2008 March Madness Thread

If all 4 number 1 seeds make it to the final four, I will be truly shocked.
Frankly, Me too... I try and factor in the usual shocks and awes, the yearly 5-12, 6-11, 7-10, and 8-9 upsets, and this year it seemed tougher to figure out who was going to do that AND win the following game. The closest I see a team being "Cinderella" is Drake and Butler...

I think My best year was when UNLV won the championship, beating Duke handily in 1990; I hit on close to 80% of the games, including the championship game (it helped that I picked Loyola Marymount to go far despite the tragic loss of Hank Gathers).

My Final Four:
West Regional: UCLA Bruins
South Regional: Memphis Tigers
East Regional: North Carolina Tarheels
Midwest Regional: Kansas Jayhawks
(All top seeds make it thru...I never had that happen before...)

West Regional Shocks:
I see Drake going up against UCLA, but all other top seeds win in the opening round.
South Regional Shocks:
St. Mary's over Miami, Florida in the 1st round
East Regional Shocks:
George Mason and Butler win their 1st round games, and I see Butler making it to a game against Louisville, in a 3-7 match-up.
Midwest Regional Shocks:
I see is Clemson making it to the semi-finals.

I see UCLA taking out Memphis and NC defeating Kansas, with UCLA winning yet another championship.

I didn't mention the St. Mary's game because it's not going to be much of a shock.;) I just registered on NBCSports and entered the bracket contest. A lot of people are choosing the underdogs in that game, the Davidson game, The St. Joe's game, and the AZ game. GO HERE

I'm doing pretty good after the first day of games...so far. Although my dark horse (and personal fav) USC is currently getting our asses handed to us by KState...

I might be losing one of my Final Four teams unless my Trojans can somehow figure out a way to rebound...

Final Four:

UCLA
Texas
Tarheels
Clemson

Winner: UCLA by 4 points

this might might sound crazy but this is what i got.

unc
kansas
pitt.
xavier

winner: Xavier (barely squeaked by Georgia today)

I'm going to go check my bracket on espn.com, but I'm positive I picked every game correctly except for those frakking trojans. Geez they played poorly tonight. KState just pounded them into submission. The most exciting game of Day 1...obviously Dooky versus Belmont! Daamn Belmont! Why! What happened at the end there?? They almost pulled off the shocker of the millenium....

Tomorrow...well...gotta go Big on Texas and North Carolina..

My FF
USC (Whoops)
Texas
Ucla
North Carolina

OJ Mayo...better think about hanging around campus 1 more year...

same here, i went undefeated today...EXCEPT FOR FREAKING USC LOSING. i was almost gonna pick Kansas state too, cause they looked good early in the season, but i had a feeling OJ Mayo was gonna light it up tonight, so i went 15-1 in the first half of the first round...tomorrow should be interesting, a lot of upsets can happen, today's games were kind of locks in my opinion.

lol at duke and almost blowing it. i have them loosing to W VA anyways next round. my friend has them going the distance.

UCLA, UNC are as near as stone cold locks for the final four as I can remember. UCLA's side of the bracket is weaksauce, UNC doesn't leave North Carolina until the Final Four. A Texas-UCLA re-match in the semis would be pretty tight.

But I think the poster who picked all 4 Number 1s to make it made a pretty good call, because I think this is the 1st time since I can remember that the top 5 teams (UCLA, UNC, KANSAS, TEXAS, MEMPHIS - no disrespect TENNESEE and GEORGETOWN) are head and shoulders above any other team in the nation.

The USC choke/KState hustle upset a lot of brackets. The BYU/TAM game could have gone either way--I just chose the wrong one. Other than those two, I'm intact.

In my bracket I have Kansas, Tennessee, then Memphis, UCLA. with Kansas and Ucla in the final. Ucla to win it all. However my daughter graduated from VaTech so you know how I feel.

According to My Yahoo Fantasy brackets, I'm 13 out of 16. I picked George Mason, USC, and BYU. I would not have minded Belmont dropping Duke, however...lol.

Do any of you not pick all the way through the tournament? I mean, I filled out a bracket that goes all the way to the championship. However, the main bracket my friend and I are doing is a round-by-round bracket. To me, it's a lot more fun. All you do is make your 1st round picks and then after those are over, you repick. The person with the most wins overall wins it.

13-3 after 1st day (missed Marquette, Kansas State, and WVU).

So if anyone is doing it on the round-to-round basis, post your results here.

As good as I was on the first day of the tournament, I crashed and burned HARD on the second day (9 correct out of 16)! Sucks for My bracket but fun to watch.... go underdogs!

Tennessee will play Butler in the second round. I like the Vols, but an upset is possible. Meanwhile, possible upsets in the first round by region:
EAST: George Mason will give ND all they can handle. Don't be shocked...they won their conference tourney after a rough last few games. They played Villanova and K State tough. Sure they've been inconsistent, but they're peaking at the right time. Plus they have Folarin Campbell.
MIDWEST: Davidson is no slouch. Nineteen straight wins and the Southern Conference championship. They played No. 1 seed NC to a 4-point game, and their opponent is coming off a tourney loss. Led by point merchant Stephen Curry and the 3-point shooting of Brendan McKillop, they have very high expectations.
SOUTH: Shouldn't be any real surprises in this region. The Miss St Oregon game is a toss-up, with the Bulldogs holding the Varnado advantage.
WEST: You could see a lot of crazy stuff in this region. West. Kentucky never lost by more than ten all season, and they played Gonzaga to the wire. Matt Maresca is scary accurate. Baylor finished 4th in the Big 12 but, man...can they roll up the points. I'd go with the Hilltoppers in the upset if I could only pick one.

You'd think I'd take my own advice. Both WKU and Davidson now advance to the Sweet Sixteen, thanks to Davidson's dumping of 2 seed Georgetown. Even though I praised these two teams, did I pick them this far? No. Because I'm a dumbass. :(

Even though I praised these two teams

your analysis proved very sound

did I pick them this far? No. Because I'm a dumbass. :(

:1orglaugh

For what it's worth I know that feeling all too well.
I think everyone that gambles on sports does.
Having dumbass moments is inevitable.
The key is limiting them.

Well, I guess no one else is doing this on a round-by-round basis where you "repick" the games as you go rather than filling out the bracket all the way through. Using this version, I went 4-4 on Saturday and 8-0 today (Sunday). I picked Davidson over Gtown...Curry is an amazing player.

-However, I did do the "full bracket"
Using ESPN's scoring system (which is 10 points for a 1st round win, 20 points for the second round game, 40 for the Sweet Sixteen, 60 for final 4, and 80 for the championship teams, and I don't know how much you get for getting the champion right), I'm at 460 points.

Wow! Amazed to see what Davidson did to the Hoyas! And Duke losing....they don't call it March Madness for nothing. Texas against Stanford in next round will be a killer game. Go 'horns!!
