Computer Problem, please help me

The problem is my internet connection. My Modem has the four yellow light on it that are supposed to be lit up all the time and the one orange one below them that is blinking. Often, the yellow lights will disappear and the top one will stay solid and the second one down will start blinking. I always have to Wait for all of the lights to come back on. Sometimes it will last for 2 seconds, or 3 minutes, or 30 minutes or up to 2 days.

I have replaced the power source and the other two cables, thinking that would do it and it did not do anything. I thought it might have something to do with the cable to the TV being plugged into a splitter, but it was not that. I even phoned techies.

The techies just tell me to unplug everything and Wait 30 minutes and then plug it all back in and everything will be working fine. But it never does. They replace my modem, but that did nothing at all.

The funny thing was that my modem worked fine when I was living in another city, but as soon as I moved into my new apt. in a new city I have been having these stupid connection problems.

I can even still be able to use my messenger but have no internet connection LOL

I wonder if this has anything to do with my firewall or proxy settings?

I hope you guys/gals can help me with this

How many TVs do you have on the cable line. My cable guy said there was not enough signal reaching the modem because there were 3 TVs using the same line. I had to get a seperate cable line just for the modem. It helped. Also how far down the cable line are you. If the same cable line is feeding a bunch of apts., the signal may be weak when its get to you. Have a cable line directly from the pole to you computer.

Which lights are blinking on you modem is not really that much help. You're using a WAN-type connection through cable TV wires, correct (generally, if you don't have to dial up, you're on a WAN)? Are you using any other hardware such as firewalls, hubs and so on? Wireless network?

I just have one TV. I think you may be right when you say that there may not be enough signal reaching my computer. I unplugged my TV from the spliter and have had internet connection all day

This I dont know. I would think in the middle somewhere, because I am on the second floor

Don't quote me on this, but I am fairly positive that I would be connected through a WAN.

How would I know if I was using a firewall or a hub?

If you are running windows xp. Go to the start menue, control panel, security center. In there will be firewall, automatic updates, and virus protection. I had a simular problem with my internet. I was using steel internet security for gamers and it made my internet quit working. I would have to uninstall and then reinstall to make the problem go away.

they are all working (on) just fine, I don't think those are the problems.

off topic, but if you are using windows protection, you will get into trouble.:)

Huh, come again?
I think he says "Don't use Windows Firewall".

cheers,

PS: Sorry about your computer troubles. Sorry, I can't be of much help - my son understands this stuff more than I do ... hell, I still do some of my typing on my old typewriter. :dunno:

Are there any other boxes than your modem? If so, that's probably a hub and many have built-in firewalls. I'm going to take a stab in the dark here and guess that you probably don't have one of those since you didn't know if you did.

If there is no hardware in the way and you've already had your modem and cables replaced, there are a few alternatives. One is that your building simply has a bad connection or wiring, either because others are using up all the bandwidth or because the signal is not getting through like it should. Ask other people in the building if they are also having problems. If not, it's probably a software error (or possibly something wrong with your ISP, though that shouldn't be a problem for very long).

Diagnosing software problems over the Internet with virtually no information is pure hell, so there's not much I can help you with there. Disable any and all software firewalls You Might have and contant your ISP and ask about what settings you have to use (proxy servers, dynamic/static IPs, etc.).

I think the problem has to do with not getting enough of the connection to my modem. Unhooking it from the splitter helped a lot.

But now i need to figure out how I can hook up my TV to the signal. The splitter was the only place that I can hook it up to:(

thanx for all the help, greatly appreciated:thumbsup:

Any more will be welcomed as well:helpme:

I have cable internet service and had the exact problem about a months ago

and I got the same answer when I call the tekies for tech support (unplug and wait).

I finally complained enough and they sent me another modem.

When I got the new modem I was back to the connection speeds I was used to.

The best part was that since the modem did not belong to me (It's part of my plan) it was a free replacement.

It just maybe time to get a new one :2 cents:

I did get a new modem as soon as I moved into my new apartment, because the old one was from a different city and did not work where I moved to.

I don't know what else to suggest other than,

I would call the tech guys and make sure that the modem is programmed correctly.

They can do this via the cable line using the MAC numbers located on the modem.

OK, Guys and Gals, Now I really need your help, I am desperate for your help LOL

Today I spend a few hours making a Powerpoint Presentation for a school project, complete with music and all. Then all of a sudden my a message popped up that said "computer low on virtual memory"
What the heck does that mean? I am no longer able to access the slide show in powerpoint to edit it. The only way I can view it is with Powerpoint Viewer.
I wonder if this is because I made my slide show to big? I wouldn't think it had to do with that though?

I am off to seek help from the internet now

any help greatly appreciated:hatsoff:

"computer low on virtual memory" It sounds like you do not have much free disk space. Run clean up and delete some programs you do not use. Virtual memory uses your hard disk as memory.
