Sure glad we won last night but you won't see a much better catch than Juan Perez of the Giants made on what looked like a sure-fire HR by Stephen Piscotty.

Jagger, I hope the SI cover jinx isn't real.

It already is. The guy they show on the cover (Jason Heyward) is out with a hamstring injury. Our entire starting OF is either out with an injury or on the DL. Our starting first baseman and ace of the starting rotation are both on the DL. Two critical setup relievers are on the DL. Our #1 LH pitching prospect in AAA is on the DL. The fucking batboy is on the goddamned DL for chrissakes!!! We have Yadier Molina (4 HRs so far this year) hitting cleanup. If it wasn't for our magnificent starting rotation and excellent closer I don't think we would win another game this year. I wish this article and cover had never been printed.

Testament to an outstanding organization. There's time to get healthy and get the groove back.

True. Amazing that, in spite of the plethora of injuries, we still have the best record in MLB. That won't last long if we can't get healthy soon, however. Pittsburgh is proving to be more than a formidable opponent....a terrific offense and a more-than-capable pitching staff (although I believe that Locke and Morton are back-of-rotation starters at best). Their bullpen is strong....I fear them more than anyone else in the NL for sure. Also, the Cubs appear to be for real and, unless the Giants can mount some sort of serious winning streak, I'd expect Chicago to take the second wild card spot. Very tough division.

Dodgers get no hit by the Astros worst starter :1orglaugh

But it's ok, we picked up 36 year old Chase Utley (batting .220) yesterday, so I'm sure all will be well
Particularly as he's joining his old middle infield mate Jimmy Rollins (also batting .220).

My grade for the new general management regime of the Dodgers this year: D+

Giants will win the west. No doubt in my mind. Cubs will take second wildcard by daylight over the Bums and their two man pitching staff

I don't understand the Utley trade :wtf:

I saw the game on TV last night and it was amazing to watch Fiers mow 'em down. I kept thinking to myself "there's no way this guy throws a no-no at the Dodgers" but then....shit, he just went out and did it.

I too am baffled by the Dodgers' roster moves of late. So now, with Kendrick healthy, they have three second basemen?? No affront to Utley, who has been an awesome player throughout his career, but this makes zero sense. They obviously are in desperate need of setup relief pitching and they have done nothing to improve the situation. Besides Jansen, their bullpen is terrible. So, if you can stay close while Greinke and Kershaw and company are pitching with leads into the late innings, there's a great chance they will unravel when guys like Johnson and Baez come trotting out.

Speaking of the Dodgers, I'll be at Minute Maid Park tonight and Sunday. Sitting in the first row of section 101 in the Crawford Boxes in LF so look for me. I'll be the guy holding the "I  Freeones" sign! ;)

Here's an excellent article from the LA Times regarding recent moves by Zaidi:

My condolences, I have a Brother in Law who's a Dodger fan. He would always refer to them as chokers and would long for the days of the 70's/80's Dodgers with Garvey,Baker,Lopes, etc.

Jays roll through Anaheim scoring 36 runs in 3 games to move into first by 1/2 game over the Yankees. This offence is damned scary.

Dombroski has some work to do in Boston. They have some good pieces with some good kids.

Yeah nobody in the AL is beating them in the playoffs, juggernaut.

I hope he takes Brad Ausmus, Justin Verlander and Alex Avila with him.

Seriously though, Mr. Dombrowski is a good baseball man, the Tigers will miss him. My only criticism of Mr. D, he failed to build a bull pen.

That was literally the teams only flaw for a decade and he couldn't fix it, what a shame. He took them from worst to first but the window slammed shut before he could win them a championship.

I don't know how the teams in the NL Central could be any more impressive. Even though the Cardinals have been leading all year long, the Pirates and Cubs have been simply on fire in recent weeks and the race is tightening up. The Cubs really are hot right now and have taken 6 straight. They are crushing the Giants in a head-to-head battle that is rapidly seeing San Francisco slide out of contention for the second wild card. They're best bet is to try to wrest the division from LA since it appears likely that both wild card teams will be from the Central Division. I don't know how the Cardinals are holding on with all of their injuries. Guys who spent most of the year at AAA Memphis like Piscotty and Pham are filling in admirably while the pitching staff just keeps rolling along....a 9-1 drubbing of the D-backs last night in Phoenix. In spite of the holes in their lineup, they are the first team in MLB to hit 80 wins and have a .640 winning percentage. All three teams have serious head-to-head showdowns with each other in September so this should be a race to the wire....easily 3 teams that could all end up with 95-plus wins.

i think the Cardinals deal so well with injuries because when they promote guys the do not ask them to do anything they can't, they just ask them to do their job. some excel and some do not but they have a system and preach all through the minors and it works

Your observations are spot on, Red. For some reason, the kids we bring up from Memphis seem ready and able to assume their place in the organization. Our farm system is unquestionably the backbone of the franchise.

After sweeping a 4-game set at Arizona, we finish up a grueling 10-game road trip with 3 against the Giants starting tonight. With Wacha toeing the rubber tonight, I like our chances. We take 2 out of 3 against SF and this trip, which started out with 2 bumbling slapstick losses against the Padres, will be a tremendous success at 7-3. The Cubs losing 2 straight has helped a lot. Hoping the Dodgers can slow Pittsburgh down for us a bit this weekend as well. If we go into September with a 5-game lead, I think it will be very tough for either Pittsburgh or Chicago to overtake us. Still, I'm not taking anything for granted. I'll feel a whole lot better when Holliday and Grichuk are back in the lineup. Until then, we're actually playing over our heads. Way over. It's been an incredible year for us so far....this team has tremendous grit and determination. We just never give up.
