Worst (WTF were they thinking) Monents, Events and Bad Ideas in Comic Book History

Re: Worst (WTF were they thinking) Monents, Events and Bad Ideas in Comic Book Histor

Do you know what I think the worst part of Liefeld's art is besides the fact he just sucks? It's that in two freaking decades he hasn't improved at all or learned anything. That's rare for any serious artist in any profession. It goes to show he just doesn't give a crap.

Here's something to add to the list...the multi-comic title crossover. There was one point where you couldn't read a complete story without having to buy 4 or 5 different comic titles. There was an entire 3 year period where you couldn't read Amazing Spider-Man without having to read Spectacular Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man and the Sensational Spider-Man. You couldn't read Batman without also reading Detective Comics, Shadow of the Bat, legend of the Bat and Gotham Knights. It was an industry wide scam to get you to either buy titles which you were not currently buying and/or Trade Paperbacks and Hard Covers which were released a few months later. It's a practice which still exists, but not to the extent it did in the 90's.

I loathed the multi-comic crossovers back when I was still buying them. They weren't fooling anybody with the scam like nature even if there were people who still bought them.

I would even go further though and say there should never be more than one ongoing title for any superhero ever with maybe the exceptions of Spider-man, Superman, and Batman, and that's only because of who they are and also because of tradition with Action and Detective Comics having been around forever. Even then I would limit them two two at the very most. There was a point where the number of Batman comics coming out at one time was well beyond ridiculous and it would turn me off to buying any of them in the first place.

and again, the 19 different incentive covers they had for each one. if you go into any comic store, and look through the longboxes, theyll be completely full of issues from the years 93-98. itwas literally the great depression of comics. the companies basically drowned themselves in unsold issues.

I'll admit I got caught up in the hype when I was younger. I'd walk into a comic shop and see all those beautiful foil and hologram covers and I'd buy every one. I would then put them in mylar plastic bags with the acid proof cardboard backs and pray that they would be worth $1000.00 each in 5 years. Then I had to buy the same issue with a regular cover so I could read it, and I usually wound up severely disappointed. 20 years later those same books aren't worth much more than what I originally paid for them and are taking up waaay too much space.

p.s. - I also bought 5, yes I said 5, copies of the wedding issue of Peter Parker and Mary Jane. Man, the money I could have saved.

i know... i see guys trying to dump them off at my local shop constantly expecting to get big money. usually, they never even entertain them with an offer.

and another fail for comics is the old send aways for crazy stuff like xray glasses, steroids... and PET MONKEYS?!?! :wtf:

Comics are thought the same decades ago. Working with elderly people as I do many of them tend to say the same thing. Who knew that ten cent comic would be worth thousands after all these years. Thing is nowadays you just have to be selective and know. Also long-term investor if you are going to try and flip a comic for profit. I remember seeing 30 Days of Night in Wizard in the Indie Section. I knew right off the bat it would be golden just looking at the cover. I have a talent for spotting comics that are worth something. I bought three copies when they freshly delivered. I **** that Wizard went out. I really don't know where else to get comic book prices. I'm sure now one of you will show me a link.

Then again not like Wizard was really pricing comic books in the last three years of their existence to begin with.

Thank you, kindly. It will go well for my Chaos Comics, Indies, and generally obscure **** I like to pick up because I try different comics as well as my likes. Too bad my old comic shop went out years ago. Those were the realest, down to earth comic dealers I ever came across. The only other one I know of is ran by honestly stereotypical geeks who will watch you like a hawk and act as if it is sacrilege if you exert any independence over how you handle a comic. Fuck you! I know how to handle a goddamn comic book. Asshat.

Ah well, that's my comic book WTF are you thinking shop thought. I **** when the employees act like you are desecrating a comic because it isn't how they would look at it. I'm not bending pages, breaking spines, or smudging ****. Just let me flip through and make sure it is intact and good to go. I don't give a **** because it is sitting on the rack without a bag and it is new. Don't make me roll it up and shove it where the comic sun don't shine.

Fun. One day I will tally up total value of my quaint collection.

That's good. I probably have a nice thousand or two. Maybe. I won't count my chickens until they hatch though.

Re: Worst (WTF were they thinking) Monents, Events and Bad Ideas in Comic Book Histor

Oh!

WTF is up with comic prices? Too damn expensive for my tastes. I'm not paying 3-4 dollars for one comic! Crazy.

Re: Worst (WTF were they thinking) Monents, Events and Bad Ideas in Comic Book Histor

I think the moral of the story with anything people collect is to collect them because you like them and not as an investment. All those old comics people bought because they thought they were awesome back then are just as good to go through and read for the enjoyment of it than any time before. They might even be better considering some of them are from a time before the comic industry got stupid. There is some comics I wouldn't want to get rid of even if they were only worth ten cents just because I like them. I was always irritated with people that bought some comics back in the day just because they thought they would turn a profit. In some ways I feel they got what they deserved. Of course it helping the industry going to hell was a bad side effect of it.

I was also a person that bought the backing and bags for comics back when I collected them, but I did that to every comic I got irrespective of what I perceived it's future worth to be, and I'm the kind of person that takes pride in maintaining the good condition of a lot of what I own. I wanted them to last a long time for myself, and not so I could sell them in 20 years.

Comic books do not make a good retirement plan.

The Spawn/Batman team-up was a "What the F--? were they thinking" moment in comic book history.

They were both awful but my pick is the DC Comics version of the Batman/Spawn team. "War Devil" was the worse of the two. The Image version stunk but at least the artwork was nice to look at.

The death of Jean Grey has been done so many times I **** the fact that she keeps dying and coming back. I'm waiting for her return in the X books and still will not read them.

Hope will be the new Phoenix, which is the catalyst for the Avengers vs. X-Men upcoming crossover event.
