The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed free agent left wing Alex Tanguay to a one-year contract today, Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Lawton announced.
“We are extremely pleased to announce Alex’s signing today,” Lawton said. “He is a player we had targeted some time and I could not be happier about welcoming him to the Lightning organization. We fully recognized the need for another top six forward and in signing Alex we feel we could not have possibly done any better.”
Tanguay, 6-foot-1, 189 pounds, has played in 659 career NHL games with Colorado, Calgary and Montreal. During that time he has amassed 193 goals, 580 points, 50 power play goals and 28 game-winning goals including a career plus-157 rating. Tanguay has netted 15 goals or more in each of his nine NHL seasons with the exception of one (2001-02) and 20 or more in four of the previous six. He was named to the NHL All-Star Game in 2003-04 and led the NHL in shooting percentage with 23.2 percent in 2005-06. Tanguay also finished third for shooting percentage (20.6 percent) in 2006-07 and his plus-35 rating in 2000-01 ranked sixth. He was second among NHL rookies in scoring in 1999-00 with 51 points. He is only three seasons removed from recording a career-high 81 points and four seasons away from netting a career best 29 goals.
A native of Ste-Justine, Quebec, Tanguay has appeared in nearly 100 career Stanley Cup Playoff games (98), having never missed the postseason in his career. He has recorded 19 goals and 59 points during his career, winning the Stanley Cup with Colorado in 2000-01. In the Stanley Cup Finals that season, Tanguay scored two goals in Game 7 against New Jersey, including the game-winner.
Tanguay recorded 16 goals and 41 points in 50 games with the Canadiens last season despite having his season shortened due to injury. He was named Montreal’s Player of the Month in October after leading the team in goals with six and points with 11. He also led the team in points with 13 and rating with a plus-8 in March. Tanguay tied a career high with a five-point game (2-3-5) on March 24 against Atlanta.
The 29-year-old was originally drafted by the Avalanche in the first round, 12th overall, of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He was traded to Calgary by Colorado in exchange for Jordan Leopold, a second-round pick in 2006 and a second round pick in 2007 on June 24, 2006. Tanguay was traded to Montreal by Calgary with a fifth-round pick in 2008 in exchange for a first-round choice in 2008 and a second-round pick in 2009 on June 20, 2008.

I cant wait for the start of the new hockey season, preseason starts Sept. 16!!! I am a Dallas Stars fan and I think with Brendan Morrow and Brad Richards returning the Stars will be back in the playoff fight in the tough Western Conference, I just hope our young defensive players can step up and play solid on the blue line and help out Turco.

Danny Heatley has been traded to the San Jose Sharks for Milan Michalek and Jonathan Cheechoo. So finally the saga is over , the whinny heatley gets his wish and the ottawa senators are rid a of guy they really didnt want at their training camp.
