The historic Old Masonic Hall in Bangor, Maine, caught fire and became encased in ice six to 10 inches thick as water from firefighters' hoses froze instantly in temperatures of minus 14.
Mist from the spray accumulated in three-foot drifts around the base of building, which was in danger of collapsing under the weight of the ice, said Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bostock.
