MLB Trivia

One more record that should stand forever, highest career on-base percentage – .482 Set by Ted Williams from 1939 to 1960. Williams, the last man to hit .400 in a MLB season (.406 in 1941), won six American League batting titles, two Triple Crowns, and two MVP awards. He ended his career with 521 home runs and a .344 career batting average. Williams achieved these numbers and honors despite missing nearly five full seasons to military service. The next-closest player in career OBP is Babe Ruth at .474.

Since Williams' retirement, only four players have posted an OBP above .482 in a season, with Barry Bonds the only one to do so more than once. Bonds ended his career with an OBP of .444; the leader among modern day players.

Two other records that will stand forever are Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak and Cy Young's 511 victory's. If a pitcher were to win 20 games for 20 consecutive years he would still be 111 wins behind Cy Young.

I don't think Rivera's record of 652 saves will be broken. While not a record, I don't think we'll see another .400 hitter. Too many specialists in the game. I don't think Cal's consecutive game streak will be touched either.

Something else that we may never see again: A pitcher start and win 3 complete games in the World Series, pitch a total of 27 innings. Mickey Lolich, of the Detroit Tigers was the last pitcher to accomplish this in the 1968 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. And he beat Bob Gibson in game seven.

Note: Randy Johnson of the Arizona Diamondbacks won 3 against the New York Yankees in 2001. However, he had only one complete game victory and one of his wins was in relief. Johnson pitched a total 17 innings in the 2001 Series.

On March 29, 2008 the Boston Red Sox played the LA Dodgers in a preseason game. What marked this game historical?

True, but I'm going to need more than that.

I believe the game was played at the Los Angeles Coliseum the Dodgers first home field in L.A. I know the Coliseum seats well over 100,000. Was this the game the Dodgers set an all-time attendance record for a baseball game?
