It's all about the music m'aaaan.........
The rythm, or beat, or melody as some call it are the most important.
Lyrics too, but the lyrics good be incredible, if the music sucks then its all bad.

Good music will compensate for bad lyrics more often than good lyrics will compensate for bad music. And I couldn't give a shit about who's performing it... I have zero band loyalty.

It's a combination, but first it is the music. If the music is good, then I am intereted and listen carefully to the lyrics etc. The performer(s) of the music is from minor importantance of the three, I guess.

If you like the music, most of the time the performer is okay too.

Music is first and foremost. It's a poor song if it has to depend on the lyrics. If you want good lyrics go read a fucking poem.

For me it is a combination of music and lyrics.
The artist/band is not important for me, as long as the music and lyrics are good and go together is all that matters for me.

I go with a combination of the three though I favor the music the most important element. All three are important, but so is context.

I think subconsiously is always a combination of all three. But the music is what does or does not stick in your mind at first listening, in my opinion.

Interesting thread.

I personally don't feel the full weight of good music should rest on any one aspect; we've all heard songs that would sound better if the vocals were removed, for instance.

I think what's important is how talented the band is, both as individuals and as a unit. Live performances are a great measure of this; I've seen a couple bands like (Queensryche and Tool come to mind) that were absolutely phenomenal. Other bands performed so poorly on stage it's pretty clear that they need to stick to the ole' recording studio.
:2 cents:

i vote for the music itself, of course.

it's the real universal language exactly for that. ;)

It's the music that matters the most to me, lyrics too.

I think you need to add a category: engineering/mixing. You can have great music, with all three components listed above, but it can come off very poorly because the producer had an ass-hat engineer. Good music needs to be done right. Don't mix like Green-day, for example.

Its definately the music for me...Its the arrangement of notes or melodies over chord sequences that sound good and that are strong. Lyrics can be just as important too. A song that would stand out lyrically would be something like Mariah Careys Without You or Beyonces Listen as they are vocally powerful and are sung over a good arrangement of music.

Im really into musicians/singers and bands who have brilliant musical ability & musicianship.

A song that I think has brilliant in all areas would have to be Dire Straits Tunnel of Love. He may not be the best singer but he sings about something I really connect with, and the music behind it is technically brilliant.

An example without lyrics would be Kenny Gs Sentimental....Its a powerful piece of music that he wrote for his wife while she was pregnant.
Also Joe Satrianis Crushing Day, another technically brilliant piece with an amazing arrangement.

The music. And structure. I prefer an original sound with a fresh take on song writing. Not your typical verse chorus verse chorus bridge yadda yadda yadda. It is possible to be catchy and memorable without sounding generic and re-hashed.

Honesty as well. It is always blatantly obvious when you listen to a song whether they wrote it for themselves, or they wrote it to impress someone else.

Keep on keepin on Chef. Good to see people using their creativity.
