well you know the Tigers are desperate when the hope Jim Johnson will help the bullpen
i see the A's are in a deep offensive slump while the Angels seem to be getting a bit more consistent offensively hence the change at the top of the AL West

Obviously, a strong starting rotation is critical for success on the diamond. However, without a strong bullpen it often goes for naught. There's no more disheartening way to lose than to have your starter go 7 strong innings only to have the bullpen piss it away in the later stages of the game. There are two formulas for victory....either beat the other team into submission by scoring a bunch of runs or be able to outpitch them in a close game. Sure, the Tigers and Dodgers (and maybe the A's) have really dominant starting pitching but without the bullpen to back them up, they remain highly vulnerable. The key to beating them is to stay close late.

I can't recall the last time things seemed so wide-open in almost every division. There seems to be no obviously-superior team as we steam toward the end of the season. Whoever gets hot at the right time and can maintain good pitching all the way through their staff will have the edge. Right now, I don't know who that might be. It's great, isn't it?? I love baseball....especially this time of year.

The only team I see running away is Baltimore. The last time they lost 3 in a row was May. The get better and better every week. The Yanks are no threat. They went from trading water to awful. They picked the perfect season to start the extended wildcard. At this point no one else is comfortable with their divisional leads.

Washington is simply on fire, has won 9 straight and is pulling away from Atlanta now with a 7 game lead in the NL East. Plus, by sweeping the Reds out of Busch Stadium last night, the Cardinals might have finished them off in the NL Central....they are now 10 games out.

Manny Machado is out for the season. That really hurts Baltimore. Tampa will still be heard from in the AL East.

Jagger, Wainwright is hurting me the last couple weeks in fantasy.

Is he pitching hurt?

Not that I am aware of. He was lights out in his last start. I'll give him a hall pass for last night. He just wasn't on his game pitching-wise but the throwing error he made to allow a run to score was inexcusable. Like a rookie mistake....very atypical. I'm not worried about Waino. He'll be solid for us down the stretch but he sure wasn't solid last night.

Until they ran into the Cubbies. :D Who suddenly have the 2nd lowest team ERA in August. And it would be lower if they stopped giving starts to Edwin Jackson (who's hurt now... thank god). Kyle Hendricks and Jake Arrieta have been pitching extremely well. Tsuyoshi Wada has had some terrific starts. If they can add Lester or Scherzer in the off-season, they'll have a pretty damn good rotation.

Offensively, Javier Baez has been a fucking beast. Arismendy Alcantara is coming around. Jorge Soler, Kris Bryant (42 HR in AA & AAA), Addison Russel, and Albert Almora aren't even up with the big club yet.

With the #1 farm system in baseball (ESPN) this team has a very bright future. Don't be surprised if the Cubs are competitive next year. For now, I'm enjoying watching them play spoiler.

Everything seems to be breaking right for the Kansas City Royals. They have won 24 and lost 7 over their last 31 games and have taken over first place in the A.L. Central Division. According to STATS the Royals will have the easiest schedule for the rest of the season. However, the law of baseball averages would dictate that they come back down to earth soon. It must also be said the tattered and torn Detroit Tigers face a rather easy schedule as well. It is conceivable the Tigers could string together a series of victories too, that is if the can quit beating themselves, like Saturday’s 20-6 ugly loss to the lowly Twins.

the cubs are calling up Soler for Wednesdays game. do not be surprised if the cubs actually sign both Lester and Scherzer they have the money

The Tigers need to shutdown Verlander or move him to the pen he's definitely still not right health wise

Yusmeiro Petit SF Giant..........46 batters retired in a row! Holy shit....do not think any other in the future could accomplish this feat.

That was amazing.
Just when it looked like The Giants were headed out to pasture they have instead caught fire.....and totally humiliated The Brewers in the last 3 games of a 4 game sweep.

much to Jagger's delight, I'm sure :)

As a Sox fan glad Dunn is gone. Bad contract from Kenny Williams after the numbers he put up with the Nats the year before never panned out for us.

J.D. Martinez hit safely three times and hit the go-ahead three-run home run in the top of ninth inning, lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians last night. However, Kansas City won their game with Texas, 2-1. The Tigers still find themselves in second place, ½ game out of first, with 24 games remaining.

Go Tigers!!!

...
omg the Dodgers ....... :anonymous:
They look bound and determined to go completely in the tank

This team has won 78 games but they're hitting .175 with the bases loaded this year. .175
I'm wondering, has any team with a winning record ever had a lower season batting average with the bases loaded?

Today - bases loaded 1 out in both the 10th and 11th innings. Failed to score either time, as usual (thanks in part to a major Mattingly brain fart in the 10th).

Also, of those 78 wins they have only won 2 games when they've trailed after the 7th inning. TWO

They are also 5 and 11 in extra inning games.

What a strange freaking team ........(shaking head)

If it weren't for their starting pitching they'd be totally buried.

Jag, are your Cards ready to put the nails into the Brewer's coffin this weekend? The rest of the schedule are all cream puffs.
