i got my parent's minis.

i also got my younger sister a chess set to help her learn tactics before she becomes a d&d player and earns her mini.

An encounter on a chess board where the players can only move like the type of chess piece they 'take over' is loads of fun.

my erm "custom" dice. I just purchased 2 new oblivion red sets. 1 set was the crystal. I brought them to try them, as none of our group has gotten them yet, so they are cool except the d20 needs a really flat surface to get a fair result. Hence why I have a huge d20, for when people call bull on rolls. I want to get some hybrid dice (ie d2, d5) but its not worth it just right now.

The barrel dice are cool looking and great conversation pieces (I have lots of totally useless dice I've collected over the years but are there just to talk about. LOL) but are crap to actually play with.

how many sides does it have? oh, it looks like they are all different.

i still like the classic ones better, though. ;)

I always liked the way the barrel dice roll, but never liked the way they were harder to read at a distance.

BTW...while on the subject of reading the numbers on a dice one of my big criteria for getting dice anymore is high contrast between the color of the dice and the numbers. For example, I have some dark dice with golden numbers and depending on lighting conditions or how far it bounces away it can be a pain trying to see what they comes up as.

thats why i love my original set.

classic and sleek. and easy to see that 20 from across the table.

Hmmm...I think I have a set very similar to that.

That's one of the problems I have with those pound of dice deals. A lot of the times I think they put dice they screw up on and their is poor contrast with the numbers.

im wary of those pound of dice deals. i mean, i wanna get some but some of those dice are so uggy sometimes. one day, perhaps. but yeah, i still like my white on black. those are the dice i got with my my first d&d set, the redbox re-release for 4e.

I didn't get them in any 4th edition stuff. If I had to guess they are probably a set of dice that has been produced for a long time because of it's simplicity and utility. I don't know if you are missing the "tens" d10 dice or they didn't give you one, but if I remember correctly when I bought the set it didn't come with one.

I'm not sure, but those dice, or at least something extremely close to them, might be the first full set of dice I bought wayyyyy back in the day at a brick and mortar game shop. (way back when one was still by me) I'm not sure if my first set was something like that or a set of smoky translucent dice. I still have both of them though.

Amazingly as far as I know I have never lost any dice I have bought.

I have strayed away from the classic black/white dice, but late-night/early morning gaming sessions witht the weary eyes make you realize funky cubes are nice but you want to be able to see what you rolled.

Still I like to go to the fantasy shop and just buy another set that just looks awesome.

Because you all know, for the creation of the awesomest characters you need awesome cubes ;)

brick and mortar! hehe i have a d10, they gave me everything but the percentile (which ive never needed yet). in fact, i roll a d10 for my greatsword.

I remember when it was hard for me to get a hold of a percentile dice and I had to use two different colored ten sided dice from different sets to generate a d100 roll.

hell, i dont even know what you do with those things. my girl has one she got in her chessex set.

You can re-colour dice with a crayon, rub the wax into the pip and remove excess wax off the dice with a scrubbing pad. 95% of the wax will remain in the pip, and you can just add more wax to get 100% effect. The wax should last several years in that pip (an alternative is to paint the pip and remove excess paint with a rag) I did this with all my dice as you can see to make a high contrast so I can read the numbers.

The barrel dice ( i like that name but never heard it ) called crystal dice, go up to d20. But the d20 as pointed out is pretty horrid to read as you cannot quickly tell what actual number its rolled onto, and if you do use it, then its best on a hard surface, not like a felt rolling mat that I like to use. Buuuut the rest of the crystal dice, d4, d6, d8, d10 and d12 are awesome to roll and read. Its really just the d20 thats a disapointment.

We were playing a game at the pub which is a wotc published in-game this evening.
Start by rolling a d4, then the next player has to match or better that roll on a d6, the next player has to match or better that roll (if it was higher that the first) on a d8, " " d10, " " d12, " " d2o.

If you fail to make a roll succeed then you get a strike (three and your out) and you start the round again as you lost, you have more of a chance winning if you start.

Once on the d20 you keep rolling the d20 till you lose of hit 20.

There are variations depending how you want to play. Good fun tho for people who like the dice, but dont want to roleplay.

and yeah there is such a thing as having too many dice. You basically want dice that are clear to read, and it all comes down to you dont waste time whilst other players are waiting for their turn. I also love black and white dice sets.
