This is my understanding: A Redneck = Ignorant white trash you can find living almost anywhere in the US. A Hillbilly = A rural farmer usually living in the mountainous areas of the US. Mostly in The Appalachian and Ozark regions of the US.

While serving in the NAVY, the coolest mofo I ever met was from Arkansas and he told me he was straight up Hillbilly, we got along great. OTOH, the most racist shipmates I had to put up with were fucking rednecks from Florida.

I've noticed the same thing about people from Arkansas. It is sort of geographically isolated so maybe the different ethnic groups had a different history of interactions.

I think you're mistaking "Hillbilly" for inbred...there is a difference!

Yes if the rural people are hillbillies.

Redneck is an unknown concept at least in Finland.

Hill People are like the guys in O Brother Where Art Thou, and their music is Appalachian Bluegrass, religious hymns, and whatever they like on the radio.. Many are modern enough, but keep to themselves due to a distaste of Godless dufus type city folks who think Hillbillies are stupid.
I like these types, and they have a dead on funny sense of humor that laughs at themselves as much as at others.
VERY creative people, in making stuff work and in coming up with ways to get by.

I've met a lot of great hillbillies who could fix or fabricate anything. The ones who get a chance at higher education make great agricultural scientists and engineers. some of those same great guys became violent, stubborn assholes when drinking.

Some are said to have a talent for business too. And yes, when we... I mean, they overindulge in alcohol, bad things have been known to happen. You might find that hillbillies (and Hill Williams) might speak the King's English when sober, but when drunk, they might revert to their feral roots and get "redneck" on your ass. Someone getting redneck is something that people will actually warn you about, if they think you're about to make a wrong move around the wrong person.

In general terms, hillbillies are often decent people... no different at their core than any other group of people - just misunderstood because they're culturally different. But rednecks are usually going to be a problem... sooner than later. Rednecks are pretty much just backward countrified gangstas.
