Classic rock blows. Do you agree?

Racing is life... anything else is just waiting.
Bob, I wanted so badly to rep you for that great explanation! But it looks like the system thinks I should spread rep around more. Thanks for that. See, who says you can't learn stuff on a porn board?!

I can't stand 99% of "classic" rock. It's overplayed, over-rated, and just plain awful. There are a few bands I don't hate, like Queen and Bob Dylan, but almost everyone else just annoys the crap out of me.

It doesn't blow.

Apparently it isn't your cup of tea.

Here's another little fun radio fact. Ever wonder how much work goes into the talking subjects the DJs have prepared every morning? NOTHING! It's a service they subscribe to. Every morning a list of fun and topical subjects are received at the station by 4 AM. There is background information and links provided. With each story some funny commentary and joke lines are given. That's why you hear the same topics of radio conversation on many stations on the same day, day after day after day.

I cant stand 99% of music period. That said, classic rock is overrated for the most part. I do like some bands (Sabbath, Motorhead, Priest, ZZ Top, Thin Lizzy, Dire Straits), but I still don't actively listen to them (except Motorhead, which is too fucking awesome not to).

 That was my instant reaction as well.

I do think most "classic rock" stations have ridiculously narrow playlists. I mean, Lynyrd Skynyrd was all about a helluva lot more than just "Freebird" and "Gimme Three Steps" but it seems like that's about all you ever hear. Where's "Mississippi Kid" and "Ballad of Curtis Lowe"? You never hear them. So, for that reason, I usually avoid "classic rock" stations.

Sorry for my epic post ... just hear me out, ok? :)

I'm so glad the people here brought up the issue of hit/shit single litany. One reason I can think of for that is because, well, the companies don't want to leak more than a few songs from an artist/album through the radio. You like the songs? Get the whole fucking album!

It seems to me that the intentions for the radio on the part of the companies and on the part of the listeners are dramatically different. The companies want to sell music, so they are fishing for potential buyers (most likely little kids ... who wasn't introduced to classic rock as a kid?) who have not heard this kind of music before or are just annoyed with hearing just these few songs, so they might as well get the whole album. I presume the suit-types know about the issue of the stuff being "overplayed" on the radio, but I don't think they seem to care. We as listeners have unconsciously become victims of this airplay "mistreatment". Or is it just because we don't know how (or, better yet, when) to listen to the radio? When you press the "power on" button, you should realize that you've made a choice of listening to the same shit over and over again.

If excessive airplay is not the only issue (since the thread title is rather very general about the main issue here), then maybe you are listening to the wrong songs? There was a time when I used to be into catchy stuff. Today I demand more from music than the "catch", the hooks. Maybe it's (I'll put it in Wiki's terms) "intellectual depth" or "technical command" that turns me on about music, but it's the "artistic beauty" that attracts me the most about music that I personally consider good (and, if anybody must know, my tastes in music are wildly unpopular).

Again, like I said, maybe you are listening to the wrong classic rock songs? Or maybe it's time to listen to other ones. Time for fresh meet, then! Get whole albums by guys like Jethro Tull (respect to ye who mentioned them :D ... go with the album Aqualung), Heart (check out all of Dreamboat Annie), Yes (start with Fragile), Pink Floyd (I know some people claim that you have to listen to The Dark Side of the Moon as a whole album, track by track, for that "singular experience"), and that's only a cherry on top of a large cake.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is this: you as a listener have to make an effort of breaking out of that radio zombie mold and getting some fresh quality RnR, whether it's popular/famous/mainstream/whatever or not. Sometimes using the right speakers (or even better, headphones! :) ) can really do the trick. When you listen to the music "right", it's a whole new experience. :)

Again, sorry for the epic post.

That could also be true. Just like I don't like Bob Dylan's voice and his songwriting techniques. Blah-h! My mother has no respect for RnR whatsoever.

Or we can use this man explanation (I was too lazy to scratch through 8-9 pages of this).

Music is intellectual property. The artist and the composer are both entitled to a fee for the use of their work. Rather than each radio station pay artists direct fees there are organizations that do it for them. ASCAP and BMI are 2 such organizations that do this. Artists, composers, and radio stations become members. The stations must keep a play list of everything that goes over the air. The organizations collect X number of dollars per month and distribute it to the artists and composers. A program director will make his life a little easier if he creates a set play list and rotation. This way at the end of the month he knows what the list will be to send over for billing. If he didn't do this and let the DJs play what they wanted, he would have to keep track of hundred of songs with every DJ changing their line up.

On another note, Ford may want to use a particular song for one of their commercials. They approach an artist and get the licensing directly from them. Also, if any band wants to perform a cut on stage as a cover, they must pay the composer a fee for his rights to the song. It is paid for each time the band performs the song.

This is why Christmas collections are done by every artist. The money they rack up every year can go on forever.

Who says that my broadcasting degree was totally fucking useless. I finally have gotten a chance to use it after all of these years.

Not everyone has the same ears or enthusiasm for music. I have a sister that loves music and one that couldn't care less about it. One brother that was into doo-wop in high school even though though the songs came out decades before. Another brother that will listen to the shit on the radio that gives the traffic and weather. If you have any enthusiasm for music you will start reaching back for stuff You Missed. You may like a song and find out that it is a cover then go find the original. After your first 5 or 6 times of hearing covers you will do your own searches of these artists.

I saw the bands that Jaana likes listed on her website. Of course she thinks classic rock blows.

I like all types of music except except country. (Although I have great deal of respect for country musicians like Brad Paisley and Brent Mason).

I spent my college years as a guitarist for a heavy metal/hair band but somehow gained an appreciation for other genres. Back in the late 80's I was listening to Radiohead when nobody in my circles even knew who they were. I was on a Sigur Ros kick about 7 years ago and the Alabama Shakes are now a favorite of mine.

Nothing puts me in a good mood like listening to Jazz artists like Norman Brown. To say that classic rock sucks is painting with a pretty broad brush.

Knowing Jaana's taste in music I think this photo is appropriate.

Basically what i've been taught is "classic", aside from the two artists i mentioned, is Lynyrd Skynyrd(garbage), ZZ Top(no), the Rolling Stones who i actually don't particularly mind, ACDC, who I actually think made some of the worst music of all time, etc. Anything in that area is awful.

Missing out on good stuff young lady.
