Your job?

I own & run a Paint & Auto Body shop, I love my job, make good money, make my own hours, I can take what ever days off I want, one of the perks of the job is when gorgeous women come to my shop for estimate's or collision repair :yesyes: Its a tough job because I'm a perfectionist and have an eye for detail but what makes it fun is the different vehicles and to take a pile of junk and turn it into a work of art. There's alot of sanding, body work, heavy lifting and working with hazardous materials but overall I enjoy my job and only see things getting better. Before that I used to be a Landcsaper & Wild land Fire Fighter oh and on spare time I like gardening and livestock, its pretty much my other job :D

I live in America. Pennsylvania.

Do you live in Pennsylvania proper, or are you in Pennsyltucky? Because I think that's a third-world country. At least that's what I've been told by people from Pittsburgh and Philly. ;)

Waiters get paid between $2 and $4 per hour. The $4 is more for the more private, less popular restaurants. $2/odd-cents is the more generic, common hourly wage. It's because the tips are supposed to make up for the rest, equaling out to either minimum wage or more, but it isn't always the case. The servers don't always make the money in tips and they suffer from it. They really do. That's part of the reason why there is such a high turnover for waiter(ess) positions- the money does not make up for the bullshit they deal with.

I take it Pennsylvania doesn't follow federal minimum wage laws? What a load of horseshit. Do they really expect people to make a living with $16 bucks a day? Hell, in SF $16 bucks isn't even 2 hours' pay for someone making minimum wage.

Actually, most of the states have a exception for wait staff in the books when it comes to minimum wage. It's kind of like the loophole (both in FL and PA) about not having to give 'essential staff' time off. When I was up in PA I got stuck on night watch. Want to talk about a fucking sucky job, that was it. I got sick as hell from it but couldn't call in sick or take time off because they didn't have enough staff to maintain the required staff coverage.

Basically what it comes down to is, I sell beer and smokes to retards. I love my job. Sometimes I wonder how I'm not in prison by the time I go home. Take the dumbest of the dumb and add alcohol and weed. Not a pretty picture, and that's some of the better customers.

Yep, that's what servers make here too. It's lame. Unless you work at some 5 star restaurant you're not going to make any money.

you can't be sure of that if you don't tell us ;)

where and what did you fish for?

a few things, depending on the season, and the fishing restrictions.

mainy rockfish, halibut, and my favourite: tuna. mostly albacore, a few bluefins if we were really lucky.

i also worked with some shrimpers and did some swordfish. was gonna do the crab thing with a cap'n i worked with who came down for the season. almost went, but landed another gig before leaving to alaska.

this was all off california.

I do sometimes wonder how some of the people I deal with actually manage to run a successful business.

do you keep all your tips or do you have to split them? up here wait-staff gets paid minimum wage ($7.75) but they usually have to give some percent to the bussers, kitchen, etc...i'm not sure if it's state law that they have to receive minimum wage or not but every restaurant i've known people to work at got at least that :dunno:

anyway, i almost always tip very well...it has to be blatantly shitty service for me to tip below 20%, i figure if i'm too broke to afford a tip then i have no business eating out

It depends where you're working. Some places make you split your tips with the bartenders, and if there are bus boys, with them as well. I used to work at a bar/restaurant where I had to do that. At the current place I work with, no, the servers don't split their tips with anyone.

I wish more of the general population was like you! That's what I've always said, if I can't afford a tip, then I'm not going to go out to eat unless it's a fast food place that doesn't do tips.

That's the thing, the tips are supposed to equal out to minimum wage. The $2/hr is what the company pays, then the tips from the customers should even out to minimum wage. Most nights the servers will make more than minimum wage after the tips, but sometimes they don't.

I live in central PA.

My girlfriend waited tables while earning her masters degree. I got to hear every night about how rude and cheap people are. We always tip well. I don't understand why restaurants are exempt from minimum wage laws.

It's because of the whole tipping matter. The servers are required to report their tips at the end of the day. If the tips don't equal out to minimum wage, then the company pays out the rest in the check (meaning, more than $2/hr). If they make enough to meet minimum wage, which they usually do, then they're good to go. However, the first job I ever had was a waitress at a very un-wellknown restaurant, they paid me $4/hr and didn't let me claim tips at the end of the day. I usually came out of there with anywhere between $1 and $12. So I was making way less than minimum wage. That restaurant is an asshole. It's family owned and they don't have much business, and not letting their wait staff claim their tips at the end of the day makes it so that they can stay in business. They'd go bankrupt if they let their servers do that because they wouldn't make enough profit. I should've reported them to the government and they wouldn't have a restaurant anymore. Assholes.

Yeah, she showed me her paystubs and there was more creative math on her paychecks than in my calculus classes. She usually brought home $70-$100/night. Something didn't add up, but hey, no one ever got in trouble.

It was a busy truck stop with lots of regulars. I loved their rueben. It was one of the last places in town you could still smoke. That was a big plus for her, not so much for me. I love her even though she smokes. lol
