Boogie Nights

I love this film. Me and my friends quote this movie all the time! :D

Weird. I have Dish... so far as I know I'm not paying for it. I forget how I even found it... it was just there one day. I usually don't stray too far off my Favorites listings so I don't usually even go into the All listings... except to check the 400's to see if HBO or Skinemax is doing a free trial week or something so I can Tivo a bunch of movies.

There are a lot of unreal but well-crafted set pieces in Boogie Nights. My fave is the drug deal scene with Alfred Molina and the kid lighting little ladyfingers. Also Philip Seymour Hoffman saying «I'm a fucking idiot» over and over after making a pass at Diggler.

That director, to me, pumps out long winded crap.
Yes, «There will be blood» could have been half the length and still as interesting.

I enjoyed the movie and can understand why some wouldn't like it for obvious reasons but I can't say that it was meant to be a comedy. Even though there are some hilarious moments throughout it. It was based on John Holmes and some gangster guy and from what I would gather, the movie was about how the people in the movie were trying to leave the porn industry except for Burt's character.

I love Alfred Molina. He's such a cool actor. I love the outtakes/behind the scenes stuff with him in Spider-Man 2. He just seems like a really cool guy. He was awesome in The Company.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman... although he's a good actor I can't stand but to hate him in more than a few of the movies I've seen him in. It's almost uncomfortable to watch him in some stuff, Boogie Nights and Happiness in particular.

I might catch "There Will Be Blood" tomorrow... looks pretty awesome. Daniel Day Lewis looks about as scary in that as he was in Gangs of New York.

Was this movie supposed to be a comedy? Everything about it is so fucking ridiculous. There isn't a brain among the characters in this movie. I swear they're all retarded.

Was there any people from the porn industry that were pissed about this movie for portraying them as basically the most lowest most moronic scum on the planet? Or were a lot of the characters based on various elements of various porn actors lives?

I've laughed more watching this movie than a lot of "real" comedies.

I know some of these actors must have had a hard time dumbing down their abilities, because a lot of the people in this movie are actually good actors... but the acting almost seems to be intentionally bad at a lot of points.

^Everything he said^ I was just thinking that when watching it on IFC the other day.

It's listed as a "drama," I believe, but it's so satirical that you can't help but laugh at some (if not most) of the shit.

My fave is the drug deal scene with Alfred Molina and the kid lighting little ladyfingers. .

Hell yeah. Everytime I see that scene I can't help but LMAO.

I don't like the director PAul Thomas Anderson. He tends to DRAG his scenes. Did you notice that moment when Dirk and his friends are about to make the deal with that Coke Gangster. Before the shit hits the fan, there is a moment where the camera is on Dirk, and he just....stares off....for like 45 seconds, while these lyrics to a song play. I mean what the hell was the point of that moment? And the stupid look on his face...he was staring off making a Napolean Dynamite face for fuck's sake.

But I thought Burt's character Jack was outstanding.

That's the funiest part. The look on his face is flipping hilarious. He just looks like....WTF, just all zooted out of his mind like hadn't slept in 7 days. Everytime I see that scene I can't help but roll...

I liked the movie a lot. I saw it first time when I was in fifth grade. Mark's acting was really good and the movie had a good plot.

yep. i like it too.
it's a good peek-a-boo at the porn bussiness.

maybe some real pornstar may tell us if it's really accurate.

i saw it in the theater. great film

I love that part too...he doesn't blink for over 45 seconds. Ever try not blinking for that long...it's damn near impossible. It's harder than holding your breath for an extended period. That one simple scene of him staring shows how Dirk has completely lost control of everything and it just gone. Cool scene. And the Chinese kid with the firecrackers annoys the fuck out of me!

I thought this movie was great, one of my favorites actually. Burt Reynolds did an A+ job in this movie, noone could have played an old pervert any better. Nina Hartley played in this movie also, so I guess porn actors werent too offende by it.

She was little Bill's (the guy that shot himself at the new year's party) wife.
During the Commentary, PTA said audiences cheered when Little Bill shot his wife, and the guy she was riding. Which wasnt the reaction PTA wanted when he was previewing the film. He actually thought he seriously fucked up. That was, until Little Bill turned the gun on himself. Then they shut the fuck up real quick.

And thus, PTA was happy. :D
