I wouldn't say I'm he's most hugheist fanatic, although I do enjoy his style and Danny Elfman-scored overly mainstream films, from time-to-time every year.
I personally really feel he's best work is the modern mini classic Batman ('89 version of course, and his work for me is forever the definitive 35mm version of the Batman character on film; Schumaucher's was too overly comedic and a bit too HomoErotic for me, and there is a general lack of a real sense of fun and maybe not enough dark broading even in the mostly well done new ones from the guy who did Momento, Chris Nolen). I know many don't look at Batman '89 as fondly as we all did as kdis seeing it on opening weekend, but for me it's honestly age'd well. There is no other Batman, for me money, besides the oddly fitting Michael Keaton. It was all down-hill from him. Sorry, just my opinion.
And then of course I also enjoy Batman Returns (1992), Big Fish is rather underrated and a wonderful modern fairly tale after what I felt was a string of I'm-afraid-I-just-can't-get-into-these-more-muddled-films of his (Mars Attacks? The mostly sleep-inducing Sleepy Hollow? Planet of the Apes? Sorry, you can all keep those). So I really love Big Fish as well.
Ed Wood is also a little mini classic and a fine bio-pic as well. Very underrated.
By the way, for the record, I choose the twin current power-house of his Batman's. Inparticular, the orignial. I'm very glad to see that it's still somewhat very popular, dispite a lot of Bat-purists having some obvious issues with it.
