Was given a very large (for the time - 1980) 2 year guaranteed contract. After making only 21 appearances with an ERA over 5 he was dismissed from the team and wasn't invited back in year two :1orglaugh

Been mulling it over and I can't answer it. I remember that Mike Coolbaugh died a couple of years back from a batted ball striking him but that was in the minor leagues. Drawing a blank on this one.

More of a question than MLB trivia. Dennis Bumgarner recently "set" a scoreless-innings record vs. Cards in post season play. With so many stats that make up the game who decides what threshold
is determined to set a record on a stat category. How does one set a record, but not "break" a record??

I think we're talking semantics here. "Set" and "break" would be synonymous as the terms apply to records from my perspective. The record he surpassed was originally "set" by Art Nehf of the NY Giants back in 1924. He broke it as far as I'm concerned.
