I'd like to suggest reading 1984 and Farenheit 451 before watching the movies same for Lord of the Rings (although it's a bit long winded).

Citizen Kane - so you realize when it's finished that you just wasted two hours of your life discovering that the whole fuckin' point of the movie was that Kane had a shitty childhood. Rosebud was the name of his fuckin' sled, are you kidding me? And despite the endless plaudits that film students and connoisseurs heap upon it for its innovative techniques, it's the most overrated film in the history of cinema. And for that single, solitary reason, you should be forced to watch it!

Same goes for Catcher in the Rye, everyone should be forced to read it just to realise that from that point on their life can only get better.
Its basically Goodfellas part 2. Enjoyable but not Scorsese's best.
You've missed the point. What Rosebud is is not vitally important, its a narrative device, a way to explore the life of Kane.

No, I didn't miss the point of the film. I get that it's a narrative device - I had this pounded into my head during English 386 The Movies in college. All I'm saying is that this is the perfect film for a "Cliff Notes Theater". Here's all you need to know about the film:
Charles Foster Kane had a shitty childhood. And despite the mass of wealth he acquired during his lifetime and all the recognition he received as a newspaper magnate, in the end, he longed for the time lost during his youth. - There I just saved you two hours. That's the film in a nut shell. I could do the same with Titanic: the boat sinks, people die, it's very sad. There, saved you three hours.
