Game of Thrones

Dumb question, but I'll ask it anyway: When was the last time the bad guys lost and the good guys won?

Are you positive that the bad guy won last week? Oberyn got his confession as his spear was sticking out of Gregor's chest. Who says that Gregor survived or will survive?

Pffft. Dragon bait.

Could dragons survive the intense cold of the Wild North? I realize the Walkers could, well, walk South, but I wonder whether in a battle in the deep North, dragons would really be able to survive?

No one ever seems to have an unbeatable advantage in the Thrones universe.

Of what use is a confession to a dead man? I consider the bad guy winning if he gets to kill the hero, even if he dies as well. And Ellaria is "alone in the world" now, so she lost as well.

And also: Tywin won and Tyrion lost.

Man, there is some serious despair in this thread. I took the Red Wedding about as well as some of you are taking the brain bashing. It was gory & über disturbing, but I've been thinking about it (kind of hard not to, as awful as it was), and man, Oberyn was just asking for it. He was so incredibly cocky. The writers went to great length to set it up that way. He was almost acting like a James Bond villain in that he was doing just about everything he could to make a spectacle out of it that he failed to actually kill the guy. Granted, he had a pretty serious beef and he wanted a confession in order to get justice, but it wasn't until he stopped to practically gloat that the Mountain seized an advantage and, well, you know.

However, FWIW, I do not believe Tyrion's time is at an end. I haven't read the books, but I think he'll get out of this somehow. Remember, the penultimate episode each season is usually the one with the major shocker. As David & D.B. promised, they have now delivered several big shockers, so who knows what's in store for S04E09.

Personally, I think they've been setting up some sort of serious Lannister catastrophe. The Lannisters are out of money (or at least not mining any new gold), both they and the Crown are in deep to the Iron Bank, and Stannis is gaining some traction on that front. Beyond that...I don't know, maybe it's just a feeling. But they've been winning a lot and for a really long time. It seems like something must be coming their way. Losing Joffrey was a blow, but not a really big one, in the end. Losing Tyrion would not really strike a big blow to the family, so I don't think that's it. It's high time someone really significant betrayed them, so that's what I'm thinking will happen next week. Possibly in S04E10, but more likely the next episode.

Dany's probably about to suffer some kind of setback as well. She's been too successful for too long without really losing anything of significance. I think losing Jorah is only the beginning for her.

But there are still tons of reasons to be hopeful, both for the Starks and for those who are anti-Lannister. I even think Stannis may finally be nearing the end of his infatuation with the Red Woman. He's been getting too much grief from everyone about it, most recently from the Iron Bank. I think once Melisandre threatens his daughter, it will be over for her.

Plus, Bran may be nearing a significant discovery. I'm imagining him leading an army of animals or some other creatures South to attack Rayder's army or the Others from the rear, while the Watch and the combined armies of Westeros attack from the Wall. It's a little far-fetched, but time will tell.

Arya may finally be getting out of those clothes sometime soon, so that will be nice. (As a side note, I think we may witness a showdown between Brienne and the Hound before the season is out.)

Sansa is finally starting to recover from all her losses and come into her own.

Jon is going to go places, I can tell they're ramping his story line up for something.

And then the whole thing will come crashing down in some kind of awful blood bath. But there will be some victories along the way.

True, at least as regards the first two points. Ellaria is pretty screwed. Her life and lifestyle were pretty closely tied to Oberyn, so unless another Martell wants her, she's kinda done. I believe 'Sand' is the equivalent of 'Snow', so without a family of any repute, she could end up working in one of Little Finger's brothels pretty soon.

But I'm not so sure about Tywin winning. Remember Tyrion's conversation with Jamie where he says he asked for Trial by Combat in part because if he let the trial go to judgment, his father would get everything he wanted. So Tyrion has already robbed Tywin of regaining his rightful heir. All he has to do now is...live...and he's not dead yet.

Dragons/Dany have no reasons to go north. The White Walkers are inexorably heading south, to their own crispy demise. There would be no battle at all ; just fire.

You sick little monkey.

I don't know. In the opening sequence of the Show (which is obviously seen through the eyes of a dragon), we go all the way to the Wall. Plus, all that Dragon Glass was stored at the Fist, which is North of the Wall.

These don't mean anything, of course, but it's not like it's impossible the Dragons would head North. My point was more about how no one seems to have a really decisive advantage in this universe. Sure the Walkers are totally vulnerable to fire, but could it really be as simple as adding a dragon or two and poof, we have a White Walker-cide on our hands?

There may be some kind of mitigating factor.

Wow, my nerd quotient is really through the roof today.

Big jumps. If you ask the maesters, "Dragonglass" has nothing to do with dragons at all, it's merely volcanic glass.

“Obsidian. Forged in the fires of the gods, far below the earth. The children of the forest hunted with that, thousands of years ago. The children worked no metal . . . In place of swords, they carried blades of obsidian.”

Anyhoo, it's getting too heavy in here. I may have touched on the age difference between "books" Missandei and TV Missandei before.... well, let's be grateful Dan & Dave decided they wanted "the little scribe" to be less little.

She certainly affected my Worm, but he's pink, not Grey.

He lived for that confession. He died hearing the truth from his mouth...after burying a spear into his body.

Maybe. But Tyrion's got out bad situations before. His brother is still on his side and King's Landing is full of people with questionable allegiances.

Why do you assume that? We've never seen a White Walker or a Wight south of The Wall. If Wildlings can make it past The Wall, then White Walkers should be able to as well. But they haven't.

There might be more to The Wall than just stone and ice.

As far as dragons being able to survive in the cold, that's a good questions. We know that dragons have made it to Harrenhal, but that's in the reiverlands below The Neck. I don't think there's ever been any mention of dragons flying north of that.

Old Nan told stories of Ice Dragons, but we have no idea if those stories were just old fairy tales.

I just figured that's why they built the wall in the first place, to stop the "Others" from walking South.

But you're right, there could be more to it than that. I really have no idea.

It's all painfully speculative & academic anyway, as there is hardly any possibility the Walkers & Dragons will ever meet. I started out wondering whether it was a certainty the dragons would just vaporize the Walkers (or if there could be some kind of level playing field for them somehow or somewhere), and it turned into a lot of what-iffing. Probably better just to let it go. I doubt this will lead anywhere.

This isn't really a spoiler, but in the book, the entrance that Brann, Hodor and the Reeds took to pass through The Wall had much more "magical" properties. It showed that The Wall was built with magic and spells woven into it. I don't know why they cut that from the show. Maybe the show will abandon the theme all together.

So far, the only known weaknesses that the White Walkers have is dragonglass (obsidian) and dragonsteel (which many think is Valyrian steel.) Regular fire doesn't seem to hurt them the way it destroys the wights (zombies), but maybe fire from a dragon's breath is a different story.

It'll be interesting to what impact (if any) the dragons have.

For my final post at freeones I have to say great body. Have a good one folks, BCT is out.

The Imp is innocent. Let the dwarf go!!!

Half-Man. Half-Man. Half-Man! Half-Man!!! Half-Man!!! Half-Man!!!! Half-MAN!!!!! Half-MAN!!!!! Half-MAN!!!!!!!! HALF-MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!! HALF-MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HALF-MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So........ who will rule The Vale, and by proxy, the East, and also by proxy, command their army into battle, now, should they ever go into battle?

OH YEAH : LITTLEFINGER.

I'd like to add the talent displayed by the show's directors. This episode has a scene with Baelish and a couple Lords of the Vale approaching a staircase. In the course of the stairs' descent and the conversation taking place, Baelish takes the lead in both. Pretty brilliant, imo.

How I choose to remember last episode's ending:

They then go on being the hottest swingers in Westeros. Yeah baby!

<sigh> Can we at least get some naked Ellaria Sand in the next couple of episodes as a consolation?

Who am I kidding? I'm not going to quit watching the show, but the next time a really cool character is introduced and especially if that person has an inspirational scene the week before, I'm just going to fully expect that person to die a gruesome death. That way I won't feel like I've been punched in the gut again.

And I'm with Grey Worm, I'm glad I saw her too.

There was Ros, Talisa, Doreah, there's Melisandre, Shae, Ellaria Sand (my favorite), and yes, even Danaerys.

Of all the babes of GoT, Missandei ^ is the most beautiful IMO. Now that I've come out and said that, I'm looking forward to her dying in some horrible fashion next episode.

Jorah made reference in the first series to Aegon Targaryen conquering six of the seven kingdoms not because they were his right, but because he could. Because he had dragons. Six kingdoms which includes The North. Ironically the only kingdom he couldn't conquer was Dorne - the southernmost and hottest kingdom of all.

Fun fact you might not have heard - the family Baratheon started as a bastard branch of Targaryens.

It's all painfully speculative & academic anyway, as there is hardly any possibility the Walkers & Dragons will ever meet. The "A Song Of Ice And Fire" series not ending with the ultimate collision of the two would be the biggest anti-climax since... ooooooohhhhh..... let's go with the last episode of Lost, that pissed a few people off I hear.

Fun correlation you may not have noticed :
1st series : Ended with Dany emerging from Drogo's funeral pyre. (FIRE)
2nd series : Ended with visual of Sam cowering amidst the Walkers marching towards the Wall. (ICE)
3rd series : Ended with Dany ("Mhysa") and dragons outside Yunkai. (FIRE)

So, I stake my reputation on this series ending with a shot of something around or north of The Wall.

"But Mr S, you haven't got a reputation."

No, but I'm hoping to acquire one from this escapade.

GREAT attention to detail. Dan & Dave for writing it, and you for noticing it.

In the book, Missandei was only 10.
In the book, there came a point where Dany when getting sexually frustrated, she would let Irri sort her out.

In the show, Missandei is a lot older, and Irri is dead. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

And yeah.... TEH HAWT. She isn't my type at all, but she's so lovely that I forget that and just dribble.
