Adolf Hitler

Hitler was an idiot when came to generalship. The German chain of command did not have a weak link during WWII. Erwin Rommel, Heinz Guderian, and Erich von Manstein are considered Hitler's three most talented top level commanders. Nazi Germany produced many more first class commanders. Even, the Waffen SS had very competent commanders.

My list of Hitler's top military blunders of war.

1. Invading the Soviet Union, Stalin's purge of Red Army leadership during the late 1930s helped the Germans, and Stalin thought war was coming a year later, so he was caught off guard. The Germans were helped by unpreparedness of the Soviet leadership.

2. Delaying the Wehrmahct to take Moscow.

3. The decision to attack Stalingrad rather than to secure the oilfields in the Caucuses first.

3. Stopping the Panzers at Dunkirk and allowing the escape over 300,000 allied troops.

4. Not invading Malta which was the main base for Allied attacks on Axis resupply shipping destined for Afrika Korps. The Afrika Korps could have took the Suez Canal and cutoff Britain's Middle Eastern oil supply.

5. Normandy D-Day: Hitler should have backed Rommel's plan of stationing the panzers on the beaches. He chose to put the panzer under his direct control. Hitler took a sleeping pill and slept until noon on D-Day.

In my view Hitler's biggest mistake was that he started the war that Germany could not win.

Crazy idea was also that the Germans began killing people.

Hitler's first thing when he gained power was to imprison all union leaders and tear down the middle class and the working class, it created the poor and the powerful

Most people I ask that have met him say he was a very polite and charismatic man. They say HE was very nice, but Goebbels was an ass. Really, many old people I ask say this.

A couple weeks ago I met one of Hitler's bodyguards and the last witness of his suicide, Rochus Misch. I asked him how he was and he said he was just a regular guy. :D I asked him if Goebbels was indeed an ass and he neither confirmed nor denied. He just said he was very intelligent.

On topic, like Johan mentioned he was an exceptional and excellent military and political leader.

As a military strategist Hitler was of such great help to the allied cause that they postponed his assasination.
As an orator he was excellent, however; hardly a dry seat in the house. Seriously, just watch some of his speeches.

I dunno if he was a great leader at all. He mostly focussed on the "Blitzkrieg" method and yeah he boosted the German economy. The German scientists were the best in the world during this time imo. And yes, he was a "great" speaker. He used techniques no one ever used before and spoke out what most of the German people were thinking at the time. But Hitler was overwelmed of his megalomania and his mental sickness towards the end of the war.

He was a poor military leader, but what about his political skills?

The final result is decisive.

The German army beat British and French army, but the Red army defeated Wehrmacht.

"Give me ten years and you will not able to recognize Germany"

(Adolf Hitler 1935)

I think that the main British army would have been properly beaten up if it had faced the German army in France in 1940.

Channel saved British from that fate.

It is historical truth that it was the Red Army who stopped the the Wehrmacht for the first time and forced it to retreat in the winter 1941/1942.

I am referring to the fact that the British were beat up by German army in Norway (1940) in France (1940) in Crete (1941) and also in Africa.

In my view Hitler's biggest mistake was that he started the war that Germany could not win.

Crazy idea was also that the Germans began killing people.

Yes but dangerous one.

Funny how Assari forgets that most Finns were serving either in the Wehrmacht or in the Waffen SS during WWII.

Hitler had a heart of gold. A philanthropist who never took but always gave. Do you remember when he adopted poor orphaned Bambi after evil Jewish hunters had killed its mother? :crying:
