Agreed!!!
I think it really depends on the car.... I mean, if you're talking about a classically elegant and refined British Rover, definitely automatic, but if you have a German or Italian roadster...it's tantamount to treason if it's not standard.

You're assuming that there are options (if buying new)!

More and more of the true sports car assemblers are pushing to have one version only - typically a man-u-matic, ala Tiptronic. The costs are becoming too great to offer so many versions of one car. It's trickle down and crawl up. The econo boxes are typically only 5 speed manual...

If you look at real world numbers, man-u-matics and manuals are almost equal in practically all performance aspects. Even track times are faster for man-u-mats when the driver's are too. (F1 has been man-u-matic for what, a decade?) However, I know for a fact, that few drivers can compete with the accuracy and speed of man-u-matics. In fact, one Italian assembler had to slow down the shift times of it's road cars because customers complained that they could feel the shift....

If given a choice of auto, manual or man-u-matic, I'd go man-u-matic. Based on European traffic alone... and my quads get enough work out in the gym. :D

Oh, and BTW - This coming from someone who believes that the only real Ferraris are front engine and 12 cylinders.....

My car's a piece of crap. BUT it's still fun to drive just because of the 5-speed.
Even a Lada would be fun with a floor shifter (well, ok, maybe that's pushing it too far).

Legzman

what the fuck you lookin at?
Currently, no car, but I'll be getting one in the next couple weeks and sadly it's an automatic. I much prefer stick as it's way more fun to drive, better on gas too!

knows petras secret: she farted.
i love 5 speeds. 6 is even better (though ive never driven one)

i have a 5 speed manual, i love it. it took me a couple of days to figure out the gas/clutch ratio but ill never go back. reason: i like the control aspect. more control over the power and output of the car. you also can get better gas milage.

Squallumz: I like the control aspect too - especially on icy roads :)

If y'all think driving a manual car is a bitch - try driving a 60-ton tank!

cheers,

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
I shift gears all day...I can do without on my time...plus Wifey can't drive a stick.

whatever gets me from point a to point b is fine. but fun wise, i go with the 5 speed. preferably american muscle. not sure if japanese and european cars have 5 speed. ive always heard they were 4 speed. probably wrong.

Most German cars offer a 6 Speed manual and allot Japanese 5 or 6 speed. The American car company are starting to offer them more often as well.

Most of the Auto's these days are 5 to 8 speed. 4 Speed Auto's are becoming dinosaurs in newer cars, unless you drive a truck or SUV.

Really don't matter to me, I have 3 trucks, GMC 4x4 W/8'SnowPlow 400V8 w/Turbo 400 3speed Auto. Ford F-350 CC Dually 2wheel, 460V8, 3speed Auto. GMC 3500HD CC Dually 4x4, 6.6 Dura-Max LLY Diesel W/5speed Allison Auto. Trailblazer 4x4, 4speed Auto. Kenworth T-2000 W/Condo, 12speed Auto. Fun Car- 71 Camaro LS-7 Internal Balanced 454, W/Turbo 400 Manual Valve Body & Reverse Pattern, ET 8.56 @ 176MPH. Fun Time!! Would Love To Run It On The Street, 1 mile I'd be happy!!!! I'd burn them Goodyear Eagles right off!!!
P.S. My Girlfriend can move the Kenworth around, NO PROBLEM, but if I put her in the Dually's, she wants to tear off the rear fenders, going thru the drive-thru's!!!
P.S.S. FOR A REAL CHALLENGE, TRY A 3 STICK MACK TRUCK!!! Then your a "Gear Jammer"!!!

*Sigh*

All these posts about gears is makin' me miss my Challenger and 'cuda ...

word!
Technically, I would REALLY know - as I've never driven one [Infantry].

But I've been around tanks long enough to know that maintainace is a real cast iron bitch - and something that is that hard to maintain cannot possibily be easy to drive. Besides, it's frigging strange driving around viewing through prisims, posts and plexiglass :hammer:

cheers,

Yes, those were some sweet cars!

Heh. Never owned the 'Cuda for too long. Had to give up my Challenger when The Little Woman informed me we were going to have to get a car that people actually survived crashes in, because we were going to have a passenger (Yes, she said that).

So I traded my red and black striped Challenger for my precious daughter.

Always a pleasure to meet an older gnetleman on the website. Us old farts have to stick together :glugglug:

cheers,
Roy

I know what you mean, that's been the trend for years.
I always had 5 speed usually hydraulic, but my current car is spring loaded clutch, and a lot more annoying in heavy traffic.

Next one is Automatic. I might move up to a 1985 or 86 year. :jester:

I ride a 2006 Honda Civic Auto. but am thinkin of getting the SI Manual... I was going to get it at first but when I bought my Civic the Si was not out yet.... I am also thinking on waiting for the 2008 Si which is going to be even more diff. as honda is not making the s2000 anymore and focusing all its racing abilities on the Si (Just thought civic killer would like this info)
