A white police officer in North Charleston, South Carolina, has been charged with ****** over the fatal shooting on Saturday of a 50-year-old black man, Walter Scott, marking a remarkably swift move for justice in a fatal police incident.

North Charleston police chief Eddie Driggers said officer Michael Slager, 33, had been arrested and charged with ******.

Footage of the shooting, which occurred around 9.30am after Scott was pulled over for a traffic *********, reportedly shows Slager firing eight times at Scott, who is running away.

Local newspaper the Post and Courier published a still from video which appears to show Scott fleeing as Slager points a *** at his back.

Slager had initially released a statement through his lawyer arguing he had “followed all the proper procedures and policies of the North Charleston police department”.

But at a press conference on Tuesday, North Charleston mayor Keith Summey told reporters that Slager had made a “bad decision”.

“When you’re wrong, you’re wrong,” Summey said as quoted by the Post and Courier. “When you make a bad decision, don’t care if you’re behind the shield or a citizen on the street, you have to live with that decision.”

Amid questions about the circumstances of Justus Howell's death, authorities announced late Monday that Howell had reportedly stolen a handgun shortly before he was fatally shot in the back by a police officer about 2 p.m. Saturday.

But Howell's ****** members and local civil rights advocates have said they still have questions, including whether Howell, 17, was armed at the time he was shot.

Authorities said the claim that Howell had just stolen a *** came from an 18-year-old Lindenhurst man, who they said was pulled over later Saturday and was found with a handgun magazine in his car.

After he was detained, the man, Tramond Peet, told police that he had arranged to meet Howell earlier that day in Zion to sell him a handgun, officials said.

Police said Peet told them Howell attempted to take the weapon without paying for it and the two struggled over the ***, which at one point discharged. When police arrived, Howell ran off with the *** and police followed, authorities said.

Michael Dizzonne said his wife, Phyllis, sat up in bed when she heard two gunshots Saturday. She told him after the incident that she looked out the window and saw a person across the street fall down, he said. She said she didn't see the wounded person carrying a weapon, her husband said, though he noted that she was also unable to tell his skin color or approximate age.

Peet was charged with a weapons ********* and remained in the Lake County Jail on Tuesday.

There is. It's just that the media and yourself do not pay attention to it. As far as **** crimes being only for blacks, there is a trial in N.C. where the defendants are trying to get the **** crime part removed and the victims were not black. The case were the Australian man was shot in Florida, I myself said that the **** crime should have been applied. The prosecutor did not have the intestinal fortitude to at least try to charge him with it. When it was mentioned in the media none of the talking heads were against it from what I remember.

I'm sure it happens many times over, regardless of race. Problem is, it's the racial angle that makes it newsworthy for some reason....probably because we have a lot of racial issues yet to overcome in the USA.
