2007 MLB Thread

Payroll is an incredibly stupid debate. If the teams used their draft-picks intelligently and didn't make stupid signings they would have a better chance of winning. Payroll has nothing to do with anything, and you should know this. Our best pitcher in the post-season was Josh Beckett, go ahead and see how much of the payroll he takes up.

The post season is a small sample size of games and not useful for the evaluation of skill level. Clutch hitting or pitching has pretty much been proven not to exist, and if Boston really thought somebody was better they probably would have paid more.

In baseball drafting is 80%+luck. Getting the players to develop after that is about 80% luck, and it will take years to get them there unlike other sports where new players can make an impact immediately.

Of course you would have to assume it's just coincidence, which it isn't, that over time the teams with the bigger payrolls tend to do better than the teams with the smaller ones. Payroll isn't everything by any means, but there is no way anybody can seriously say it has nothing to do with winning. It has a lot to do with winning. Assuming their of equal skill a front office with a huge payroll has an definite advantage over another front office with a smaller one.

Plus a large payroll gives you a huge advantage that most people don't think about. It lets you make mistake after mistake without having to pay for it in the long run as much. The Yankees or Red Sox could make a huge signing, have the person turn into a flop, and shed his contract without it devastating the club. A smaller payroll team that does that will be significantly affected for years and years.

Well, in case you didn't hear, the D-Backs gave up most of their farm system to get Dan Haren. I guess they're confident that their young team can get to the world series right away. Shame they traded away their closer, a move I find baffling.

And I almost cried when I heard :weeping:

He was one of the guys I saw a bright future for, and I'm very sad to see him leave Oakland. And this probably means Blanton will be gone in the near future, another favorite of mine.

It's sad to see them go, I just have to keep my faith that Billy Beane improved our team for the future.

Beane might be one of the best ever, and with the possible exception of the New England Patriots, they might be the best run sports team of the last 10 years, but as far as pitchers go I wonder if even his staff can keep coming up with person after person that performs well and cheap in the beginning. They have brought in enough good ones over the year that it can't be all luck, but still I don't know if Oakland will be able to do it forever.

Yeah, shayd, it looks like the A's are still shooting for the future rather than the here and now. If I recall correctly though, they got something insane like 5 of the Dbacks top 10 prospects. I think it should work out in the long run. Like alot of teams, the A's have trouble keeping their young talent when it comes time to re-sign them for big bucks. With their payroll theyre going to just have to succeed (if they do at all) with a surprising young team, much like the Dbacks last year. Hopefully these prospects they dealt for can be part of that.

It must be coming down to the wire for Jim Rice then. I think Andre Dawson has at least a few more years.

I believe Jim Rice got as close as he ever has. Something like 80% of what he needed. Personally, I'm with C_A on Dawson. I've never seen a player play through more pain than him, if that's worth anything. Those war-torn knees....

I'm guessing Dawson would have made it by now (deservedly) if not for the roid freaks making his accomplishments look less Hall of Famish by comparison

I don't think Shawon Dunston is gonna make it. Sorry Cub fans. ;)

Don't forget about Ron Santo. If it weren’t for Ryne Sandberg being elected the Cubs would be the most screwed over team when it came to Hall of Fame snubbing.

Now that honor has probably been taken over by Detroit.
