Is living off the US guv better than working if you only make $30k/year?

$30k per year would be phenomenal for me. I only make about $12k per year at my current job. After my monthly bills and food, I have maybe... $100-$200 to spare. It's rough, but it can be done.

That aside, to respond to the OP, I would prefer working for the money. Some of the others in this thread have made good points. I've been jobless before, and it sucked having to mooch off of other people. I felt like a leech and I hate asking people for things. I also can't stand boredom. After some time without a job, life can get a little boring. Having a job can keep you busy and like some others have noted, it's a great payoff mentally to know that you earned that money.

There's this girl that just quit at the place I work. 2 days after she quit, she came back asking for her job back, to work 1 day per week, so that she can sit on her ass all day and collect unemployment. She was collecting unemployment while she was working with us, and now that she doesn't, she won't get unemployment much longer because not having the job makes it look like she's not trying. And clearly, she's not. She was a terrible worker and I am so glad she quit. The answer to her coming back? Big fat NO.

I'm curious, what job did you work with this girl in and are you still doing it on the side?

I can only dream of getting 30k! That's a lot for a single person! I don't even get half of that right now.

You get Euros, which is probably more than $s. At the moment I get a paltry £12K plus whatever I can rake in from private tuition, which isn't much, but foruntately I enjoy my job and am not incredibly stupid with money (for example, you know how most guys wanna buy the latest console? Well fuck that, I'm still happy with the PS2 I bought sometime around 2004-5. Why would I need to spend more on something else?)

If gas goes up to 4 and 5 dollars a gallon then there will be many more applying for government assistance.

Also, a rise in crime and riots.

So, they better get on the ball and fix the gas problem.

There's no reason for gas to cost as much as it does.

That is price gouging. Purposefully manipulating a commodity to increase profits is wrong.
Especially when it hurts people and the economy.

We need more oil refineries and more drilling.

I was reading another forum, and a poster said that it is better to live completely off the US government than work a job that will only pay $30,000 dollars per year. He said the standard of living is better with the food, health, housing, social security, utilities, and any and all benefits possible, I have heard they even give poor people cell phones. He said if you only earn $30k per year you will have a much lower standard of living than you would with full government benefits.

Personally, I think this may actually be true, though I am not sure as I wouldnt have a clue about the US welfare system, other than they give ghetto bitches a bigger check the more babies they have, I have heard its a game to have the most babies in some areas.

The question is, is it better to just sit back and live off the government if you are only making $30k per year salary before tax. This is based on the USA, but it would be interesting for people from other countries to say at what point of annual income is it better to be living off the guv?

Yes, ghetto trash filthy whores do get more $$$ every baby they have and they should be fixed after they have been found to be serial offenders or having knowingly done so to steal money from the taxpayer.

As far as otherwise, there are some real perks to being a deadbeat (indigent hospital billing, EBS, Section 8/HUD housing, for example) but despite how far our economy has gone in the shitter $30K is plenty enough to get by, drive a decent (reliable) car and pay your rent. I haven't tried to milk the system but I know a few kids that have and do. I know girls who like to squirt 'em out because they know they get more state dollars.

It's not living off the US Gov, it's moochin off of the people who have rightfully decided to make something of themselves.
Living off of the guv shouldn't be a permanent lifestyle, it should be a benefit to those who are physically or mentally incapable of working for a living and/or for those who genuinely can't find work during tough economic times.
Moochers actually reduce the benefits of those who need them most, stop it!

All I need is the government to stay off my back if apocalypse comes around.

I was just one of 9 brats living on my grandfather's dairy farm with an overworked mother and a father that did everything from selling vacuum cleaners to repairing highway billboards. Anything to keep himself on the road so he didn't have to deal with his offspring.

We were poor and happy - and never once did we suck the government tit.

if you're able bodied and have no children or other conditions that may get you free money there's no way to get section 8 or anything. those services are only avail. to single mothers, families who are homeless etc. why do you think illegals have large families? every extra baby is more money $ $ $$$$$$$........
