Metallurgy. Without it, no tools, and without that, no advanced civilization. Though equally important especially from the Greeks onward was math, science, and their application (engineering).

Being that language didn't make the list I have to go with religions. Most if not all of these inventions were looked at as a gift from God or Gods. And they were perfected in his or her name. Hate it or love it. It's true

Metallurgy. Without it, no tools, and without that, no advanced civilization. Though equally important especially from the Greeks onward was math, science, and their application (engineering).

And this is why.
almost all human advancement is due to the ability to manipulate metal.
places with metal advanced while places without never did.

there was really no advancement from the earliest known history of humans until the time when metal came into play.

areas of the world who did not have the knowledge of metallurgy up until recently were the same as theyd always been.
Areas that used metal advanced, particularly europe and japan.

this is also what gave them the ability to conquer the americas, china, africa, australia ect., thus affecting everything up until this very moment in time.

if you really think about it this is the most influential regarding history of all.

Why save the world, when you can rule it?
Metallurgy is out: wood (and other natural substances) can be used for terrific things in early civilisation and modern resins can be used in place of metal, as they are in F35, in modern civilisation.

Only literature allows you to share knowledge and keep it alive after the wise guy dies.
Fire is not necessary noce you have electricity and lasers could be deployed in place of fire for manufacturing duties.

I'm watching some specialist videos
Difficult choice.
Without mastering fire we would be nowhere.
Without writing we would be nowhere.
Without the wheel we would be going nowhere.

In the end I plumped for writing as it allows us to pass on ideas to many people without it changing.
(Yes, I know that re-writing can change it, but at least this will be slower than the corruption that takes place when word of mouth is used).

Use a Pentagon instead of the wheel. Maybe a Chingon.

gotta go with fire from that list...i was thinking more specific inventions and i had the antikythera mechanism in mind, it's mechanical computer for gods sake!

Writing

It's how we have been able to go back and truly have accounts of the times before us. Though it obviously hasn't helped us as we seem to keep repeating old mistakes.

Along with many others on here I have to say that fire was not an invention, so that's out.

And while I really wanted to go with music and art, as they're two of my most favorite things on the planet, I think I have to agree with this...

Without writing where would art and music be as we wouldn't have access to some of the greatest masterpieces in history. I don't want to imagine a world without the works of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Shakespeare, Van Gogh, Bizet, etc.

You have a very good point as I would die without my Bach, Beethoven Handel and fernando sor.

ok let me say again .
its metal damn it!

every area in the world had fire, language, wheels, some sort of written language, agriculture, some kind of religion, some kind of currency, ect ect.

and those areas stayed the same for thousands of years with no change, no advancement.
basically primitive man, and in some places these people still exist.
it was the people and the areas who learned to use metal that began the advancement of the human race.
egyptians, greeks, romans, vikings, spanish, ect ect all advanced , conquered and prospered due to their uses of metal...........

I'm going with unsliced bread. It was an invention that wasn't surpassed until sliced bread came about. That's why it's the gold standard by which all great things are judged. ;)

And without writing one will never be able to take metallurgy to it's greatest potential.
Metal has been surpassed; F35 is made of a variety of resins and many sportscars are adopting carbon fibre.
