Governmenrts new ray gun???

I saw that today, I have no clue how that can possibly work. Might heat the whole house this Winter!

"Military officials say it could save the lives of innocent civilians and service members in places like Iraq and Afghanistan."

"The weapon is not expected to go into production until at least 2010."

Well, we now know this Iraq war is not close to being over...

The military's new weapon is a ray gun that shoots a beam that makes people feel as if they will catch fire.

The technology is supposed to be harmless — a non-lethal way to get enemies to drop their weapons.

there has got to be an easier way..this just seems stupid.

^^ An easier way, it's not possible when your fighting insurgents and others they don't care if they are up against superior firepower, they will go down swinging to the last man and this new ray gun wil not make much difference IMO because they are already live in a scorchingly hot climate, so feeling like your clothes are on fire will not make these people drop their weapons im afraid.

Sounds like it would be more useful for crowd control situations, not so much to make enemies drop their weapons. The best way to make sure the enemies drop their weapons is to kill them.

It sounds like a simple version of directed microwaves, to me. Stick your hand in a microwave and you'll feel the burn, too... despite a total lack of flame/heat.

Nothing particularly special about this tech, I'd think. Direct a concentrated, high frequency beam at people. You could do the same thing with a satellite, but you'd need extreme coordination and timing. Not to mention the whole sending-up-40-odd satellites so that you have 100% uptime, billion dollar budget side effect.

Yeah...let's deal with riots the Uzbek way...just open fire!

Well I got a question..if it's like the microwaves why don't terrorist or whomever where futuristic tin foil clothing lol like in all those old twilight zone shows....or if it's like sun rays why don't you just bust out a compact mirror????? The females shouldn't have much to fear if they have their purse handy....:dunno:

I think the atmosphere might alter the beam a little on the way down. It's a microwave and not a laser so that could probably cut through the atmosphere better though. I remember reading about people that said if they did that with lasers in the future they would have to take into account the way the molecules in the atmosphere bend light in the same way it bends when entering water. Of course if you could get it powerful enough (and any beam shot from space would have to be ridiculously powerful) the heat it creates would displace the air around it on the way down and mitigate the effects of it. Of course it wouldn't be instantaneous then.

I think the opposite is true also where you could send up microwaves to satellites to damage their circuitry. If you know your being watched then you know where they’re at also because their right above you.

go with the old school system, the M2HB or the m60e3 or even fn minimi mk 249 are the only true and tried options, forget about this useless expensive gadget.

When I first heard about this technology some time ago, I thought that it was for use against riots and to disperse people. Kind of like how rubber bullets and teargas is used today.

The article said that it's not painful, but I wonder if they wouldn't use a more powerful version, if they had to bring it into areas like Iraq and Afghanistan. I'm not sure if discomfort will be enough to disarm insurgents or terrorists. And the waves can't even go through walls, and I wonder if the same is true for cars as well. I kind of doubt that it'll be all that useful in such areas, though there could probably be use for it in neutralizing suspects, or if many civilians are nearby. But I do wonder how well it will even perform against a crowd out in the open. I guess it depends on how many people it can hit at a time, and how long the effect lasts.

It does sound interesting though, and I'm in favor of more non-lethal weapons.
