No problemo! I don't live and die by my choices. If you've seen most or all of those movies you'll notice a tendancy towards heavy subject matters. I included a few movies, like Bandits, basically to "lighten up" my list a little - they're not necessarily my favorite movies.

BTW, I don't think much of Brendan Frasier either so I agree with your choice of words - he was definately "surprisingly good". Michael Caine was brilliant (as always)!

Another "different" kind of movie was the original Heavy Metal. That was a cool movie!

Thanks for keeing this thread alive and well, its always refreshing to know how much people love movies and why! Some great movies in your list Parker, I like your taste in movies, nice variety.
I heard that American History X is an excellent and deep movie, to bad I have nevr seen it, but i will eventually.

Thanx Scorp, this is a nice thread, a nice change of pace. I would have contributed to it sooner, but I had some computer problems that kept me offline for a couple of weeks - just got back online yesterday.

As far as American History X goes, I think there are flaws in the movie that hold it back a little, but overall it's still one of my favorites. A couple of reasons why: (1) Ed Norton gives his best performance ever and Ed Furlong (the kid from T2 in the only other movie he's done) is superb. (2) the emotional power of the movie (it's one of those "heavies" I mentioned earlier) is devasting and will still leave you thinking about it long after you've seen it.

Enjoy!

crackin film...eddy norton is one of my fave actors...never rated heavy metal...just seemed to be about showing naked flesh in cartoons...crazy

about american history x.It is a deep movie in all the sense of the terms.I have seen it three times.I had a lot of tears rolling on my eyes after the film ended. It is very shoking, very realistic and it makes you think twice about the problems of the racism that developped countries have to face. It has a real impact on you it shows you that tolerance, peace and acceptation of the other person are necessary to live in a peaceful world. Also it explains you the mechanism of the involvement of normal person or must i say person having a very low education in a such extremist and dangerous organizations.

nevermind we must always be careful and forward thinking. In my job as well as in my everyday life i always foresee things so i take mesures that can avoid me very embarassing situations. You don't know what the life can reserve you as my grandfather said:"we are all under god's hand" in a certain way that is true.

on those wise words i say peace and regards to everybody

Yeah, American History X is a classic. Very under-rated. You should check it out Scorpion.

I plan on it, I believe my wife's parents have this movie in their collection, I may borrow it from them and check it out. I always enjoy a movie that havs a strong and powerful message, some of my favorites in such a category would be Stand and Deliver, Lean on Me, Dangerous Minds, 187, Philadelphia, and Training Day. Pretty much any movie with a message is underrated in my eyes.

for that sort of film i tend to go to american history x, road to perdition, a perfect world, leon, leaving las vegas, glory...etc etc

why do you think this film wouldnt of seen the light of day?...cause matrix opened up a whole new ball park?....no chance.... the matrix is nothing new...dont get me wrong its a good action film and everything but hardly a classic in my eyes....they had money they had ideas for fight scenes....so they made a good special effects movie (im on about the first one here...second one in terms of special effects was on par with frikkin spiderman)

equilibrium borrows more off japanese animation then it does off the matrix...hell the only thing that makes this like the matrix is the clothes....

in terms of the philosophical aspects shit.....the guys just read a few books.... dante's inferno , the bible etc etc and nicked some stories and pasted them into the film to make it all seem believeable. HELL thats a fucking brillient idea its kinda original you dont see many action films where people are gettin shot out ever where that use aspects of the bible do you?...well apart from some of the nasty stuff in the bible anyways

at the end of the day yes it is opinions...and dude i respect yours and i totally understand why you like these films...they are massively enjoyable films but dont go beliving that the matrix opend doors into the film world....theres tons of films which didnt have the budget that the matrix had that came out years before hand (mainly japan and korea of all places) and because of that failed to get recognition....peace dude lets move on and talk about something else now eh?

I agree - Equilibrium is underrated. It has it weak points (why is it that Sean Bean is so underused these days - he was killed off too early imo; the love between John Preston & Mary O'Brien never took off, and after Preston dispatches damn near anyone with a gun and/or sword who evens looks at him the wrong way, it takes him several miutes to overcome "Father's Voice", who looked as if he could spend a few hours more in the gym.
But it's more than just a Matrix-clone, and I hope that a decade from now, Hollywood won't do a Clonus/Island job on this flick).

Other underrated movies:
Casino
Ronin
(Sean Bean didn't last long in that flick, either)
Event Horizon

PS: good thread!

starship troopers for me, one of my favourites for sure, never got the recognition it deserved... sequel sucked, but the original was a gem

Yeah I dug starship troopers too, never saw the sequal and with your ringing endorsement juballs, I doubt I ever will. I have to say though that Donnie Darko was one of the best films I've ever seen.

I got to see it on the big screen when they re-released it last year and I was blown away. The whole metaphysical argument behind the movie mixed with the underlying satire of 80s teen films was great.

For those of you who haven't seen it do yourself a favor and take the time and rent it. Well worth the money.

Two movies that I think are underrated are The Arrival and John Carpenter's The Thing.

:hatsoff: Jackson

I thought The Thing was a great paranoid creature-feature - Kurt Russell and the rest of the cast was on fine form, and considering the special effects were pre-CGI, it should be recognised as a classic.

Some to me are Dogma, Equilibrium (yes it is different from The Matrix), and Daredevil The Director's Cut. I know people hate Affleck and written off Daredevil as bad (which the theatrical one was) but the Director's Cut makes all the difference in the world. It's a new and better movie this way trust me.

Oh and I agree with Asiandude, Frailty is great.

Another underrated movie is Open Your Eyes (aka Abre los ojos) - it really grates me that this is overlooked by the dire Vanilla Sky remake. The only thing they have in common is Penélope Cruz.
