The music. I'm like Wagner: to me, a singer's voice is just another voice in the orchestra, another timbre added to the mix and doesn't need to make any sense to be pleasing or displeasing as long as the melodic lines it makes are good.

I couldn't have said it better... I brought myself up on Death Metal/Grindcore after all, can't really care about the lyrics if you're going to listen to something like that... Otherwise, much of the enjoyment is detracted.

I think love songs are the only songs where I actually listened to the lyrics, otherwise, they've been as the above stated to me. Even if I'm listening to something like Foghat, or Pennywise, I hardly ever pay attention to what they're singing about. It's about the music, man!

According to me combination of the three is important. Music, Lyrics and person or band is important for good song. If your lyrics is good but music is not so good than there is no more meaning of goos lyrics. Good music sounds good with nice lyrics.

A combination of all 3 and definitely without any contribution from Simon Cowell and his bland, mediocrity music machine.

My first instinct was the music, because the great composers did just that - they composed. Take JS Bach and be prepared to be floored.

But then I realized that lyrics can have a serious impact and, unfortunately, the character involved as well can bring another element. So I chose combination of the three.

I would honestly say talent.

Any band can have a singer, a number of people playing instruments, the ability to string words together to form lyrics, and the capacity to put it all together, but what really is most important is that they're able to use all these effectively.

Just for an example, let's take a look at Pearl Jam, one of my favorite bands. We have Eddie Vedder, somehow who is able to compose mystifying lyrics and wow the audience with his guttural, throaty voice. Jeff Ament, Matt Cameron, Stone Gossard, and Mike McCready, all exceptionally talented musicians, have the remarkable abilities to really make the most of their instruments and almost "speak" through them.

Now, take like (just off the top of my head) Plain White T's, a fairly young group who (in my opinion) isn't worth the attention they receive. Their lyrics are simplistic, their singer seems to exude little to no emotion during their songs, the melodies and hooks that they provide with their instruments lack any real thought or layering and seem to consist of providing as much sound as somebody pretending to play those instruments could also do.

Now, this is all just my opinion, so take what I say with a grain of salt. And to any Plain White T's fans that I may have offended, I deeply apologize for unsettling anyone who thought the group quite good

Why save the world, when you can rule it?
The music. And I hate how these days it's more about how the singer looks than the music; if you want porn, buy porn, if you want music, buy music!
It degrades music to buy music just cos the singer is hot. It degrades us all in fact.

Music is the most important, you need to lay down some sick grooves and chops before you can even think about lyrics.

Music. I'd like to say the lyrics, but as long as it's danceable I'm good to go.

What pisses me off is when people refuse to listen to something cuz who made it. If you told them the artist was someone they liked, they'd all of a sudden like it.
