Just about anything from dimes

The solo on "Layla" was Duane Allman....not Clapton. I agree it is awesome though!
No it wasn't .. the out of tune slide guitar after the piano figure is Allman ... Clapton stole the Layla lick from Freddie King anyway

* Kid Charlemagne - Larry Carlton - on the a Steely Dan album Royal Scam
* How do the fools survive - the playout solo .. one take .... Jeff "Skunk" Baxter
* Neon - John Mayer, the version from inside wants out
* And you bird can sing - George Harrison.. harmony guitar way before Wishbone Ash or The Allmans
* The Claw - Jerry Reed
* Hocus Pocus - Jan Akkerman

And almost any solo by the genius guitar player Richard Thompson

There are too many great guitar solos to just name one. I'm not just talking about rock, but I'm thinking of all styles. Some of my favorites include:

While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles
Still Got The Blues For You - Gary Moore
Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2 - Pink Floyd
Tamacun - Rodrigo y Gabriela
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
La Grange - ZZ Top
Like A Stone - Audioslave
Flight of the Bumblebee (live) - Yngwie Malmsteen
Eruption - Van Halen
Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
Give It Away - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Walk - Pantera
November Rain - Guns 'n Roses
Mr. Crowley - Ozzy Osbourne
Canarios - Julian Bream
The Thrill is Gone - BB King
One - Metallica
Sleepwalker - Santo & Johnny
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
Baby, Please Don't Go - John Lee Hooker
Cliffs of Dover - Eric Johnson
Cavatina - John Williams
Frankenstein - Edgar Winters
I Got Rhythm - Django Reinhart
Solo Flight - Charlie Christian
Crossroads - Cream
Caravan - Chet Atkins & Les Paul
Lazy - Deep Purple
Ramblin' Man - Allman Brothers Band
Back in Black - AC/DC
Concierto de Aranjuez - Adagio - Christopher Parkening & the London Symphony Orchestra

I was privileged enough to see a concert with Dave matthews and Tim Reynolds. Both guys played acoustic guitars and an awesome solo from that set was from "What Would You Say". The whole show was amazing but that song was incredible. But I also agree with what mood I'm in

Stevie Ray Vaughn on a 12- string, don't remember the name of the song, but he tore it up from the floor up !!!

well... if its rock you are talking about, id have to say... any GNR solo off appetite for destruction, because its ROCK.

for european metal and those shredding virtuosos...

DragonForce anyone?
Arch Enemy - Taking back my soul; The day you died (there are many more tho)
Soilwork - Machine Gun Majesty (perfomed by Mattias "IA" Eklundh, he apparently used a pocket dildo/vibrator on the pickups during on point of the solo, its very reminisant of the drill on Van Halen's Poundcake'
ANYTHING by Children of Bodom/Sinergy/Warmen
Mercenary - The 'Hours That Remain' cd, yes all of it

Virtuosos
Marty Friedman/Jason Becker - Speed Metal Symphony
Jason Becker - Air
Marty Friedman/Mustaine- Hangar 18 and Tornado of Souls
Steve Vai - Juice
Michael Angelo Batio - anything recorded by him (its like shredding on steriods, i highly suggest Zeppelin forever, or Dream on, or Tribute to Randy if anyone disagrees

Best Guitar solo?
One of the greatest is the intro of "Sweet Child of mine" from Guns 'R Roses.

most everything jimi hendrix did and especially machine gun w/ band of gypsies, alvin lee w/ten years after im going home, santana black magic women, eric claptons layla and many other but those are the picks that immediately come to mind

Oh, come on! Alvin Lee has no notion of how to build a great solo. Playing a constant stream of notes that becomes a 14 1/2 minute-long phrase is NOT the way to build a great solo, it just shows you have finger dexterity.
