 That was my instant reaction as well.
I do think most "classic rock" stations have ridiculously narrow playlists. I mean, Lynyrd Skynyrd was all about a helluva lot more than just "Freebird" and "Gimme Three Steps" but it seems like that's about all you ever hear. Where's "Mississippi Kid" and "Ballad of Curtis Lowe"? You never hear them. So, for that reason, I usually avoid "classic rock" stations.
Sorry for my epic post ... just hear me out, ok?
I'm so glad the people here brought up the issue of hit/shit single litany. One reason I can think of for that is because, well, the companies don't want to leak more than a few songs from an artist/album through the radio. You like the songs? Get the whole fucking album!
It seems to me that the intentions for the radio on the part of the companies and on the part of the listeners are dramatically different. The companies want to sell music, so they are fishing for potential buyers (most likely little kids ... who wasn't introduced to classic rock as a kid?) who have not heard this kind of music before or are just annoyed with hearing just these few songs, so they might as well get the whole album. I presume the suit-types know about the issue of the stuff being "overplayed" on the radio, but I don't think they seem to care. We as listeners have unconsciously become victims of this airplay "mistreatment". Or is it just because we don't know how (or, better yet, when) to listen to the radio?
When you press the "power on" button, you should realize that you've made a choice of listening to the same shit over and over again.
If excessive airplay is not the only issue (since the thread title is rather very general about the main issue here), then maybe you are listening to the wrong songs? There was a time when I used to be into catchy stuff. Today I demand more from music than the "catch", the hooks. Maybe it's (I'll put it in Wiki's terms) "intellectual depth" or "technical command" that turns me on about music, but it's the "artistic beauty" that attracts me the most about music that I personally consider good (and, if anybody must know, my tastes in music are wildly unpopular).
Again, like I said, maybe you are listening to the wrong classic rock songs? Or maybe it's time to listen to other ones. Time for fresh meet, then! Get whole albums by guys like Jethro Tull (respect to ye who mentioned them
... go with the album
Aqualung), Heart (check out all of
Dreamboat Annie), Yes (start with
Fragile), Pink Floyd (I know some people claim that you have to listen to The Dark Side of the Moon as a whole album, track by track, for that "singular experience"), and that's only a cherry on top of a large cake.
I guess what I'm trying to say here is this: you as a listener have to make an effort of breaking out of that radio zombie mold and getting some fresh quality RnR, whether it's popular/famous/mainstream/whatever or not. Sometimes using the right speakers (or even better, headphones! ) can really do the trick. When you listen to the music "right", it's a whole new experience.
Again, sorry for the epic post.
