An Etiquette Question... #2

You're in line at the coffee shop, planning to pick up your favorite caffeinated beverage. There's a couple of guys ahead of you who make a blatantly racist comment and laugh about it. They aren't too subtle about it, and you easily overhear. Glancing around you see that the person directly behind you in line is a young woman of the race about which they made the remark, and she has obviously heard, and taken offense to, the remark as well. How do you react?

Do you call the guys out on their behavior? Do you keep quiet in hopes of not making waves? Do you go get the manager to see if he'll eject the guys from the store? Do you try to console the young woman? Do you take a dump in your pants and throw your own ***** at the racists because nothing says "I disapprove of your comment" like a face full of trouser fudge?

What do you do? What do you do...?

I'd make a simple comment to the guys so they heard, and the woman behind us heard as well. Something along the lines of, "You know, most people don't find racism funny." And leave it at that. If they challenged me, got in my face, or whatever, I'm merely say they said one thing, I responded. If they were hoping to have a private conversation, they should have kept the volume down.

If I were you, I'd probably stay quiet, too. I am, however, quite a bit taller and broader than you, and present a slightly more intimidating presence. It makes a difference.

Oh I don't think they'd try to physically harm me. I just don't like confrontation, **** getting into arguments, and there's no doubt that guys like that wouldn't take it seriously, would make another sarcastic comment about it, and I'd end up feeling like crap.
Every time I've spoken up about something, the other person either gets really defensive and the whole thing escalates into this big thing, or they don't take it seriously and it pisses me off even more. I pretty much always lose.

I quickly finished what I was doing, turned around and said "Excuse me, I find what you're saying absolutely disgusting, and if you kept your voice down I wouldn't have to hear it." "Hey man, why don't you go over somewhere else and mind your own fucking business?"

I stood for a moment, me being shorter than this guy but still as broad as he is, just staring at him incredulously before shaking my head and going to another part of the gym. Needless to say I told the manager about this, but being that the gym is horribly run, he still works there and still continues to run his mouth.

I can venture to guess that it means that it's discharging something besides the usual lubrication when a woman gets aroused, and maybe even at inappropriate times.

The guy's a raging douche, and makes a habit of talking to every hot woman in the gym, checking himself out in the mirror, and singing/talking at the top of his voice so you can hear him even on the other side of the gym.

In most situations people won't default to ******** unless there's something more going on. Like if your response to them is overly aggressive, or if they're ***** and have had their inhibitions lowered. This seems to be doubly true when the potential target is a woman. Consider for a moment the amount of times you've seen people make a scene in public, and now consider the percent where it actually descended into ********. Probably a pretty small percentage of those events turned physical, no?

I think society has us better trained than we may often believe ourselves to be.

I find the idea of a Harley Spencer who's not more than capable in an argument to be a little dumbfounding. You're very good with nonverbal confrontation, even if you don't particularly enjoy it. (Honestly, it can be fun to just watch you go sometimes )

Well even if they're prissy, they've got some real mouths on them.

A while ago, I was coming back home from dinner and witnessed a black couple arguing on the street. The woman yelled a bunch of obscenities, threw a shopping bag on the ground at his feet and yelled, "YOU carry the damn bag!", stormed away, and he was left there with the saddest look on his face. Poor guy.
