Well, since this thread was dug back up, I'll comment:
--It was NOT intended to be a comedy. In fact under the surface much of it was sad.
--Heather Graham full frontal is great, and I've always wanted to screw Julianne Moore.
--Burt did a pretty damned good acting job.
--"Where's the cumshot?" Macy is a talent.
--Kudos to the real-life porn cameos and bits.
--That WASN'T Wahlberg's real penis!!

I just watched this again a few nights ago, and I do not view this as a comedy nor do I think the director(Paul Thomas Anderson) was trying to portray porn films in a negative light. This story is about how too much money and too much fame can got to people's head and it doesn't matter what industry you happen to be in. If your not careful the same thing could happen to you. Dirk Diggler let the whole fame monster go straight to his head wich resulted in his down fall

I agree. I don't believe he in any way portrayed the adult industry in a negative light. If anything, PTA shows how the characters in the film are essentially each other's family. Sure, there's the downward spiral aspect to the movie, but it's also a movie that's very loosely based on John Holmes. Unlike Holmes, Dirk is somewhat redeemed at the end of this story as he goes back to Jack to get off the 'nose candy' and returns to a life that he, and others, have found works best for them.
