McDonald's hiring practices are discriminatory

There is no chance that that very poorly written, self contradicting and barely coherent diatribe was written by a journalist. It sounds more like an email chain forward than a piece composed by a pro. My verdict: epic fail, and no discrimination.

Epic fail for bad article/chain letter.
English is the common language of business. Its taught in China, Japan, Russia, France, Germany, etc....

So while you might get a neigborhood store speaking only spanish or french or whatnot, the english language is growing faster than any other language.

Yeah....discriminatory in that they usually only hire uneducated morons....we need more people with JD's, MBA's, and Ph.D's working for McDonald's.:crash:

LOL

I think there is a resentment in the bilingual qualities of the workers that are preferred by many employers. I imagine that if the community has a high number of spanish speakers, that they would prefer their employees to be bilingual. I goes back to the "if you are in America, learn fucking english or get out" mentality.

If you are a loser that wants work in Mcdondalds, knowing spanish is always a plus.:thefinger

Not true. Maybe the "lifers" are uneducated, but a huge amount of McDonalds employees are students working part time during college/university.

Here's the problem with the entire social networking revolution and readily available access to the Internet: Just about anyone can write something and claim to be a journalist. I'm sorry, but I didn't read any facts or statistics in that article or see any reputable sources to back up his claims. If you're going to call out a gigantic corporation like McDonald's and question their hiring practices, you need to have more proof than just your own personal observations from your hometown restaurant.

Technically, in the work place you are only mean't to speak one language infront of customers and fellow employees. If two Spanish people are speaking Spanish in front of a someone who doesn't speak that language, it is racial discrimination.

This here is down to the managers not following up on training procedures, just being fucking lazy.

This is not about discrimination by McDonald's. This is about immigrants looking for an opportunity. A friend of mine lives in Florida and has told me sees this regularly with Hispanics and Haitians.

Technically? Source, please? And how is it racial discrimination to speak another language in front of a customer? Language is not a function of race. In common thinking there may connections drawn between certain ethnicities and certain languages, but in reality, every language is natively spoken by several different races. Are you perhaps intending to simply refer to company policies of McDonald's and it just came out wrong?

I worked there as a manager, I was told it was not only company policy, but against the rules for most work places.

I understand what you are saying about about language, but look at it this way..

You walk into a restaurant in America, and you order food in English, then behind the counter, the (for example) pakistani order taker starts talking in Urdu to other Pakistani workers. You probably don't know what the hell is being said, it could be anything. Maybe casual, or it could be personal about you. "Hey look at this idiot, what a shitty shirt he is wearing".

From experience in retail, restuarant or otherwise, this happens a hell of a lot more than You Might think. That is why I didn't bat an eye lid when I was told it was racial discrimination, it makes sense to me.

I think Mcdonalds is a franchise and each location have a different owner that sets the rules as they see fit.

I don't see any problem with people speaking another language in from of me. This paranoia about people badmouthing you is a little bit too much. Why do you care? It can happen anywhere, behind your back, etc.

Furthermore, in Spanish, for instance, many words that are common and offensive such as idiot/idiota and stupid/estupido-a, imbecile/imbecil are too similar to english to not get a damn hint.

No, procedures are set out by the company and have to be followed by the franchisee. Maybe they will "set the rules as they see fit" for minor things, but during an audit they will get in trouble for not following the company way. After all, when something goes wrong it's the brand name that looks bad, not the franchise owner.

Many people don't. But many people do.

It's not paranoia.

That happens every time I approach a counter, and it never bothers me as long as they speak English to me. And regardless of whether it bothers someone or not, it is not, in any way, racial discrimination. I think you may need to look up that phrase, as it doesn't look as though you are clear on its definition.

If it makes you feel any better, I've had the same trouble with english speakers here. ;)
Almost no one but Aussies can speak Australian...it takes a lifetime to learn! :)
