Take a look at baseball's early #1 draft picks. It is a virtual who's who of who cares. Some were OK. A couple all stars. But: Rick Monday, Chilcott, Ron Blomberg, Tim Foli, Jeff Burroughs, Danny Goodman (twice!), Dave Roberts, David Clyde, Bill Almon, Floyd Bannister. These were the picks of the first dozen years. Put together a team with those guys in their primes and...ouch.
Later, we have the likes of Al Chambers, Shawn Abner, Ben McDonald, Taylor, Paul Wilson, Kris Benson, Matt Anderson, Bryan Bullington, and Matthew Bush. That is a whole lotta failure.
The failure of the first Dirty Dozen is sort of understandable - scouting at the time then was nowhere near what it is now. But, man, that is a lot of failure. The number one pick would - in a perfect world - be the best of the best. Seeing that, it was not until 1987 (Ken Griffey Jr.) that a certified Hall-of-Famer was drafted number one.
Goes to show you - Strasburg does not really have a whole lot to live up to.

It a few years, we might be adding Greg Oden to this list, not necessarily because he is so bad, but because Kevin Durant is that good.

i voted the obvious bust leaf, russell is still not a done deal but is surely a huge bust yet leaf was just a lot of hype that never amounted to much where i feel russell was inflated to his level by the raiders foolishness. history may prove russell to be worse though if he fades away now due to his own laziness.

That's a whole lot of bust in those names there, for sure. Now I'm just going to sit back and wait for a Red Sox fan to read your post and come tell all of us how you're wrong, and that Dave Roberts was one of the best base-stealers ever to play the game.

Wrong Dave Roberts.

I think you're right, Diva :o Whoops.

Freddy Adu has to be considered a huge sports bust.

Hideki Irabu...another Yankee pitching bust. Dice-K :mad: for my Sawx....

Kimbo Slice is a complete bust....although is MMA even a sport? Probably not.

I went ryan leaf, but holy shit, i forgot all about freddy adu. And Dice-K isn't that much of a bust considering he won a shitload of games for the redsox. He can still redeem himself once he gets back to full health.

I don't think you can really consider Freddy Adu that much of a bust. Even during his most hyped moments most of the people here didn't know who he was. :1orglaugh

Jon Koncak :
Though a reliable defender for much of his career, Koncak is perhaps best remembered for the six-year, US$ 13 million contract he received from the Hawks in 1989 - an unprecedented total for a reserve. The deal was roundly criticized since it paid Koncak more than Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. His large contract prevented the Hawks from taking part in any other major free agent signings for several years. As a result, he earned the derisive nickname "Jon Contract."

I dont see how Jam Russell is the biggest bust, cuz I think he never had the expectations of these other guys. How many people thought that he'd actually become a great player? Ryan Leaf was supposed to be a franchise savior. Tony Mandarich and Andre Wadsworth we're sure things. I'm not sure Russell was ever looked upon as these things.

Uh... Russell was the number 1 pick in the entire NFL draft.
