I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think Boise St has the academics to get into the Pac-10. I think Colorado/Utah or BYU/Utah would be a better fit. Although, doesn't BYU refuse to play on Sundays???

Utah and BYU would be the perfect fit. Great all around programs, and keeps with the Pac10 having 2 rivals in each region.

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
All kidding aside, I personally would have no issue with Texas going into the Big 10 but I just don't see it happening unless some regional rivalry issues can be overcome. First, no way is Texas giving up the OU game or the Texas A & M game every year. If these suddenly became annual non-conference games, that might really be a tough one to take due to the quality (well, A & M used to be at least) of the competition (as you know, the Longhorns would much rather play a cupcake non-conference schedule). Also, there are mini-rivalries with other regional schools like Texas Tech and Oklahoma State that have lots of alumni in Texas. I just can't see Minnesota and Northwestern coming into Austin and creating the same type of buzz.

Still, if the money aspect is rich enough....it could happen. One way would be to bring in both Texas and Texas A & M. Now, the A & M game is a conference game and the following that these 2 programs have would deliver huge TV market revenues from Houston and Dallas to the Big 10. Personally, I'd love to see a resumption of the Texas-Ohio State matchups that took place a couple of years ago. That had the potential to develop into a huge rivalry!

If jumbling up the conferences will in any way help to pave the way for a playoff system of some sort, I'd be all for it.

I would think Nebraska's rivalry with OU, Mizzou and CU is pretty damn lucrative seeing as how old it is. and the historical nature of the OU rivalry would certainly need to be kept in tact if they moved into another conference. it just wouldnt be a college season without an OU Nebraska game.

You make a lot of good points about rivalries but, actually, OU does not schedule Nebraska every year like they used to. Ever since the conference split into North and South, there are years when the OU-Nebraska tilt doesn't make the rotation (2007 for instance). Since Missouri and Colorado are in the same division as Nebraska, the Huskers do play them every year.

Tell the SEC to schedule Boise than.

I heard something mentioned on the radio last week, but I have been unable to find it. They claimed that Ohio State had the largest home and away attendance for games last year.

It does make sense though. The Buckeyes had 8 games at home with attendance at 105,000; they played at Penn St’s Beaver Stadium (110,000), Michigan’s Big House (108,000), the Rose Bowl (110,000), Cleveland Stadium (75,000), Purdue (63,000) and Indiana (52,000).

Anyone else hear that story?

Nope, but it makes sense.

If the Pac10 wanted to expand---they will go after Colorado who would certainly leave the Big12 and Air Force, I suspect.

Boise does have similar academic issues as Fresno State which is why Fresno will never get invited to the Pac. It's not that Boise and Fresno are always on academic probation, it's just that academically they offer nothing to the Pac10. They are merely finishing schools for high school grads. Neither university has a distinctive academic program. Wazzu and Oregon St and Arizona State really aren't top tier academic schools either but they offer more academically than mere finishing school status. You have to be able to offer PhDs and to do that, a university needs to have funding and resources.

I think we're missing the boat about conference realignment. It makes sense for the Big10 to grab Notre Dame (someday) and Texas for ratings expansion. It makes less sense for the Big 10 to grab West Virginia or Rutgers. Pitt or Cincy would be superior athletic programs across the board. But, the point is that Big10 expansion can make sense to that conference.

Does it really make sense for the Pac10? The Pac10 has so much space to consider and not many schools. What about Hawaii? Who wouldn't want Hawaii in their conference--for traveling alumni? SDSU is a shit school athletically but San Diego is a Texas-sized tv market. BYU and CSU and Utah are all decent schools but none of them scream ~excitement~ Would anyone in the Pac10 really get geeked up if BYU showed up on the schedule? Boise State is intriguing opponent in football but it's a stretch to elevate most of their other teams into bigtime status. Tennis and Women's soccer are there but the basketball teams are crap.

For the Pac10...maybe it makes more sense to combine the Pac10, the MWC and the WAC into a SUPER REGIONAL CONFERENCE....:dunno: That's really the only way it can compete with the Big10 if the Big10 secures ND or Texas...

Jim Deleny (Big 10 Commish) is under the mistaken impression that Rutgers brings the New York City media market. Problem is that nobody in NYC gives a shit about college football, so cable channels in NYC will not be willing to fork over lots of cash to pick up the Big 10 Network.

...

TR I think you have been putting too much emphasis on Academics........ I mean last time I checked, Washington St is in the Pac 10!

in the article, dodd says that sickle cell trait has been the number one killer of ncaa athletes the last ten years. i was unaware of that. what do you guys think about mandatory testing?

also the story mentions another tradgedy at that school, chucky mullins, and that is a very sad story. any o you guys remember that? i think i was only 6 when it happened.

and there's always the Hank Gathers tradgedy.

i just can't get over the irony of being a gifted athlete, getting to do something you love or dream about and then it kills you. i'm sure that happens in other professions or careers but it just strikes me as really sad.

anyway thats your feel good story for monday, i guess, sorry to be such a downer but i just came across that article this morning.

Lane Kiffin says in interview he would have won the SEC if he'd have stayed with the Vols... Sorry USC fans, you've got a first class idiot for a coach now.

Kiffin is like school in the summertime

Damn fool :1orglaugh

I thought he was an idiot when he was the OC  My only hope is he doesn't ruin the program by the time he heads back to the NFL (in 2 years).

If the NCAA actually does put USC on suspension that might hasten Lamey's departure

BUT, USC would then run the risk of pulling a Nebraska and falling way off the landscape due to coaching misfires...

I really am not cutting Kiffin and the Gang any slack next year. 10 wins or get the fuck out.:wave2:

I think they will get ten and that is it a 10-2 mark I can see that happening

The owner of Outlook is a friend of mine, so I knew of the interview for a few days. What a strong moral character Tressel shows.

Coachs Tressel talks acceptance with GLBT publication
Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel doesn't grant many exclusive interviews. He isn't the type to constantly seek out video cameras and tape recorders, even in a media environment where the loudest college football coaches (cough, Lane Kiffin, cough) often get the most attention, regardless of their win-loss total.

That's why I was surprised to see the interview Tressel recently gave to Outlook Columbus, which bills itself as "a lifestyle and advocacy publication" that serves Ohio's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community (GLBT). Outlook Columbus's March 2010 issue is entitled "Queers & Sports," and features interviews with both Tressel and Ohio State athletics director Gene Smith, among others.

Here's the issue: Tressel's interview can be found on Page 32, while Smith's appears on Page 22.

According to OutSports.com, a national publication that serves the gay sports community, Tressel is believed to be the first major FBS head coach to conduct an exclusive interview with a GLBT publication about gay issues. Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh spoke to the gay-activist organization GLAAD in December after being accused of yelling an anti-gay slur during a game.

Among the questions Tressel addresses in the Outlook Columbus interview: If an Ohio State football player came out as gay, what advice would Tressel provide and would the team, fans and university be supportive?

“We strive to teach and model appreciation for everyone. One, we are a family. If you haven’t learned from your family at home that people have differences and those strengthen the whole, then you are hopefully going to learn it as part of the Ohio State football family.

"Two, every part of our team is important and every role has value -- no job is too small and no person is irrelevant -- that’s a great lesson that transcends into society. When I think of the diversity we’ve had on our team the past few years, it goes way beyond just a racial, sexual or ethnic mix. We've had players who had different religions, players who came from different economic backgrounds, players who are parents, who are spouses, who are caring for ailing parents, who are wheelchair bound, who are battling cancer, and on and on. Whatever a young man feels called to express, I hope we will help him do it in a supportive environment. Everybody is important, and maturity is learning to find and appreciate those differences in others."

Tressel also addressed why so few gay college athletes declare their sexual orientation openly.

"What we have, quite often, with our athletes, and with a number of young people in any sport, is that from the time they were 6 or 7 years old, their identity has been through sports. You’re the tallest, you’re the fastest, you’re the best player. All their feedback has come in terms of their role as a player, and they are often hesitant to go beyond that narrow role. ... The greatest achievement we can have as coaches is that a young man leaves us with a concept of who he is, what he wants from life, and what he can share with others -- someone who is 'comfortable in his own skin,' and that identity can go in a number of directions."

Michael Daniels, the co-owner and co-publisher of Outlook Columbus, conducted the interview with Tressel through e-mail while the coach was recruiting. Outlook Columbus has a strong relationship with Ohio State and its GLBT alumni group, Scarlet and Gay, and it recently had Smith speak at a networking function.

As part of the sports issue, Daniels reached out to several figures in the Columbus sports community and was put in touch with Tressel through Smith's office.

"I'm really proud of him of being the first Division I coach to do a one-on-one with the gay press and actually address those questions without really flinching too much," Daniels told me. "People look at him and they say, 'He is a little buttoned-up.' If you read his book, 'The Winners Manual,' he's obviously a very spiritual man. People think he's somewhat conservative. But I think that him doing this interview and the answers to these questions showed how much of a class act the guy really is."

Kudos to Tressel for doing this and addressing a subject that is still very taboo in college football. Most fans want their coaches to focus strictly on X's and O's, but Tressel's influence in Ohio stretches far beyond the gridiron. His voice matters, and his message of acceptance comes through here.
