Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski declared Detroit out of the Max Scherzer sweepstakes. Thus, he removed one of the clubs that was viewed as a candidate to sign the most prominent free agent pitcher. Instead, with the acquisition last week of Shane Greene from the Yankees and the trade Thursday for Cincinnati’s Alfredo Simon, the Tigers now view themselves as set in the rotation with that duo behind Justin Verlander, David Price and Anibal Sanchez.
A little more background on the Tigers new starter Alfredo Simon: In January 2011, Simón allegedly shot and killed Michel Castillo Almonte and wounded his 17-year-old brother during a New Year's Eve celebration in Luperón, Dominican Republic. Simón denied the allegations. Police then announced intention to file involuntary manslaughter charges. In March 2011, Simón posted bail. He pitched for the Baltimore Orioles AAA minor league affiliate. On November 8, 2011, Simon was acquitted of involuntary manslaughter.
Rape allegation: In April 2014, Simón was sued by a woman who alleged that he had raped her in a Washington, D.C. hotel room about one year earlier, while the Reds were in Washington for a series against the Washington Nationals.
Looking at Alfredo's legal docket isn't pretty. On top of all that he's 33 years old and has just one decent half season to his credit. Already don't like this move! What can Mr. Dombrowski be thinking, give up a 26 year old stud pitcher in Porcello and replaces him with a 33 year old in Simon with a questionable background? And now they don’t want to resign Max... the Tigers are in deep trouble.
