Model railroading....

Anyone into it. Or has anyone ever built a layout. I'm not talking about a train around the Christmas tree, or a train set you got for a present, I mean the prototypical kind, that requires planning, and scratch building. I'm thinking about starting a small one, in n scale, in a spare room...I'm just not sure if I'll have the time and money to proceed, to the eventual layout I would want.

Any thoughts, or suggestions?

I had a sweet N-scale setup in my basement when I used to live in St. Louis. Unfortunately, it got lost in the haze of the nasty divorce that I went through with my first wife and she ended up selling it off for whatever she could get. I'll never forgive her for it (she did it just to **** me off). I had built an outstanding diorama from plaster of paris and paper mache'....your typical mountain with a tunnel, a river with a terrific iron trestle, a railyard with switching facilities, a town with cars, buildings, a train station and people. I used to think that HO was the most authentic scale to use but after building the N-scale setup I decided that it was the best way to go. The smaller scale allows for more features in a given area. It was a blast to run. Maybe someday I'll do it again....although a basement is really ideal for such a setup and we don't have them in Texas so I may have to pass unless I can talk the wife into building a small structure dedicated to a train diorama. Not likely but it's a great hobby, very intricate, satisfying and frustrating at the same time but overall it is a lot of fun.

I went in the Cotton Belt Depot Museum in Tyler, Texas a couple of years ago and they had a lot of model railroads set up. I'm a big fan of the railroad and have published articles about the now abandoned local branch of the Cotton Belt line. If you decided to build a model post pics, and Jagger, I would love to see any pics that you might have of the model you built.

Which scale are the smallest trains? They are really detailed. I have never been into it, but I know a few people that are and they have some impressive layouts. I like the smallest scale trains the best.

The largest model railway in the world! In Hamburg, Germany. This thing is awesome! They have modeled and tried to copy places from all over the world, even great landscapes and all like mountains and the Grand Canyon. Haven't been there yet, but I want to someday. :)

There are some great pics in here. I know I'm going to use n scale. I have a 9 1/2 x 11 spare room. I wanna start small, with a 4x8 board, that has heavy switching activity, then add to it, and get a couple of long main lines running around the room.

I wish I had pics but this was way long ago so I don't have anything but memories to share, xfire. Sorry. I'll have to check out that museum in Tyler for sure. They still have models set up?

They've got a dozen or more sets going all at the same time. They've got one set of tracks mounted high on the wall near the ceiling that goes around the whole room. I've got pictures somewhere on my hard drive I'll have to dig out.

I used to collect from age 8 to 17 electric trains of HO Scale but after that it went far too pricey plus you need a lot of space to install a whole network. I used to collect brands that are no more like Lima, Jouef and Hornby

When I was a *** I had this Marklin set. Tunnels and a few towns and stuff. Not to eloborate, but I enjoyed it. It is in the attic somewhere.
hmm....
