Classic rock blows. Do you agree?

I'm not much for the 1960s but am a big fan of Black Sabbath and the different mood of the 1970s. You can have your political correctness and I'll keep the gritty 70s. Music and Movies too.

Basically what i've been taught is "classic", aside from the two artists i mentioned, is Lynyrd Skynyrd(garbage), ZZ Top(no), the Rolling Stones who i actually don't particularly mind, ACDC, who I actually think made some of the worst music of all time, etc. Anything in that area is awful.
Granted a person likes what a person likes. There are 2 things in your statement that interests me. One is besides Skynyrd, the other bands you dislike have a Blues influence to them. The other is when you say you were "taught" . Would you care to expound on this?

i hate the radio. but to say bands suck when you have only heard maybe 5 of the songs they recorded out of lets say 200 songs which is a low ball number. i personally dislike acdc a lot but i can't say they suck.

classic rock bands that slay and most likely influenced some band you do like in some way:

Creedence clearwater revival
thin lizzy
neil young (god)
blue cheer
elo
mountain
some but not all YES albums
the god fathers of all things heavy BLACK SABBATH
MC5
this list could go on and on.

It's a thread about my musical preferences. if it turns into a war over me not liking the "Sweet Home Alabama" band, I quit.

So basically, you started a thread to tell everyone you think your music is the only good music, and other peoples music is garbage, and if anyone strongly disagrees with you, you'll bail?

I've seen a list of bands you consider good...I've never heard of them, but if their still around in 40 years, like The Who is, or have an album in the Billboards top 200 for TEN YEARS, like Pink Floyd did, maybe...just maybe, that wouldn't come across sounding down right bitchy.

I didn't mean the thread, i meant in general.

However, I have a problem with your last statement. I don't think being a band for 40 years means shit in regards to quality. It's one thing if you mean that people will still be talking about them in 40 years, but to argue that the fact they're still making music is why they're good doesn't really make sense. I mean, There are plenty of bands now who've been making music for 20 years and are downright awful.

Apparently it does...no one is still talking about the one shot wonders. None of them are STILL generating revenue this many years later. None of them have likely influenced a generation of musicians. To say the longevity of a band means nothing, is utterly ridicules. You really have no idea just how many kids have picked up a guitar, because of Jimi Hendrix, or Jimmy Page, then went on to become a member of a "hair band", that is actually considered classic rock now a days...which means I'm really getting old, but you just don't seem to get it. You might not like it...fine, don't listen to it. But without it, your bands would not only NOT exist, they would have no idea how to proceed, or in what direction to proceed in. Just like all of the classic rockers would never have existed, without blues, or Les Paul inventing just about EVERYTHING that makes modern music possible.

The Who - Baba O'Riley

One of the best songs ever in any genre.

If an alien spaceship showed up in our orbit and demanded a really good song as a tribute or they would vaporize the earth I'd have to send up a copy of Baba O'Riley in the space shuttle, err, soyuz rocket, along with some cooties just in case.

One thing I've known all my life is that a band's best music rarely finds its way onto the radio. ZZ Top definitely suffers from this syndrome, Skynyrd probably has for the last 20 years. You mentioned Sweet Home Alabama. I always agreed with their original assessment that it's a B-side single and nothing more. But the original lineup produced some great songs that you probably have never heard. AC/DC? Well, I'm not going to try yo make you like them, but check out the body of Bon Scott's work, you might change your mind.

When I think of true classic rock I think of:
Deep Purple
Montrose
Led Zeppelin
Jimi Hendrix
Janis Joplin
Mamas and Papas
The Doors
Humble Pie
Derek and the Dominos
Cream
Grateful Dead (check out the Keith and Donna years)
The Yardbirds
The Guess Who (If music was still on vinyl, I'd have worn out 10+ Guess Who albums by now)
....and that era of music.

Metallica (sux), Chili Peppers (I like), Pearl Jam, Soundgarden are not classic rock by my definition.

Don't worry, Jaana. There ain't a soul this side of the Mason-Dixon line who is going to give a rat's ass that some 22 yo chick from Finland thinks Skynyrd is "garbage". :1orglaugh Music is all about individual tastes and for everyone who thinks what you do, there are 10,000 Skynyrd fans who would disagree. As Stevie Winwood would say, "Do what you like". However, don't get thin-skinned if someone gets in your face about it. The thread is not necessarily about "your musical preferences"....it's actually about you asking whether others agree or not.

ZZ Top was way better before Eliminator and the MTV days. The MTV stuff was fun but the older material rocked and was way more bluesy. The 1980 Rockpalast Show is on DVD on Double Down. Billy Gibbons is a madman.

Thou speakest the truth. Eliminator actually ruined them for a lot of people.

And to my above list, I failed to mention the great Alvin Lee and Ten Years After. It's morning and yesterday sucked for me. I will now slice of my left testicle with a sardine can lid to pay my penance for such a grievous omission.
