Day 1 Heineken Open
Got a better camera, so the images are scaled down to 10%. Maybe a bit much, but I wont re-do them now

Pere Riba beat NZ player (Jose) Rubin Statham in the final qualifying match. Rubin made a good start winning the first set but Pere made a comeback win (I think this was the guy that lost to James Blake in half an hour last year?)
4-6 6-4 6-3
http://www.imagebam.com/image/ced254114592583

Santiago Giraldo outplayed Daniel Gimeno-Traver (who started off quite badly) 6-2 6-4. At least Daniel had some snazzy shoes. There were a small group of Colombians cheering Santiago on too.
http://www.imagebam.com/image/34f791114592575

Then NZ number 1 Michael Venus (kinda sounds like a porn name) played former world number 5 Tommy Robredo. Venus started off really well too with some punchy forehands, taking the first set in a tie-break. However, Robredo was best class and fought back to win in 3, including a bagel in the third (Venus said his fitness wasnt holding up by then, he looked slow and tired at the end). 6-7 6-3 6-0.
http://www.imagebam.com/image/c9018f114592588

The NZ doubles team of Marcus Daniell and Artem Sitak(former Russian) lost to Frantisek Cermak and Christopher Kas 6-4 6-4. Marcus was actually part of the winning doubles team last year so it would be disappointing to go out early.
http://www.imagebam.com/image/3c493d114592571

Last match I saw was Philipp Kohlschreiber taking on Carlos Berlocq(kinda looks like an older Verasco I think). They both have one handed backhanded but Kohls was majorly off in the first set as he lost it 6-2. He managed to get back into gear though and the backhand starting firing, creating some nice angles. He played quite a few quality drop shots too. The German came back to win 2-6 6-3 6-1 (Go Philipp )
He seems to be a crowd favourite.
http://www.imagebam.com/image/6cab10114592579

Today Juan Monaco lost to a qualifier and Nalbandian is up a set against Fabio Fognini.
I will be there tomorrow when the top seeds play (Ferrer/Almagro/Isner/Montanes). Gonna be good :nanner:
It seems pretty darn hot here, but it will be worse in Australia + its best of 5 sets. I could almost excuse Djokovic for retiring there before :anonymous

Aww, come on, man, I try to contribute to the thread when I can. I love tennis and my dad had me in urban league all throughout my childhood. Just wanted to keep me busy when out of school, but the tennis season was WAY too small and hockey and soccer were very much important to me as well. I don't get a lot televised where I am but I go crazy for the live WTA events when I can get them.

Any way, Mattek-Sands is a journeywoman for sure, so I don't doubt what you said, but she looked good. Was just throwing that out there. Hope her the best. Either way, right now, at this very instance, her husband is ramming her so hard she will be ready for any serve. ;)

I'm thinking Wozzie will make a run and when I see the rest of the field I will make a more educated prediction. I think it is Venus (or was it Serenna?) that is in it, and that for me would be a pick. Again, hoprefully I can examine the brackets more further.

She is 58 at the moment, so she is no pushover. She will probably run into a top seed early on though, so it can be a hard road around that ranking.
She will probably do better in doubles (she was 12th last year). That doesnt get much attention although going by crowd 'oohs' its pretty good maybe thanks to the quick reflex volley battles.

The tournament starts next week. Comes up quick, doesnt it?

Round 2 Heineken Open
It was hawwt, at least 2 people fainted(maybe they were kids though). The pros must have amazing fitness to maintain their playing level like they do.

First match was Almagro/Hanescu. I thought Almagro was taller, maybe Hanescu being 6'6" threw off the perspective too.
Nicolas has been accused of not caring/tanking in the past, but he was fired up today with a 6-4 7-6 win.
http://www.imagebam.com/image/e329fb114832935

Then top seed David Ferrer took on Tobias Kamke. Kamke was looking good hitting quite a few rocket speed shots and overpowered David to take the first set. Ferrer turned on best class mode though and fought back to win. His consistency must have helped since he was being outhit most of the time(or maybe its was Ferrers shirt blinding him:tongue:). 3-6 7-6 6-4
Watch out for Kamke later this year
http://www.imagebam.com/image/ec3390114832944

Next up was the turn of the other David (Nalbandian). He was looking good taking out Philipp Petzschner 6-3 6-2. Might be a contender for the title.
Petzschner didnt play his best, but Nalby didnt give him any chance to get into the match anyway.
http://www.imagebam.com/image/7557c2114832960

The last match I saw was defending champ John Isner against Robin Haase.
Robin is really quite good so it was a tough matchup for John after his bye.
Isner played terrible :)pukey:) in the first set and he got broken twice. Looked like a #3000 ranked player or something (except for his serve of course). Fortunately for him to gained more consistency in the second, but still couldnt break Haase either so it went to a tie-break which Isner won.
It was similar in the third set until 6-5 Isner when he finally broke Haase after he made some mistakes (it was his first break point of the match too )
Isners serve is definitely scary  Haase was taken the second serve around head height, and that is after stepping inside the baseline and being 6'3" himself. Probably about 80-90% of his returns could be called 'weak', so when combined with all the aces its easy to see why he wins 90% of his service games. 3-6 7-6 7-5.
http://www.imagebam.com/image/884616114832953

Todays best matches are probably Ferrer/Kohlschreiber and Isner/Nalbandian.

^ and he did 6-4 7-6 :hatsoff:
The commentators said that Isner looked to have an injured right arm, but since one of them was Andrew Saville I'd rather wait for an official source for confirmation.
Predicting a Nalbandian/Ferrer final.

Predicting a Nalbandian/Ferrer final.

Nalbandian-Giraldo for me

Ferrer has struggling the entire tournament, and Giraldo (the "Davydenko-clone") is inspired like never before (in fact, i think it's his first ever ATP semifinal)

Money flows in for Roger Federer

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/money-flows-in-for-roger-federer/story-e6freyar-1225987338337

recognised by punters as the Swiss Bank for his efforts in recent Australian Opens, is once again favourite for the grand slam event

go Roger!!!! (i hope he avoid Murray in QF)

ESPN AO picks
http://espn.go.com/sports/tennis/picks

Seems strange that Djokovic has as many votes as Federer to win. Murray snubbed again.
Clijsters is pretty much a lock according to them.
Not much confidence in Berdych or Venus.
Thought Soderling might show up in the sleepers, maybe he is too high ranked.
Henin is the favourite sleeper even though she reached the final last year.
----------
Nalbandian looks a bit sunburnt.

Die For Me
I think maybe it could be the Rafa Slam like Serena has the Serena Slam, its not quite the same as winning them all in one season.
If he does win though, then he has a great chance to win 5 in a row (hasnt been done before iirc) and a 'not bad' chance to win 6 consectutive at Wimbledon. Dont want to get too far ahead though, Roger looks to be in potential GS winning form at the moment.

The draw is in the process of being announced I think, since the wiki page is incomplete.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Australian_Open_–_Men's_Singles

Nadal looks to have Youhzny/Ferrer in his QF and Murray in his SF.
Djokovic might get Karlovic in his second round which might be a little dangerous but he should get through.
Nalbandian gets Hewitt first round.

In the womens, Wozniacki drew Cibulkova in the first round :uohs: She will probably win this time around though.

Mistake: Woz has Dulko first round, Cibulkova third round.
The wiki draw is complete now and is relatively easy to read.

Clijsters has Safina first round which is interesting but Kim should win.
Venus/Sharapova in the 4th round if they get that far.
Henin/Kuznetsova in the 3rd round.

Kohlschreiber has it tough with Kamke then probably Berdych. Wanted to see him do well :(
Tipsarevic might upset Verdasco 2nd round if I had to pick one.
Mardy Fish didnt get the easiest draw with Hanescu/Robredo/Querrey/Federer in his first four matches.
Del Potro has Baghdatis/Melzer/Murray for his 2nd/3rd/4th round so he probably wont go too far in his comeback slam.

The draw is out!

Projected QFs:
Nadal - Ferrer
Soderling - Murray
Berdych - Djokovic
Roddick - Federer

BUT, beware with:
Nadal - Isner in 4th round (if John serves good, he has a good chance)
Nalbandian - Ferrer in 3rd round
Gulbis - Soderling in 4th round
Davydenko - Berdych in 4th round
Djokovic - Karlovic in 2nd round (OUCH!)
Djokovic - Troicki in 3rd round
Roddick - Wawrinka in 4th round
Federer - Fish/Querrey in 4h round

My predictions:

Nadal - Nalbandian
Soderling - Murray
Davydenko - Djokovic
Wawrinka - Federer

and THEN, Rafa-Robin and Kolya-Roger, and THEN, Robin-Roger!

can't wait for it to start!

Not sure about Gublis/Soderling 4th round since: Gulbis' 3rd round opponent is Tsonga + the last time he got past the second round of a slam was FO 08.
I know he has all this potential and can upset a top 10 on occasion but his record has shown that he just doesnt win a whole lot - Career record 91-87 as of this post (he is playing a match right now, smashed his racket after getting broken).
Or maybe this is the year he finally gets it together consistently. At least his higher ranking has given him some easier earlier matches.

Ferrer won the ATP 250 of Auckland

It's his 10th career title, 2nd in the last 2 months. Not bad for the spaniard.
For Nalbandian, it was his first final in 5 months, and played pretty bad. Way too many mistakes, specially on backhand.

Now Ferrer goes with high hopes for Oz, and they probably face each other again in 3th round. The one who wins there, will likely face Youzhny/Llodra, so, they have a good opportunity to reach the QF, where probably Rafa will wait. And that will be it, for either of both.

However, a major QF is not bad at all...

Lungzyn

Die For Me
Back from the final, Ferrer too good and steady as always.
Nalbandian seemed to give up after getting broken, or just forgot how to play. Not like Gulbis' 3 point second set yesterday, but still disappointing.
The doubles was more competitive, Robredo and Granollers won 6-4 7-6

Hewitt is winning his match against Monfils at the moment, so Nalbandian must play better than today next week :hammer:
I will guess that Troicki wins in Sydney against Simon.
