I has a Kindle

im feeling a kindle schmendle vibe here.

surprising.

besides, a book smells like a book. id miss that. this book im reading from the early 80s has got that awesome old comfy book smell.

I was very resistant at first to the idea. 'Pshaw, a book is a book. I want to feel paper, smell paper ...' etc, etc. But the more I read I was intrigued, particularly by the resolution technology.

I honestly expected to be underwhelmed, but the pad is a little work of genius. As I said earlier, not only does it read as well as paper, it's actually better. The page flipping is simple and clever and as quick as a manual page turn. The pad weighs less than a pulp paperback, hold 3,500 books that you can organize as a library, by collection, author etc. you can make notes, highlight passages, all of which are archived and saved and can be shared.

The only real adjustment is having only one, instead of two page surfaces in front of you, and that takes about 30 seconds to get used to.

They're only $140 now (if you opt for wi-fi only and not the free 3G (which is $50 extra) - and as I don't imagine the situation where I am walking down the street and must immediately download the Divine Comedy (or the Firm!!) - who needs the 3G?)

I've looked into them, but I need something that reads .pdf formats without having the faff of converting them to the type of file the reader uses. And of course Amazon makes it rather difficult for those not in the UK or US to get one (has to come from the US store and half of the books aren't available due to copyright issues).

So I'll patiently wait for a tablet that does what I want with .pdfs.

How much did Amazon pay you for this endorsement? :D

I know! It's not often I am so enthusiastic about a 'product', but I'm also a big believer in credit where credit's due.

If they can make the MP3 player comparable in functionality to the major MP3 players on the market, and add a color option so you can read graphic novels etc, it'd be just about perfect.:hybrid:

and it is fucking awesome. I can't put it down. :D

Anyone else have one?
Me.

They are for lazy people. Get a real book and flip the pages.

No, they're for the cool ****.

I have no need for one. I much prefer to read real books. If I want to read something on an electronic device, that's what literature.org and Project Gutenberg are for, and they can be accessed on my phone.

I have the Kindle app on my Droid 2 (used to have it on Blackberry), my ipad2, my ipod touch... It's accessible via many devices. I like that if I purchase a Kindle book, I can read it on any of my devices that have the Kindle app. Hubby is reading a Tom Clancy book on the ipad, and I read a few chapters on the Kindle. We also have quite a few ********'s books on 'em. Don't think he'll be reading my Nicholas Sparks books, though...

What kind of world is this where a cat has a Kindle and I do not? There is no justice in this world!

I've been looking at it, actually. It would be a lot more environmentally friendly, and would give me a very good chance to look at a lot of classics I've not had the chance to look at yet.

Big deal you have a Kindle...I have a Guttenburg Press so put that in your pipe and smoke it. You should see me try to tuck it up over the comparment bin on an airplane.

Yeah, I only want to buy one tablet. It has to multi task, run flash, take books of multiple format, and cost less than 100$.

Okay, maybe not the last part.

Some good news on this topic, though - I'm now able to get books for kindel from my library. It's pretty cool.

This is a good idea for when the Eloi just leave books sitting on the bookshelf in 180,000 A.D. and they end up crumbling to dust.

I has one too!

I picked up the 3G version for my girlfriend who loves to read. She was very apprehensive, and said she did not like the idea of not being able to feel a paper book in her hands, but fell in love with the Kindle immediately and it is now her most favored possession.

I wanna eventually get a kindle. I just have a lot of books (don't wanna rebuy) and I do like having my collection physically in front of me.

What's a Kindle?
