how long before DVDs are outdated?

I have about 150 DVDs and about that many VCR tapes. I was wondering when the DVDs would be a dead technology. it wasnt that long ago that VCRs were the thing to have. when will I be pushing the DVDs aside for something new?

not sure but Id hate to think I have to buy Braveheart again:1orglaugh

its already upon us. if you know where to look, you will never have to buy another dvd again.

I think DVD is here for a lot longer because its a cheap, viable solution for data storage and DVD5 pi***y! :shining gleam off my salesman teeth:

Until Blu or HDDVD really, REALLY take off.. I'm satisfied with the DVD's I already have, or view. And.. I have a HDTV. I'm awestruck at the differences between DVD and true HD.. but I'm not about to plunk down any money for the upgrade. I'm thinking too many people are just completing their DVD collection right now. Buy new ones? Expensive, why? So I can get rid of MPEG2 artifacts and neutralize any moire effects? Brother, hell no. This isnt the 80s. The decades of excess are a memory as of this moment. Gas prices fluctuate wildly, tech comes and goes.. and I can buy 15 DVD's at the dollar store for 3$. Sorry Blu and HD, you aint snaggin' me ANYtime soon.

Actually, tell ya what.. how about DVD makers rip out the damned extra languages and tone down the menu's + special features and up picture quality for a change, huh? I'm only going to watch the special crap once, if even that. (Go figure, I bought into DVD back in '97 for special features and picture quality, and now the special features are pretty much crap. Doesnt hold the same appeal as it used to. Director and actor COMMENTARY, however.. is still usually pretty kick-ass, tho)

Yeah, bandwidth is the new medium.

Hardly. If you mean the stream over digital cable or satellite.. that isnt without its flaws. If you mean the internet..well, hey..if you're dealing with HD content, its sorta like dial up as far as bandwidth goes. Small pipe, large stream.

I guess what I meant was... Bandwith will become the new medium.

As new technology becomes more accessible to the common man, bandwidth will increase, to the point were a T3 connection is as standard for a home as electricity.

5 years ago 2 Mbit downloads were for the super-rich, now it's only $49.99 a month.

lol i am having trouble creating a dl dvd with m,y fav tv eps on but nero keeps crashing. mind you the files are like 200mb plus avi files :p.....

Well, there was nothing more fun than messing up a burnt CD (after they had the faster burners, not back in the day when it was an hour long process) and taking it out back and seeing if I could get it to stick in a tree.

Not to quibble, but I had a 9 Mb cable line back in '97 for maybe 40 bucks? A'course I bought in somewhat early.. less people on the grid. As far as DSL goes, a 6 meg line is still rare and almost as pricey.

Try discjuggler. Are you trying to create a divx DVD(does your DVD player support 'em?), data DVD (PC only) or convert them to mpeg2? (true DVD fashion)

Bill Gates has said they'll be history within five years as no one will waste time toting little discs around.

Maybe so. I think a time is.. or is NEARLY upon us where people are damning their electronic devices for being as INCREDIBLY SMALL(!!!::mad: ) as a contact lense!

"NOBODY MOVE! I DROPPED MY CELL PHONE!"

*CRUNCH*

"F!CKER! You stepped on it!"

I dont mind a disc. If they were UMD-size, that'd be a bit nicer, maybe. But I only really have a complaint with videocassettes. Unwieldy medium with absolute sh!te quality!
