Life After Death

Dogma of any kind is about control.
live in the tangable
To each his own and good times for all but I choose to not run my life through fanciful tales and cryptic writings....

I often wonder if spirits are connecting through our dreams, and sleep is the only way for them to reach out to us. Maybe they realize it would be too overwhelming to reveal themselves right now while we're awake? I'd probably freak out like a little girl and they know this, haha. It's fun to think!

It's all about what one believes will happen and some have had experiences.

Near-death experiences are 'electrical surge in dying brain'
I am amused at how cautiously they talk about their findings. Ultimately though one of the bigger supports for NDEs representing something truly out of body was the assumption that they occurred during times of brain inactivity; as it turns out, we simply weren't looking for the right sort of activity.

That different cultures experience different NDEs further supports this.

(this one isn't so compelling - but does gain some weight given the more recent study)

I believe there's something that awaits each and every one of us. I personally have a tough time grasping the idea that once you "die" that's the end. Can it be that simple? I don't know. The one thing I can say for sure is that I don't believe in an idealistic heaven or a hell. I think those two things are purely made up as part fantasy and part scare tactic.

When I die, my atoms will once again begin their journey to everywhere. Some of them will be released as gases - a few even being light enough to escape our atmosphere and float into the nothingness of space. Others, meanwhile, will be broken down by various bacteria and insects - perhaps even a larger predator, but will be broken down nonetheless and used as food stuffs by smaller species. Of course, those smaller species will be consumed by larger species and so on, some being consumed alive, some being consumed dead and so on and so on and so on, until bits and pieces of me are spread all over the world here and there after a couple of billions of years.

Meanwhile, our sun will become a red giant, essentially burning off anything on our planet's surface. Many of those burnt atoms will float off into space, a few others remaining on Earth. Who knows, maybe eventually a few of my atoms will float through space long enough that they join will trillions upon trillions of other atoms, a force large enough to ignite a brand new star (and creating more heavier elements), and perhaps another solar system which can sustain life - maybe even intelligent.

That is part of my religion. And instead of making me feel like the pawn of some supposed supreme being, it makes me literally feel like part of the universe's past, present and future...which makes me feel pretty damned good and enlightened.

Made me feel good too !

Shifty points out the way that we know there is life after death. Just not a conscience life after death that most think about.

The thought of life after death is as old as man. It existed before monotheism. Is it some awareness inside of us? Something we just "know" exists, like instinct? That thought certainly spins through my mind. Also, it may just be wishful thinking of thinking beings.

I don't know about that.

passenger, I've got to give you props for your dedication to the this thread, and quite a respectful dedication at that. I'd like to know: what is it that you're looking for here?

Thanks for the props. I am curious what others think and believe about the afterlife. Losing a family member for me was tough, especially when it was my mom. Nine months later and it's still tough. I hope that one day i can hear her voice again and see her.

The good thing about the truth is that it's true whether or not you believe in it.

"Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts."
"That is, if we investigate further, we find that the statements of science are not of what is true and not true, but statements of what is known to different degrees of certainty."

-Richard Feynman

Has science ever been wrong about it's claims? It seems to be that science is constantly evolving and correcting itself as new evidence/discoveries arise.

Sorry to read about your mom passenger57. I lost my mom in 1995 and it was quite the hard time. The entire first half of that year was awful. Unfortunately I never got any messages from beyond the grave or any indication that there's a heaven or God, and that she's there. This is probably why I don't feel confident in my beliefs, and how I believe in God depending on how I feel when I wake up in the morning. I'm feeling great today so I believe.

Some dreams I have might be just that.

Thank you ,humperbink. It will be a year the day before Thanksgiving since she passed. Holidays will be tough but all the days are still hard. Doesn't take much to be reminded of her whether a song, something on tv, the yard. Some people handle it better than others. I do the best I can. My mom appears in my dreams often and I am still remembering most of these dreams with her. Nobody can take away what I believe and feel inside. I do hope that one day a family reunion will happen when it's time.

Although I hate fuckin religion, I believe there is a higher power and we do not die.

I often have dreams about my mom. The dreams I hate are the ones where I'm trying to walk closer to her, but something keeps pushing her away or pushing me away. Probably my brains way of realizing I'm either never going to be close to my mom again, or I'm never going to be close to her while I'm alive and she's not. Oh and Thanksgiving is a hard holiday for me for a couple reasons. One, losing a dog that meant a lot to me several years ago the day before Thanksgiving (it was a hard day when she had to be put down) and two... getting thrown out of the house by my dad's girlfriend (her home) two years ago on Thanksgiving due to a heated fight. I missed the Cowboys/Dolphins game!
