What must be kept in mind that while it's nice to be able to be good on defense, and that's a tremendous advantage to the people who are like that with the exception of pitchers, defensive ability is almost never as important as offensive ability. You can't treat fielding and hitting equally, because it isn't, at least not in terms of what helps a team win. It's almost always better to have a great hitter who is a bad fielder than it is a bad hitter who is a great fielder at even the defensive positions.
