Just so you guys can see what kind of flooding New Orleans has encountered, click on the following link. It's a Satellite image of the same area... one before Katrina and one after...

You can also zoom in for a more detailed view...

It's going to take some time to repair this damage.

Quick question: is the following story true? Apparently it's a report on looting...by the police:

this all very very sad....i wish i was able to spare some extra money or wish i could go help out some how. my heart goes out to all the people.

the only thing i have to say about the looting is what the hell you going to do with the damn t.v on computers? you have no damn power and the stuff well be so water loged it well never work...
get the damn food, water diapers and all the other stuff you need to live. don't worry about the other stuff

That would be too logical for some people it seems. What are you going to do with your trinkets that you plundered? Sit around in a watered out house for three months with no way of getting food just so you can have that television set you carried for three blocks in five feet of water.

There is one more item we should be aware of. The hurricane season lasts until (I think) the end of November (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

While everything appears relatively quiet:

http://www.mdweather.com/hurinfo1.shtml

what's now worrying me is the possibility of another storm on the horizon.

Indeed...there could be more rain on the way and another storm somewhere, and if it is enough to overflow the levees that are not even repaired yet then we could see even more destruction. What I am worried about is new orleans being a total loss. I was just telling my wife that it would probably be more cost efficeint to abandon NO, but where would all the people go and to abandon one of our major cities is just unthinkable

I doubt they will abandon it..
But there is going to have to be some serious money spent on flood defences.

om3ga, you are correct about hurricane season. And, if I am not mistaken, axxxc will know, September is the most active month for hurricanes. Even a tropical storm would be devastating for this region right now. (As if the region is not devastated enough.) A tropical storm has sustained winds <75 mph.

Also, most thieves, not all, but most, are stealing for re-sale to obtain cash for drugs. A $300 T.V. would be turned around for $50 cash.

It is sad that the looting and barbaric behavoir of some have become damn near the main story. To reference this situation as tragic is an understatement.

Yes,sir... you are indeed correct. Late August on into the month of September is the most active time period for Atlantic tropical weather patterns to form and threaten both the Eastern seaboard as well as the Gulf Coast

Thanks Asianxxxchick and om3ga! Glad you liked it.

Changes have to be made I think, the earlier the better. War against terror may be right but freezing money for environmental policy, protection of coastlines, not joining the Kyoto Protocol etc. is definitely wrong.

A lot of people in the USA and elsewhere are learning this the hard way right now.
(Sorry for the poor people who have to suffer because of this).

Countries & organizations have also stated their desire to assist the US in their time of need:

PS: good luck also to those Japanese who have Typhoon Nabi to contend with...

My town accepted 80 evacuees and set the up at a convention center.
Some people in town who have been on the list for low income housing for years, are upset that the evacuees have pushed them to the side.
One evacuee here was found with some crack and I guess does not have to share his space with 79 other people.

There is a city around were I live that wants to take in some people, but they are having some problems. In housing they have some space available, but some of the rules that have been set in place are making things difficult. From what I hear they are not allowed to do things like conducting background checks, making them pay security deposits, or having them pay rent. Although the government said it would reimburse them for the housing.....at some point.

Another situation that has come up that might be even worse is jobs. The area has a high unemployment rate, and there have been people that have gone years without hardly any work, or work where they are going to earn a living wage. Lets just say the talk about just giving the people that relocate here a job to work has gone about as well as you would expect to in that situation. That and some of the other problems that have come up look like it's going to derail any effort to place people here.
