Tampa has traded Radim Vrbata back to the phoenix Coyotes for Todd Fedoruk and David Hale.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=285277

I think it's a good trade since Vrbata wasn't in the plans anymore for the Lightning and it opens up the possibility of Tampa signing Alex Tanguay to play with Vincent Lecavalier and Vaclav Prospal. It would be one hell of a good line.

interesting. we'll see how this plays out, but i've heard Tanguay still wants too much money...

I wouldn't mind if they signed Maxim Afinogenov , but I think Lawton wants players that give 100 % each and every game and he's not that kind of player. As for Tanguay , let's hope he accepts a contract like the one they gave to Ohlund , more years for a little less money.

I went to check my roster for this upcoming fantasy season- and realized Michael Camalleri was TRADED to Montreal. Why? What are the Flames thinking? The guy is down right money.

Lightning, defenseman Matt Smaby avoid arbitration with two-year deal

The Lightning and defenseman Matt Smaby had an arbitration hearing set for Tuesday, but after Smaby signed late Saturday night, it is not needed. Smaby signed a two-year, $1.05 million deal that will pay $500,000 next season and $550,000 in 2010-11.

Tampa Bay's qualifying offer to Smaby, a restricted free agent, was $660,000 if he played in the NHL, $65,000 if he played in the minors. Smaby, who played several months last season with a broken right foot, wanted a one-way deal that paid him the same no matter where he played.

Here is the announcement from the team:

The Tampa Bay Lightning avoided arbitration with defenseman Matt Smaby today, signing him to a two-year contract, Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Lawton announced.

"We are pleased to announce this agreement with Matt today," said Lawton upon making the announcement. "He is big, physical and really skates well for a man that stands 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds. He played well for us last season and I expect his personal development to continue in 2009-10."

Smaby, 6-foot-5, 240 pounds, has played in 57 career NHL games, all with Tampa Bay. He has recorded four assists and averaged 17:22 in ice time during his career. Smaby made his NHL debut last season after being recalled on March 17, 2008. He has played in 149 AHL games with the Norfolk Admirals and Springfield Falcons, recording five goals and 28 points with 139 penalty minutes.

A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Smaby played in a career-high 43 games with the Lightning last season, recording a career-best four assists and 50 penalty minutes. His 19:05 average ice time was also the highest of his career and was fourth among NHL rookie defensemen with 20 or more games played. Smaby ranked fourth on the Lightning in hits with 122 and blocked hots with 68. He was recalled to Tampa Bay on December 27 and finished the season with the Lightning despite suffering a broken bone in his foot. Smaby recorded his first NHL point with an assist December 27 against Florida.

The 24-year-old Minneapolis, Minnesota native captained the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux team that reached the NCAA Frozen Four in consecutive seasons (2004-05, 2005-06). As a junior, Smaby skated in 45 games with the Sioux in 2005-06, scoring four goals and dishing out 15 assists. He was tied for third on the team in plus/minus rating with a plus-20 rating. Smaby was also one of three Sioux to be named to the All-WCHA Third Team.

Smaby was drafted by Tampa Bay in the second round, 41st overall, of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

TAMPA - The Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday informed left wing Vinny Prospal that the team is buying out the remaining three years of his contract.

Tampa Bay general manager Brian Lawton sent a letter of intent to Prospal and his agent informing them of the decision. Prospal has 24 hours to decide whether to accept the buyout or request to be placed on waivers.

Prospal, who was reacquired from the Philadelphia Flyers before last season, signed a four-year contract worth $14 million last June. He has $10.5 million remaining on his deal.

Under the terms of the buyout, Prospal would receive two-thirds the remaining value of the contract spread out over twice the length of the remaining contract, which equates to $7 million over six years. By buying out the contract, the Lightning will take a salary cap hit of $1.167 for the next six seasons.

"After fully evaluating our roster and our position in the salary cap world, we arrived at the decision to buy out Vaclav Prospal from his contract,'' Lawton said. "We appreciate Vinny's service to the Lightning, but in the best interest of the team, we believe a difficult decision needed to be made in this case, and we are going to move ahead without him. We wish Vinny all the best.''

After enjoying a career season in 2007-08 by scoring 33 goals between Tampa Bay and Philadelphia to go with 71 points, Prospal had 19 goals and 45 points last season.

that's a bummer. i like Prospal. hopefully we'll try to get something good with the money we save from his deal

I'm really sad to see him go , Prospal was a favorite of mine on the team even though he didn't always deliver each year ( like last season with his 45pts ). Now I hope that move means they are close to signing Alex Tanguay for at least 2 or 3 years. Lawton has been saying lately that the Lightning needed another top 6 forward but they just let one go so now Tampa needs 2 top 6 forwards. Maybe they can find one within the organisation like Steve Downie but they really need to sign at least one offensive threat. Well all that is left to say is so long Vinny Prospal , thanks for the memories ! ( Now I need to make another signature :) )

yeah, i wish we'd quit doing that to the guy. sign him, release him. sign him again, release him again. sign him a 3rd time, release him a 3rd time. it ain't right.

I hope to god Lawton doesn't screw up the good things he has done since the start of summer. If he doesn't add a new top six forward , I will consider the Prospal Buyout a crap move. So I can't wait to see where this is going. Some rumors say that if Tampa doesn't get Alex Tanguay , Petr Sykora might be their backup plan. I'm not sure I want him on the team but if that's the only option left then maybe it wouldn't be so bad. Still I feel like they are close to getting Tanguay and that's why they have been freeing some cap space lately.

the rumors i've heard are that Tanguay is close to a deal with Phoenix :dunno:

It's a rumor by Eklund and it makes absolutely no sense ... Why would a team in dire financial problems like the Phoenix Coyotes go after a guy that is likely going to get at least 4.5 millions a year ? They didn't do anything during the summer except acquire Vrabata from Tampa so I really don't see it happen. I'm not sure Tanguay is going to sign with the Lightning but it makes way more sense for him to do so. I guess we will have to wait and see.

i could forgive all of the new owners' past mistakes if they could land both Tanguay and Sykora, but i know that's just a pipe dream :)

Tanguay would be a start and I'm confident that Steve Downie could be a good fit on one of the top 2 lines.

Malone-Stamkos-ST.Louis

Downie-Lecavalier-Tanguay

Could be nice.

hopefully they saw something good in the young guns camp and we'll see a couple of our prospects make the team. (wouldn't surprise me if Tyrell did)

the rumors i'm hearing say TB is close to a deal with Tanguay. unfortunately, there is still this matter:

Feuding Tampa Bay Lightning owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie may soon settle their differences with the help of NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.

According to a report in the St. Petersburg Times, Bettman has set up a process whereby the squabbling co-owners can buy each other out.

Barrie, according to the report, has the first shot in an exclusive 60-day window that reportedly runs out in September. Should Barrie fail, Koules would get his chance.

Along with the purchase price of the franchise, the Times reports that the winning parties must also handle the substantial debt obligations to former owner Palace Sports & Entertainment.

Should both sides fail to come to an agreement, the Times reports that the league may look for a buyer, or perhaps Palace Sports CEO Tom Wilson will take back control of the organization.

Koules and Barrie, as well as general manager Brian Lawton, met with Bettman in New York in mid-June, when the commissioner demanded the owners work out their differences. At the meeting, Bettman re-affirmed that Lawton is making hockey decisions for the franchise and for any transactions that would require ownership approval, he is obliged to get approval from both Koules and Barrie.

these guys need to shape the fuck up. their back stage antics will only hurt the Lightning. i hate to say it, but i predict another bad year(s)...

Unless they trade all the good players of the team , I don't see why this will make the team have a bad year. They have improved the Lightning greatly during the summer and even if they don't sign Tanguay , the team will be much better than last year , it's impossible to do worst than last year.
