How in the hell does Roberts now allow Kershaw to finish that game - considering the bullpen's woes? He'd thrown like 104 pitches through 8. Getting up there but not outrageous, and he was still clearly sharp.
I'm not crying being as I bet the Giants - I thought they were a great value in that game at nearly 2 to 1 odds.
I just don't get the thinking there, at all.
Sybermetrics. The Dodgers are MLB's prevailing team and they use it the most. Next come the Cubs with Joe Maddon. Look at the 2017 World Series. Roberts started Yu Darvish in game 7 instead of Alex Wood. Now, everyone knows that Yu Darvish is not the same pitcher, not anyway since the Tommy John surgery in 2015. The Dodgers mindset also forgot that Darvish while with the Rangers play the Astros nineteen times in a season. Conversely, the Astros may have faced Darvish three or four times during that nineteen game stretch. They know him all too well. Roberts should have gone with Alex Wood.
Managers who don't subscribe to the "sabermetric" way are often criticized. Hands on guys like: Bruce Bochy (Giants), Terry Collins (Mets), John Farrell (Red Sox). Joe Girardi probably lost his job with the Yankees because he didn't use it a lot. That and because he didn't have a good rapport with the next Yankee "salvation," Gary Sanchez.
Roberts last night went with percentages, and lost by not using Clayton Kershaw in the ninth. Too little common sense.
