Sounds like it may be a monster by the time Monday rolls around. We've been monitoring the information off and on all day today; hope to God those people in New Orleans pay attention to the warnings of FEMA.

They're projecting it could become a Cat. 4 by early Monday morning and move ashore directly over N.O. by that afternoon.

Living almost directly due west of N.O.; well, if it came ashore here? Pffft. This city would be washed away... think about this: New Orleans is five to six feet BELOW sea level. There would be nothing left...

Glad to hear you made it through safe and sound.

I've herd it estimated that if a strong Hurricane ever hit New Orleans directly it would be around 50,000 deaths!!! It isn't just the fact that it is below sea level, but also that it has Lake Ponchatrain above it on the other side. In some places it would be over 20 feet deep in the city. You would have to evacuate well ahead of time. If not the streets would be so clogged it would be impossible to get everybody out on time. I'm almost surprised it hasn't happened already. My sister went on vacation to New Orleans this year and she was surprised when I told her about this.

We were talking about just that earlier today actually. He's got distant family living in New Orleans and they were saying that although evacuations aren't mandatory as of yet, they are strongly advising people to get out no later than tomorrow morning... otherwise it'll be too late.

I know that from what little time I've been here in Houston with him that whenever it rains heavily here for more than two or three hours, there's major street and underpass flooding. You can blame that on all the road construction... rather than going UP with the road grades, they're digging down almost into the water-table. We're not but five to ten feet above sea level.

He showed me pictures of the Tropical Storm Alison from a few years back and it comepletely submerged this city. Semis floating merrily along I-10... water chest deep in the street...

I just hope there's no loss of life when this thing come ashore. Having been land-locked for most of my life, this is something new for me... quite intimidating, actually.

Just keep 'em all in your thoughts, y'all. This thing is & could be a monster hurricane... :dunno:

New Orleans orders evacuation
Hurricane Katrina's winds nearly 175 mph
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin declared a state of emergency on Sunday and ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city as Hurricane Katrina churned toward the city with maximum sustained winds of nearly 175 mph.

All of Orleans Parish falls under the order except for necessary personnel in government, emergency and some other public service categories.

People who are unable to evacuate were told to immediately report to a designated shelter.

"I wish I had better news for you, but we are facing a storm that most of us have feared," Nagin said. "I do not want to create panic, but I do want the citizens to understand that this is very serious and it's of the highest nature."

Traffic out of the city was bumper to bumper -- but officials said that it was moving.

A shelter has been set up at the Superdome for people who cannot leave the city for medical or other reasons.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said low-lying areas along the Gulf Coast could expect storm surges of up to 25 feet as the Category 5 storm makes landfall early Monday.

Officials fear New Orleans is vulnerable because it sits an average of 6 feet below sea level. (Watch video of how New Orleans reacted to warning)

Nagin said the storm surge would likely topple the levy system that protects the city.

"It has the potential for a large loss of life," said Max Mayfield, director of the NHC. (Watch CNN meteorologist explain storm outlook)

Katrina is blamed for at least seven deaths in Florida, where it made landfall Thursday as a Category 1 hurricane. As much as 18 inches of rain fell in some areas, flooding streets and homes. (See video of the damage floodwaters left in one family's new house)

"The time has come to evacuate," Louisiana National Guard Lt. Col. Pete Schneider told CNN on Sunday. "This is a dangerous, dangerous hurricane, and it poses a huge threat to southeastern Louisiana." (See video from New Orleans, where not all are ready to leave)

At 8 a.m. ET, Katrina was centered about 250 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. It was moving to the west-northwest at about 12 mph.

u live in miami and thats ur first hurricane?... u just move to the area or what?

Re: Hurricane

Hurricane Katrina on MSN

This thing is immense. It's projected as one of the largest storms to EVER hit the US, let alone the Gulf. The largest storm to ever hit New Orleans was a Category 3 decades ago, but Katrina is a Category 5. Considering the fact that the city is 6 feet below sea level...

The mayor has ordered an evacuation of the entire city. Inbound freeway has been made outbound only. The Superdome is a designated emergency shelter.

Even if you're not religious, you might want to utter a prayer for these people.

Edit: Strongest hurricane to hit NO was a Category 4 in 1915, not a 3 as I previously stated.

To back him up, here are some facts:

The Deadliest Hurricanes | Top

1. The Grand Isle Hurricane
Louisiana
September 1909
Death toll: At least 350

The Grand Isle Hurricane came ashore on September 20, 1909, at Berwick before passing inland between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The category 4 storm caused $6 million of damage and its 15-foot storm surge inundated much of southern Louisiana.

2. New Orleans, Louisiana 1915
New Orleans, Louisiana
September 1915
Death toll: 275

This category 4 storm caused Lake Pontchartrain to overflow its banks, killing 275 people. That scenario is one that hurricane experts don't like to ponder because if the city, surrounded on three sides by water, is hit by a major hurricane, the storm surge might inundate the city.

The Most Costiest Hurricane | Top

Hurricane Andrew
Southeast Florida and Louisiana
August 1992
Cost: $26.5 billion

Andrew, the most expensive natural disaster in United States history, cut a path through the northwestern Bahamas, the southern Florida peninsula and south-central Louisiana. The category 5 hurricane came ashore on August 24, 1992, near Homestead, Florida, resulting in 15 deaths. As many as 250,000 people were left temporarily homeless. More than 700,000 insurance claims were filed relating to Andrew.

Other hurricanes | Top

Hurricane Camille
Mississippi and Louisiana, 1969
One of two U.S. Category 5 hurricanes this century

What is scary is watching the commentators from the BBC, CNN, Fox News, etc. smack bang at "ground zero" of the hurricane's path...
