It severely bothers me that the news of MJ passing has stopped the world in such a way....tells alot about our society when the passing of an ex-entertainer (lets face it - he hasn't put out music in years. All he's been the last ten yrs is just a media plug) upsets people more than the war overseas, children being abducted and molested in our own communities, the 15 million children who die every year from starvation. But who cares about those things? Jon and Kate got divorced! Mj is dead! Oooh I bet Lohan will overdose next week and Will.I.Am will get revenge on Perez and assrape him!

In a way, the death of Michael Jackson is another "Day the Music Died" in a sense, when The Bopper, Richie Valens, and Buddy Holly died in the plane crash, and when Elvis Died. You can surely utter the name Michael Jackson in the same breath of the dead legends. The man was amazing with music from the Jackson 5 and beyond. I remember when I got the Thriller Album I listened in awe. I'd play the album over and over again. I'm sure the thing isn't even playable now because I've probably worn it out.

You weren't old enough to experience Michael Jackson when he was awe-inspiring. All you've seen is the freaky manchild who did a lot of dumb things when he turned 40 and beyond.
He single-handedly MADE MTV. They would be nothing without him. It's ironic that that channel has gone into the Reality Whore TV shit 24/7 when MTV's coverage of MJ back in the 80s helped create the Reality TV shell we live in today.
Also, most people realize we're unlikely to see any musical talent like Michael Jackson ever again....the music business business is nothing but a copy/paste kind of business today. Anything remotely original gets copied to shit or it doesn't even make it on the airwaves today.

more importantly, senate votes on cap and trade and quite possibly, the house votes on card check. its sad when someone that age dies, but there ARE more important things to be concerned with.

I know the point you're making (and I somewhat agree), but you have to remember that Michael Jackson is not only an American icon, but a worldwide legend. He is literally one of the most famous people to have ever lived, so the coverage of his death is definitely newsworthy.
Anyway, it's weird, but I still don't believe that he's dead.
He is being cremated...since he was mostly plastic, his remains are being turned into Legos, so now the kids can play with him, and not vice versa.
Actually if you recall there were count them two huge court cases based on accusations by numerous victims. If it had only happened once then maybe it was just a publicity thing but it happened twice, and there werent just two victims there were many. Possibly even Macaulay Culkin, look how he turned out. Child molestation fucks people up. the reason the shit went away in the first place was because he through his money at it. Micheal Jackson was sick look at his face he had a goddamn identity crisis. Normal people dont do that. How could someone so rich and so popular spend his millions of dollars, he had some real problems. and he was sick.
