The Red Sox needed to resign Jason Bay or pick up his equivalent in an offensive player. On top of that, they needed to add a bat. Marco Scutaro? Mike Cameron? Get real. This team will be lucky to make the wild card. The idea of "rebuilding years" doesn't fly so well in a city where they expect you to pay $120 for a shitty obstructed view ticket.

I agree with you 100 percent. That's like the Yankees saying they were going to take a year or years for rebuilding, we would eat the Steinbrenners alive (with the exuberant ticket prices and such).
I really don't see the Sox getting the wild card (much less winning the division) unless they sign a big bat (which are scarce now barring any trades). The Sox have great pitching (maybe even better than the Yankees but thats up for debate) but I see a lot of close low scoring losses in 2010.
On a side note, I wonder where Aroldis Chapman is going to land.
Then we have the Cleveland Indians (frustrated Tribe fan 
)- our biggest off-season moves are Austin Kearns and Shelley Duncan?!?! Need I say more. Our starting rotating is in a shambles - we're praying Jake Westbrook comes back healthy, and Carmona can get back to his 07 form. A new manager we have questions on- (Acta)- who led the Nationals to something like 50 games under .500 in his tenure. We have potential young stars in Laporta and Brantley. Potential, though. Lets say how they do in a full 162 games. Pronk (Travis Hafner) has to get back to his 05-06 form- I believe he is healthy. Looking like another 90-loss season- I guess that's what we get when we have a cheap owner in a small market.

Don't dismiss Duncan. He is somewhat of a journeyman but shows flashes of brilliance at the plate (just has to learn how to handle a MLB curveball) and has decent defense. I **** that the Yanks gave up on him.
It looks like Aroldis Chapman is going to sign with the Reds(????) Good because that *** looks dangerous, I'm glad he's not going to the AL East (especially not to the Red Sox). I hope this investment pays off for the Reds because a 5-year 30 million dollar contract for a prospect is nuts.

I am sort of surprised as hell the Reds got Chapman - and pretty pleased.
The last couple of years, the Reds have made a splash in the Latin American arena, with the signings of youngsters Juan Duran and Yorman Rodriguez. They've had that presence since the days of Davey Concepcion and Mario Soto.
And it is Soto who has me very interested in the Chapman signing. Soto has worked with youngsters such as Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez. With this, he has earned quite a good reputation - especially in teaching them his rather nasty changeup. Combine his evil fastball with a nasty change, and the *** could end up being pretty special.

It's pretty clear at this point that the Red Sox aren't going after the high power guys like Bay. Instead, they've upgraded significantly in both pitching and defense. Assuming their additions play at their career averages, their pitching and defense easily gets into the top four of the AL. The thing that most people don't realize, is that Bay was a liability for the Sox in the field, and Cameron in center will put a better defender in left. Sure, they may not score as many runs, but if they don't allow runs like last year, they're definitely in the running for the East.
That's the first I've heard about Freese not playing third. Every major metric I've seen has him at the very worst as above average at third.
Duncan will definitely give that lineup some pop, but right now the question for him is health, and can he be at least average in the field. Career, he's a below average defender, but if he is healthy, his offense should take care of that.
I, for one, am happy the Sox didn't sign Bay. He put up numbers we're unlikely to never see again. And with the Mets, it wouldn't surprise me if he flounders quickly.
In theory, what you propose could work for Boston. It could work to atleast get them to the All Star Break and they can evaluate if there's a hot stick somewhere for a trade.

You're right, that's what the Padres preach, however in reality, the past three years they're 22nd in FIP, and 23rd in tRA. That tells you their pitching has been abysmal. Their offense is next to last in both OPS+ and wRAA over that same time period, and their defense is 26th in UZR over that same period. So while they preach that, what they've fielded is offensive suck, with a side of pitching mediocrity, and an extra helping of defensive suck. So while I see what you're trying to say, the comparison is flawed to say the least.
Add to that the fact that no one in the Padres organization can even come close in any meaningful pitching metric to the Sox starters, and you've got a basic idea of why the Sox are in good position.
As a Mets fan I'm kinda happy with the signing of Jason Bay but will reserve judgment until I see him on the field. I kinda want to see Delgado at first base but the only problem I have is him staying healthy and wonder if maybe the Mets should continue to have Daniel Murphy at that position. As for pitching I'm thinking maybe the Mets should go after John Smoltz, whether it's as a fifth starter or an extra arm in the bullpen. Maybe more as a relief pitcher for the inevitable meltdown of Oliver Perez.

Being a Yankees fan I have to **** the Red Sox and the Mets but I secretly wish the Mets well. It'd be great if we had 2 good ballclubs in New York. If the Mets can stay healthy I think they have a very good shot at the Wild Card if not the division this year.
I was thinking the same thing. I heard something about a warming-system for spectator seating in the stadium or something to that effect but the players, used to playing indoors, will be screwed in the beginning.
