welcome back. i now know that geocaching is a fancy name for gps treasure hunting which is something that has stewed in my mind for a very long time as a fantasy. ive always wondered if it existed, and it does, which means i cant reap the rewards of inventing it. foiled again.

game day for me is friday. i have a lot of work to do on figuring out how to run that social encounter. taking all suggestions.

im also gonna have a huge rumble. a whole tribe of vistani (think gypsies) against the players as they try and take on the leader who has recently been discovered to be the last of the three fanes to destroy. i can see the map and thats the easy part, i guess ill make a shit ton of minions to whack through and then some more skilled fighters in the mix.

I always thought social encounters were easier since there is seldom any complex math involved and it's much easier to just wing it if it comes to that.

I would suggest that anybody that you may have to play the part of you get their personalities down and try to guess what each one of their reactions would be to a lot of the situations the players might put on them. It's almost roleplaying in it's purest forms like an actor would do when you try to put yourselves in the shoes of the person you are speaking for. Still fleshing a few things out about how they might respond to things in your mind before hand will make it seem more organic.

Whether or not you have challenges for them that are outside of combat I would also try to have things that are available to them that they can pull off with skills or or talents they might have. That might mean a smooth talking character can ring out a little bit of information from the people at a gathering than normal, a tough looking character can make some suspicious looking person think twice before pulling something on the group just by that characters air of intimidation, an observant person noticing the more complex interactions of the people around them, others at the party paying attention to the group more than they are trying to let on, or the more secretive things going on at the fringes the event's main attention, or maybe just somebody that's good at haggling getting a few nights rent cheap from a local inn owner he meet at the event.

Also smart players will do things like look for escape paths if things go down hill and maybe even arrange for an emergency distraction for the group if they are able to pull it off.

Here's something Petra might like that I found although she might already know about it. Dreamland Toyworks has come out with more Cthulhu toys as can be seen here http://dreamlandtoyworks.com/ with there Mythos Buddies 2 line. Is it scary that they can all be cute and horrible at the same time? :1orglaugh

I drool over those badboys whenever I go to the game store.

thanks. the games in a few hours, i've picked some brains on their priority and they are going to go after the final hag before the party. ive been keeping the time of day to help out that aspect of the reality and they should be able to pull it off before the party.

so, i have another week to figure out the whole party thing. i want it to be really huge.

i think im gonna close tonights game with a black unmanned horse and carriage pulling up for them to pick them up from the aftermath of the battle tonight. a note will be attached somewhere letting them know that their old buddy strahd sent it for them. no time to get dressed up i guess. that can be sorta funny.

tomorrow's the big day. i might want to stand up if im going to pull a game out of my ass.

the party takes place tomorrow. it will be the first meeting between the PCs and the mysterious villain, count strahd. ive picked a public event held in their honour hosted by the villain to make things interesting.

im gonna make a list of the NPCs ive had them encounter so far and have them attending.

the big question is, do i provoke a fight? and the other one is, will they provoke a fight?

if they do, they will have their asses handed to them. it would be a nice way of seeing how strong their ultimate opponent is. they have also made it to level 6.

In cases where I know a situation like this would result in character death or grave bodily harm, I like trying to provoke them. Of course, I have two players with common sense which is kind of like a early warning system that what they're about to do isn't such a bright idea. Of course, if they walk away I don't keep on trying to get them with that situation.

Of course, my players are on the look out of these type of things. What really sucks is when I put something in that they know they have to react to because it's within the scope of the character. :angel1:

I don't know if Strahd would really be the type of person to provoke them, at least in that situation. It wold have to be pretty subtle. If the characters are going to have a grave made for them you might as well let them be the ones doing the digging it for themselves it comes to it. I think it would also take away from the whole social aspect of the event.

heh, yeah, i have a very gulliable player who rushes into things without thinking, it could prove to be her undoing. in fact, im hoping it is. shes the one begging me to be a vampire now that i presented it to her a few weeks ago. i might just let it happen in the open. lets see if the other PCs can let her be on their side after she's been "infected."

if not, (or either way) i might have a rare potion fall into their hands which helps her control her new "urges."

yeah, you're right. strahd is old, wise, and very patient. he wont make a move, but thats not to say some lackey wont. good thinking.

If Strahd did anything I think it would be more along the lines of a "he knows, the characters know, and you both know the other party knows but both pretend not to" kind of way but the vast majority of other people there don't know what's going on. I could see him being sly and very covertly toying with them or maybe giving them this one and only time to very subtly send a message. Besides faux politeness I can see Strahd having an air of absolute confidence, well, because he's Strahd and he probably knows he can wipe the floor with them if he wants. At least at that point he wouldn't need to do anything, and if he did it would be somewhere else.

It also has the added benefit of Strahd being able to pretend to take the high road in front of everybody else if things turn sour. The characters would then be looked down upon by more people for instigating events. They might inexplicably be thought of at the "bad guys". Like I said above I think it would also take away from the whole social aspect of the event if a fight broke out, even if the whole thing has a strong under town of eeriness.

very good. this is all circling my head. thanks.

It doesn't have to be Strahd that does the provoking...there's minions to do that. ;-)

its true. we have no fun. ever.

What? Editing a few thousand link descriptions a day isn't fun?

Well, last night was another Vampire Diaster. The PC which pretty much keeps the group from procrastinating was absent so the group spent most of their time trying to get up a cliff.

See, this is a Tremere Chronicle and the Tremere were mages at one point. They built this super secure fortress on the top of a mountain. You can only come up from one side (or so it appears) and the other side is a canyon with a sheer cliff at the back of the fortress with a fast flowing river at the bottom. It's very hard to climb except in 1 exact area which leads down to a secret entrance into the chantry.

Well, the game before this they spent the entire game trying to get down...they did so eventually.

One of the players is basically able to turn himself into this 8ft tall super strong monstrosity. He figured fuck this shit with using the rope (which is about 50ft above them, the others had to climb the cliff a bit before getting to the rope) and just climbed by sticking his fists into the cliff as he climbed. Kind of like climbing spikes. However, this destablized the cliff face and after he got to the top it crumbled. Now the incredibly hard to climb cliff face that the Tremere spend time magically putting into place is climbable...

To make matters worse, once they got to the top, they were spotted by the ass kicking demon hunting nuns that none of their powers work on due to the true faith of the nuns. So they all run (in opposite directions). The player who is the 8ft tall monstrosity runs back to the cliff edge (this is who the nuns were after anyways since he looks like the "demons" that are attacking the fortress) and belly flops into the river.

He then climbs the cliff again, in much the same way (but a little down from where the damage originally was done) and he gets to the top and the cliff face crumbles.

One of the PC's smacks his forhead and says, "Tremere really isn't going to like this." I'm looking forward to their next meeting with the head honcho.

Anyways, the 8ft monstrosity heads to where he figures everyone is meeting up and one of the nuns is in hiding and jumps him. The PC kills her horse by making a pool of lava appear under it but the nun vaults off the horse (so now they have ass kicking ninja demon hunting nuns - someone is calling them nunjas now ) and covers an arrow tip with holy water and goes to shoot it at the "demon". The PC tries shattering the nun's bow, but botches. Well, his spell succeeded but it also shattered the hand he used to cast the spell. At that point the PC had enough and opened a pool of lava under her. However, she did get her holy water covered dagger thrown at him before sinking into the lava...all in all the PC is now without a hand and has some agg damage from the holy water.

He gets back to town, handless, and the group starts poking around to try to accomplish their latest mission. To figure out where the humans have gone (this village is basically the fortress of vampire's pantry). The PC finds a corpse, cuts off it's hand, and reattaches it to his own stump (long live flesh craft) while another player decides to do something called "spirit touching" the corpse. This is basically a brand new toy he just purchased last game and has been dying to spirit touch something.

Well, the PC successfully spirit touches it and passes out from what she saw...once awake again, she relays the information and the PC who is of the same clan that took the humans declairs he rather go after teh ass kicking demon hunting nuns.

So....2 weeks. We shall see what ends up happening.

8 foot monstrosity.. wow. and it sure would be fun to just re-attach limbs. didnt anders do that?

also, i thank you all for helping with the social gathering. the party (though still going) has gone spectacular. our old player has decided to join in and it was the PERFECT time for a new player to join. and man, what a great roleplayer! he's the experienced one in the group, lots of rpgs under his belt.

anyway, strahd was patient, planned out, kind, and put on the mask of a great and caring philanthropist to the citizens at the party. thanking the heros for their deeds, and even promising the town 10,000 gold from his own personal estate for rebuilding. he closed with telling the people, "..Let us now show these fine heros that their deeds are now done, and if they so choose to leave, they may do so with a full sense of accomplishment. We thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. To our heros! And to the rebuilding of Barovia!"

so, the PCs got a hint from the big man to GTFO. this is gonna be great.

Screw you Squally.... I was very helpful this session. I felt a little dirty about it to be honest.

Also, Petra gave a new toy.... I can turn in to a speck of light, and its fabulous! Gay pun intended.
