How in the hell does Roberts now allow Kershaw to finish that game - considering the bullpen's woes? He'd thrown like 104 pitches through 8. Getting up there but not outrageous, and he was still clearly sharp.

I'm not crying being as I bet the Giants - I thought they were a great value in that game at nearly 2 to 1 odds.

I just don't get the thinking there, at all.

Sybermetrics. The Dodgers are MLB's prevailing team and they use it the most. Next come the Cubs with Joe Maddon. Look at the 2017 World Series. Roberts started Yu Darvish in game 7 instead of Alex Wood. Now, everyone knows that Yu Darvish is not the same pitcher, not anyway since the Tommy John surgery in 2015. The Dodgers mindset also forgot that Darvish while with the Rangers play the Astros nineteen times in a season. Conversely, the Astros may have faced Darvish three or four times during that nineteen game stretch. They know him all too well. Roberts should have gone with Alex Wood.

Managers who don't subscribe to the "sabermetric" way are often criticized. Hands on guys like: Bruce Bochy (Giants), Terry Collins (Mets), John Farrell (Red Sox). Joe Girardi probably lost his job with the Yankees because he didn't use it a lot. That and because he didn't have a good rapport with the next Yankee "salvation," Gary Sanchez.

Roberts last night went with percentages, and lost by not using Clayton Kershaw in the ninth. Too little common sense.

Sabermetrics . Ugh. Yeah they can be of use, but when you become a slave to them you're lost.

Another 9th inning loss tonight. That's four 9th inning losses in a row lol

Reminds me of the Giants a couple of years ago, who lost a whole bunch of last inning games.

The one statistic that I can't fathom in which they use a lot especially during contract negotiations is Wins Above Replacement or WAR. A high number tells you how good you are especially if a replacement player replaced you on the roster giving your team a certain number of wins as a whole. With you in the starting lineup or you in the starting rotation or in the bullpen, your team would have that many wins plus additional wins. I don't buy it and I don't subscribe to it. What a crock! You could be on the the Red Sox (I'm choosing them because they are the best overall MLB team in 2018), with terrible stats: a .212 BA, 4 HR, 24 RBIs. In other words, you s-u-c-k but because you are on the Red Sox your WAR number would be very high. Give me a break. It's a terrible statistic. They should scrap it and go back to game winning RBIs. Now that is a more useful statistic.

That's not how it works, if you suck on a good team your WAR still sucks. For example, only two positon players for the Red Sox currently have a very high WAR, Mookie Betts (7,9) and J.D. Martinez (5,1). In fact, there are only 19 players in the majors with a very high WAR and by "very high" I mean above 4,5. And WAR also includes players' defensive and baserunning stats, not just offense.

:goodpost:

As for those who want to know what Wins Above Replacement or WAR is. Here's an explanation:

Though I still think that game winning RBIs should be brought back as a stat.

Hey John have the Giants won a game yet this month? lol

Good grief talk about pathetic

There have been six game this month where they could have helped the Dodgers and they've gone 0 and 6. Three more coming up this weekend. I guess they'll probably roll over for the Rockies too :thefinger

It's not good to challenge history ... 1951, 1962, 1982, etc. :nono: ...

Well I hope the NL West title comes down to the last weekend in San Francisco. If the Rockies pull ahead on that Sunday and the Dodgers desperately need the win. They'll have to get past Madison Bumgarner. The Giants won't be facing Clayton Kershaw because the team will need him in game 1 of the NLDS.

Oh it looks like the Dodgers loooooooooooooooose again. HA-HA. ;) No playoffs for the Guggenheim Partners again. :elaugh:

A sad day in New York sports. :(

Heh. No spoiler glory for the Giants.
Instead they set a franchise record for futility, going 5 and 21 in September.

Still, they have three rings in the last 30 years and the Dodgers have none, so the Dodgers and fans have zero room to talk any trash.

Pretty much the whole season ... Of the 89 losses overall, you can probably attribute about 63 losses to the gawd awful bullpen.

Thanks. :)

Walter Buehler (The LAD no-hitter is highlighted here) was pitching another gem today. No hitting the Rockies through 5 innings. Those poor Colorado Rockies fans. You know what is going to happen, like it always does. They'll go to Chicago tomorrow and play the Cubs, lose and that will be their season. Historically the Rockies play .650 + ball at home and .425 ball on the road. Except in 2007, when they had that season ending winning streak. I think it was like 23 wins out of 29 games -- getting past the Padres at the end of the season to claim the WC, in the NLDS getting past the Phillies, in the NLCS getting past the Dodgers, only to lose in the World Series to the Red Sox.

Would it have been different if the Rockies had had that game at home today? Probably. The Dodgers would probably packing for Chicago.

I would not have pictured this in a hundred years but the 2018 National League preseason favorite Chicago Cubs were just eliminated from the 2018 postseason. Congratulations to the Colorado Rockies and their fans as they now take on the Milwaukee Brewers in Milwaukee in the NLDS. The Atlanta Braves go to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers in the other NLDS series.

Postseason update - The defending world champion Houston Astros were just eliminated by the Boston Red Sox in the 2018 ALCS. Congratulations to the Boston Red Sox on clinching their fourteenth AL pennant.

The Los Angeles Dodgers can gain a berth to the World Series tomorrow, by defeating the Milwaukee Brewers as they lead the series 3 games to 2. They play game six of the 2018 NLCS in Milwaukee on Friday.
