin and some of the small states in the north east, but considering Michigan and Minnesota are the bulk of players that represent us consitently, it's pretty telling about how good these athletes are in these states. So more than anything, we probably have a pool of less than 30 million to pick from unlike Canada- probably more like 10-15 million. Also, there are starting to be more players on USA teams from southern states, west coast states, and even places like New Jersey and New York. I'd watch out for US hockey for the foreseable future.
