so the Cubs sign Jon Lester and acquire Miguel Montero to fill the catcher spot. i wonder which hitter they go after?

Wow. Nearly $26 million a year. Bold move by the Cubs....it had better pay off. I wonder if they will move on Cespedes next?

The Spink Award boasts a famous roster of writers, notably Ring Lardner, Grantland Rice, Damon Runyon, Leonard Koppett, Peter Gammons, Bill Madden and Roger Angell.

The Tigers and Red Sox are pulling off a big trade according to Fox’s C.J. Nitkowski: starting pitcher Rick Porcello to Boston in exchange for outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

Cespedes certainly has pop in his bat, an a good outfield arm, but his on-base percentage last season (.301), (.316) in his three seasons, heavily weighted by his first one, is a major problem. Also: Comerica Park is not going to be the best place in the world for his home run stroke. Both Cespedes and Porcello have one year to go before free agency. Cespedes hit a combined .260 with 22 homers an 100 RBI’s with Oakland and Boston in 2014, he struck out 128 times in 600 at-bats with just 35 walks and 7 stolen bases.

I wonder if this means the Tigers are about to resign Max because if it doesn’t I do not like this deal at all. I thought the Tigers brass would have learned by now you never give up good starting pitching. You win pennants with pitching and not with overrated .260 hitters. This trade has all the potential of being another Doug Fister like deal.

I don't like this deal for the Tigers either. It might mean there's another deal in the works for another starting pitcher for the Tigers. If Scherzer signs elsewhere-they're screwed.

The other deal just took place. The Tigers acquired right-hander Alfredo Simon from the Cincinnati Reds for infielder Eugenio Suarez and minor league pitcher right-hander Jonathon Crawford.

Simon, had a breakout season a year ago for the Reds, going 15-10 with a 3.44 ERA over a career-high 32 starts. However, the 33-year-old Simon had primarily been a reliever over the course of his first six seasons and the extra work load may have taken its toll, as he appeared to wear down in the second half. Teams hit .282 against him after the break opposed to the .219 clip they hit him at in the first half. His ERA was also nearly two runs higher in the second half of the year. Simon has posted a 32-28 mark to go along with a 3.86 ERA and 19 saves in 209 games (51 starts) for the Baltimore Orioles and the Cincinnati Reds.

Suarez appeared in 85 games for the Tigers last season and hit .242 with four home runs and 23 RBI's.

Cardinals get a major RH power bat off the bench in Mark Reynolds. Yeah, I know he strikes out a lot but there aren't a lot of other options out there than can present a similar power presence in a pinch-hit scenario. He won't be needed for much else....maybe spell Matt Adams against specific lefties once in a while. Bottom line is....we had zero HRs off the bench last year and that had to change. It just did.

Elsewhere, the Astros finally got a couple of key arms to make a vast improvement to their pathetic bullpen. Now, with Qualls and Neshek as setup guys and Gregerson to close, their pen suddenly looks formidable. Big step forward for a team that has sucked for a long, long time.

And the Mets got (drum roll please)... John Mabry Jr. But they did showcase pitching. I'm sure something will come up between now and spring training.

Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski declared Detroit out of the Max Scherzer sweepstakes. Thus, he removed one of the clubs that was viewed as a candidate to sign the most prominent free agent pitcher. Instead, with the acquisition last week of Shane Greene from the Yankees and the trade Thursday for Cincinnati’s Alfredo Simon, the Tigers now view themselves as set in the rotation with that duo behind Justin Verlander, David Price and Anibal Sanchez.

A little more background on the Tigers new starter Alfredo Simon: In January 2011, Simón allegedly shot and killed Michel Castillo Almonte and wounded his 17-year-old brother during a New Year's Eve celebration in Luperón, Dominican Republic. Simón denied the allegations. Police then announced intention to file involuntary manslaughter charges. In March 2011, Simón posted bail. He pitched for the Baltimore Orioles AAA minor league affiliate. On November 8, 2011, Simon was acquitted of involuntary manslaughter.

Rape allegation: In April 2014, Simón was sued by a woman who alleged that he had raped her in a Washington, D.C. hotel room about one year earlier, while the Reds were in Washington for a series against the Washington Nationals.

Looking at Alfredo's legal docket isn't pretty. On top of all that he's 33 years old and has just one decent half season to his credit. Already don't like this move! What can Mr. Dombrowski be thinking, give up a 26 year old stud pitcher in Porcello and replaces him with a 33 year old in Simon with a questionable background? And now they don’t want to resign Max... the Tigers are in deep trouble.

Did they get any bullpen help? I agree, I don't like that move at all.

Not to seem petty Robert but they didn't sign John Mabry Jr., they signed John Mayberry Jr. John Mabry is the Cardinals' batting coach. No small signing BTW....Mayberry hits the shit out of lefthanded pitching. Nice pickup for $1.45 million.

Yeah Jagger69 the mets have bigger needs than a platoon OF, like a good SS and they have pitching to flip if they where willing. when there GM was interviewed he said they where likely to reduce there payroll again. with the Pitchers they have they need a good glove at SS

The top five moves made at this years Baseball Winter meetings in San Diego.

1.) Jon Lester signs with the Cubs for 6 years and $155 million.
2.) The Red Sox trade Yoenis Cespedes, Alex Wilson and a minor league prospect to Detroit for Rick Porcello.
3.) The Dodgers trade Matt Kemp to San Diego for Yasmani Grandal and two prospects.
4.) The Athletics send Jeff Samardzija to the Chicago White Sox in a 6 player trade. On top of this the White Sox sign closer David Robertson.
5.) The Phillies trade Jimmy Rollins to the Los Angeles Dodgers for two minor league prospects.
